About Use of ATM links and LAN connections in RNC450

1 About Use of ATM links and LAN connec-tions in RNC450Use of ATM links and LAN connections in RNC450 provides lists of the ATM links provided by the ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU) and the ATM links distributed via Mul-tiplexer Units (MXU) in the RNC.

For more information on the configurations and equipment of the RNC, see Equipment Lists for RNC, Cable Lists for RNC, and Engineering for Radio Network Controller (RNC) delivered in the Site Documents binder.

1.1 Introduction to ATM linksThe ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU) provides a part of the ATM cell switching function. It provides 2N redundancy and full accessibility. It is also non-blocking at ATM connec-tion level (that is, if input and output capacities are available, the connection can be established). The ATM Switching Fabric supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connection topologies, as well as differentiated handling of various ATM service catego-ries. High capacity network interface units and ATM Multiplexer units are connected to the redundant SFU.

The ATM Multiplexer (MXU) multiplexes traffic coming from tributary units towards the switching fabric. This enables the efficient use of switching resources for low bit rate network interface units and computer units with small to moderate bandwidth require-ments. The ATM Multiplexer also includes part of the ATM layer processing functional-ity, such as policing, statistics, OAM, buffer management, and scheduling.

The ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU / SF10) provides 16 pieces of duplicated (622 Mbit/s) asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) ports. And the ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU / SF10E) provides 16 pieces of duplicated (622 Mbit/s) asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) ports and 8 pieces of high speed (2.5 Gbit/s) asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) ports.

The ATM Multiplexer Unit (MXU / MX622-D) provides 19 pieces (0-155 Mbit/s) asyn-chronous transfer mode (ATM) ports.

1.2 Notations used in the lists of ATM links The ATM links are shown in the form of tables, one type for SFU ATM links and another for MXU ATM links.

SFU tableThe table below covers two SFUs, SFU 0 and SFU 1. The table consists of two main columns, SFU 0 (SFU 1) and Functional unit (FU) using the port, as well as a note column. The main columns are divided in subcolumns. Values indicated in the table, such as SW and HW cabling positions, correspond to the SFUs indicated in the main column, thus the value in brackets corresponds to SFU 1 indicated in brackets. The unit using the port, however, can connect via either SFU.

The three subcolumns for SFU:

• Port no. indicates the index number of the high speed port (0-15). • Slot indicates the SFU's equipping place, subrack, and slot. • Cabling position indicates the cabling positions in two ways:

• SW = cable connection coordinate used in hardware configuration management • HW = physical cabling equipping position

The four subcolumns for the Functional unit (FU) using the port are:

• FU indicates the Functional Unit name including index number (for example, OMU 0).

• Plug-in unit indicates the name of the plug-in unit which can be used. • Slot indicates the equipping place number of the plug-in unit. • Cabling position indicates the cabling positions in two ways:

• SW = cable connection coordinate used in hardware configuration management • HW = physical cabling equipping position

MXU tableThe table below covers two MXUs. It consists of two main columns, MXU and Functional unit (FU) using the port, as well as a note column. The main columns are divided in sub-columns. Values indicated in the table, such as SW and HW cabling positions, corre-spond to the MXUs indicated in the main column, thus the value in brackets corresponds to the MXU indicated in brackets. The unit using the port, however, can connect via either MXU.

The three subcolumns for MXU are:

• Port no. indicates the index number of the port (0-18). • Slot indicates the MXU's equipping place, subrack, and slot. • Cabling position indicates the cabling positions in two ways:

• SW = cable connection coordinate used in hardware configuration management • HW = physical cabling equipping position
