ATOMS

Let's look at a lithium atom...

Lithium has an atomic number of 3.This means it has 3 protons and 3 electrons.Protons carry a positive charge while electrons carry a negative charge.What is the overall charge of a lithium atom?

FORMATION OF AN ION

Every atom wants to become stable.An atom is stable if its outermost orbit is full.All atoms will try to give away electrons or gain electrons to try to become stable.

Do you think lithium would give away or take in electrons in order to become stable?

Why?

Any atom that does not have the same number of protons and electrons has an overall charge. These "charged atoms" are called "ions".

IONS

Metals form ions that are positively charged. The ions they form have names identical to the element. For example, magnesium forms magnesium ions.

Nonmetals form ions that are negatively charged. The ions they form have the ending of their name changed to "ide". For example, oxygen atoms form oxide ions while chlorine atoms form chloride ions.

Chemical symbols for ions include the charge.eg. Li+  or  O2
