ATP and ADPHow the cell uses energy

Cells need energy to perform the following functions Make Proteins Perform chemical

reactions Transport chemicals Get chemical energy

(Eat) Grow Move Reproduce

ALL Cells get energy from Cellular respiration All cells either perform

aerobic cellular respiration or anaerobic cellular respiration (Fermentation) to generate ATP.

ALL Cells get energy from breaking down glucose into smaller molecules All cells (whether they

use oxygen or not) use glucose as the reactant for cellular respiration.

All that glucose comes from photosynthesis performed by plants and algae.

Cells generate ATP as the product of cellular respiration. ATP is a nucleic acid

called Adenosine Triphosphate.

ATP is created by using the energy from cellular respiration, and can be used for energy by the cell.

Cells create ATP from a moleculae called ADP ADP is a nucleic acid

called Adenosine Diphosphate.

ADP is a “used up” form of ATP. It requires energy to add a phosphate group to ADP to make it ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).

ADP ATP

ATP is created by adding a phosphate group to ADP. This requires energy.

ATP ADP

ATP is “used up” for energy by the cell and converted back into ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate)
