You may have noticed the Atrium looks a little different than it did a few weeks ago. Construction on Phase 1 of the Atrium Revitalization Project with Phase 2 being completed at a later date. The project has been made possible through funding from SUCCI, Confederation College, and the Alumni department. The space has been updated to better support the needs and wants of our student body and the entire College community. The overall vision for the updated space is to inspire learning, sharing, and educational growth. This vision will be achieved by creating a space that will:
The new look has been inspired by the natural light of the space and the 7 Indigenous Grandfather Teachings on the walls of the second-floor walkway. With the help of the creative team at Open Mind Interiors, it is designed to feel as though you are taking a walk amongst the trees. The carpet follows the waves of the second-floor walkway with colours transitioning to represent a journey from water to the forest floor to trees. Charging stations will be incorporated into the tables for students to use while studying and collaborating with each other at a later date.
The Atrium was officially unveiled with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 27, 2017 with staff and students in attendance. The response to the space has been very positive so far, with students finding their favourite spot to work both independently as well as in groups.

10) AVOID DISTRACTIONS: turn off cell phones, try to limit surfing the internet while you are studying (unless needed for what you are studying) and avoid any other distractions that may shift your focus from what you are studying
11) ONE THING AT A TIME: keep your mind focused on what you are studying in that moment, avoid multi-tasking or studying multiple subjects at the same time
12) CREATE A STUDY PLAN: map out what subject you will study on which day and for how long. Don’t worry if you don’t follow the plan, the plan is created so you can feel in control of your studying
13) STAY POSITIVE: watch inspiring videos, listen to uplifting music, and practice positive affirmations daily
14) LISTEN TO MUSIC: listening to relaxing music (Classical, New Age) while you are studying can help calm your nerves and increase your focus
15) LAUGH & LIGHTEN UP: exams are not life-threatening, yet we treat them like they are. See the lighter side of life, do the best that you can, and remember to LAUGH your way through the whole process! The sillier you get, the less tension you will feel
1) MEDITATE: an important practice to help slow down your mind, and increase mental clarity
2) GET YOUR BODY MOVING: dance, hit the gym, practice yoga, or go for a run. By moving your body, you are increasing blood flow to your brain and melting away stress
3) PRACTICE HEALTHY EATING: avoid foods with large amounts of sugar, eat a breakfast that is high in protein, eat green veggies at lunch and dinner, and drink mint tea throughout the day instead of coffee
4) STAY HYDRATED: avoids drinks with lots of sugar and caffeine and drink lots of water. For increased energy and hydration, try coconut water
5) GO OUTSIDE: spend some time in nature - it’s a simple and effective way of decreasing stress and increasing your focus which whill help you when you return to the books
6) BREAK TIME: take a 10 - 15 min break every 60 mins. The human brain can only take 60 mins straight of studying before it decreased its ability to absorb new information effectively
7) SLEEP: try to get at least 7 - 8 hours each night. Keep your bedroom cool and dark - keep your bedroom for sleeping instead of using it as a study space if possible
8) DON’T CRAM: last minute cram sessions can create a sense of nervousness and panic which leads to more stress and can cause you to forget what you have studied
9) STUDY TO LEARN, NOT FOR HIGH MARKS: avoid focusing on the end result, and what grade you need to get on the exam while studying. Education is about learning; if you focus on the experience of learning, the pressure to achieve a certain result diminishes. As pressure diminishes, productivity increases

TIPS TO MINIMIZE STRESS & MAXIMIZE LEARNING DURING EXAM TIME - PART 2 BY THOMAS MCDONALD
Another academic school year
has come to an end and students
are working hard to finish their
final assignments and study for
exams; a stressful time of the
year for most. SUCCI wanted to
help alleviate some of that stress
by throwing a huge travelling
party that was groovy to say the
least. It was SUCCI’s Swingin’ 60’s
Sendoff, a way for the Student
Union to say thank you to all
the students for coming out and
participating in the various events
that were put on and hosted
throughout the year. Students
were treated to a delicious pizza
lunch provided by Toppers Pizza,
a local pizzaria that was well
received by everyone. There
were plenty of games to play as
well, with ballots awarded for
participating and having fun.
There was plenty of SUCCI Swag
up for grabs and a GRAND PRIZE
of a Fitbit Charge 2 for students
to win. Race Car Rally, Bottle Pop
Stop, and Tumble Towers were
some of the games available
to play at the event. For those
students feeling extra groovy, a
selfie wall was on display with
a host of different props and
hats for students to sport for
some psychedelic pictures. The
Student Union wishes to thank
all the students for coming out
and participating and supporting
all the events throughout the
year - it was all for you. Best of
luck on your final assignments
and exams and we’ll see you
again in September.

various trades continue to make
general progress on construction.
The roof is complete, and some
areas of the building are now
being heated. Dry walling,
electrical, and mechanical work
is well under way. Next month
the gymnasium floor area will be
heated to take the frost out of
the ground, the granular material
re-compacted, and a slab poured.

The contest invited post-secondary

It has been a pleasure to represent the Confederation College
Thunderhawks Athletic Program this year - the amount of skill and
talent that we have on our teams is incredible; maybe they can
teach me a few tricks next season! The Men’s Indoor Soccer Team
made Thunderhawks history by qualifying for the OCAA Provincial
Championships which was exciting news; I wish I was there to cheer
you on but know that I was there in spirit! The Women’s Hockey Team
certainly had a great season, and I was there to see them off on their
trip to Winnipeg for the Lieutenant Governors Hockey Tournament
back in February. I even offered to drive them there myself! It was great
to see so many students interested in playing sports, participating in
Campus Rec events, and becoming a Thunderhawk - well done!
Now that summer has arrived, I have already started to plan
out all the fun activities that I want to do in the coming months.
I was told that there are some really good golf courses around
town so I think I will check those out for sure. Mount McKay has
been calling my name for a while now, so I think a nice hiking
trip is in order too. Afterwards, I will be working alongside my
friend Susan Tucker and help plan another year of fun activities
for Campus Rec and help get the next season of Thunderhawks
Athletics ready to go! Be sure to share your summer photos
with me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
I hope that those students who tried
out for the teams, whether they
made them or not, do the same again
next year. Tell your friends, your
classmates - anyone at the College.
Tell them why you are proud to be a
Thunderhawk and inspire them to do
the same! Go Thunderhawks Go!

STORM-TASTIC FIRST YEAR
SUMMER VACATION
Hey everyone, STORM here! I just wanted to take a moment and
say a few words about the past year as April draws to a close. First
off, thank you so much for the warm welcome I received at the
Orientation BBQ back in September. I got to meet the president of
Confederation College, Jim Madder - what a nice guy! Afterwards, I
thought I would try my wing at Zorb Ball, but unfortunatly I was not
able to fit inside the ball and was only stuck for 20 mins; no biggie!
There were lots of new faces enjoying the day and I’m glad I was
able to be part of the celebration.• rice cakes

• sliced bananas, apples, strawberries
DIRECTIONS
1. Spread peanut butter onto
rice cake; not too much
2. place sliced fruit onto cake

This year saw the continuation of our Healthy Breakfast program
which provides students with healthy and nutritious food that
may not be accessible to them at all times. All academic buildings -
Shuniah, McIntyre, and ACE host the event once a month. Breakfast
is 100% FREE to students and includes fresh fruit, granola bars, juice,
toast, eggs, and cereal. We also launched a new initiative called
“Toonie Tuesday Lunch” which falls on the last Tuesday of each
month in all buildings. For only $2, students can receive a healthy
and nutritious lunch that includes a sandwich, piece of fruit, granola
bar, and juice.
On October 19th, ground was broken on the Aviation Centre
of Excellence (ACE) Flag Pole Project and on October 24th, the
flag was raised. This new area is for staff, students, and the
public to sit and watch the planes lift off during training. Picnic
tables and benches have also been added to the space to help
create a relaxing and welcoming environment for everyone.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the project possible
and I hope that staff and students enjoy the new space.
On Janurary 23rd, the offical name for the new Wellness Centre was unveiled to
the public: The SUCCI Wellness Centre, “Minowaadiziiwin”, which means ‘Lead
a Good Life’ and perfectly reflects the values of the facility with the hope that
students and community members will do just that. The Student Union felt it
was important to support a new Student Wellness Centre to ensure the future
of wellness on campus for all students. We are proud to be a key partner in
this project and honoured to have the Centre named with us in mind. The new
facility will not only focus on fitness but also provide students the opportunity
to de-stress, unwind, socialize or simply engage in quiet reflection.
BOARD REPORTBY JODI CONNORYEAR END ROUND-UPIt seems like yesterday that the doors of Confederation College opened the doors for new and returning students
alike and a new semester of studies began; hard to believe that we are already at the end of April once again. I am
extremely proud to have served the students as President of SUCCI and was able to, along with my team, bring
all kids of fun and exciting events, activities, projects, and initiatives to our College environment and community.
One of the biggest challenges I faced this year was the Atrium Revitalization Project, a space where students could
relax and focus on their studies as an individual and collaborate with their classmates on projects and assignments.
What you see in the Atrium right now is Phase 1 of the project with Phase 2 to begin next year. I have already seen
students utilizing the new seating areas and have received positive feedback which is good to hear.
