Answer the following question with the munchkins at your table.

Question: What is a reform? Think of a problem at Tamanend and create a reform with those at your table.

Objectives

1. Recognize the reforms attempted by Diocletian and Constantine.

Main Idea

Reforms were attempted but they could not save the Roman Empire.

A. Diocletian Reforms

1. Reform – a change to make things better

2. Divided the empire into four parts – why?

3. Named officials for them but really ruled all

4. Set wages for workers to slow inflation

5. Ordered workers to stay at jobs until they died – why?

End Result: Reforms fail – why?

B. Constantine Reforms

1. Sons had to do their fathers job – why?

2. Did not help the decline in the west

3. Moved the capital to a new city in the east – Constantinople – modern day what?

4. Built many public buildings

End Result: Reforms fail in west, work in east. The Capital moves to the east!!!
