Dear Friends – Do you remember the book by Robert Fulghum titled, “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”? It’s a fun read and includes some profound wisdom for sharing life with others. It includes such tidbits of wisdom as: “Don’t hit people,” “flush,” “say you’re SORRY when you HURT somebody,” and (my favorite) “warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.” As adults we sometimes need to be reminded of the basics!

So, I have been thinking of writing a book entitled, “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Vacation Bible School”, for in V. B. S. we are often reminded of the basics of our faith. This year’s V. B. S. has a space theme geared to excite students and attract our attention while teaching some of those basics. Even though decorations, music, crafts, etc. have an “out of this world” appeal, the stories and message are familiar. The main Bible verse for the week is Ephesians 3:20, “Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by His power at work within us!” What a strong message for our children and leaders to receive.

Each day of Vacation Bible School has a different Bible Story and “power launcher” or message: Day One – Daniel Trusts God in the Lions’ Den is the story; the power launcher is Go Beyond with

Faith! Day Two – Queen Esther Takes a Stand; Go Beyond with Boldness! Day Three – The Good Samaritan Helps a Fellow Traveler; Go Beyond with Kindness! Day Four – Jesus Heals 10 Lepers; Go Beyond with Thankfulness! Day Five – Jesus Comforts Friends on the Way to Emmaus; Go Beyond with Hope!

These basics are important for all of us! To know that we can place our faith in God. That sometimes our faith calls upon us to be bold. That kindness is part of our identity as Christians. That gratitude is a key part of our faith. And that we can always place our hope in Jesus Christ.

I hope that you will be in prayer for our students and leaders. Pray that the lessons of Vacation Bible School will continue to have an impact into the future, and that we will remember and use this wisdom for sharing our faith life together and with others. I will be adding my prayers of gratitude for all who helped and participated in this year’s V. B. S.; I am grateful for Joanne Combs and her crew! See you in church!

Denise

Deacon’s Corner

Happy June! The summer is here and it’s HOT! Some of our winter members are headed back north. We wish them safe travels and a beautiful summer in their native states. As things heat up down here in Florida, it’s important to re-member to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and cover up to prevent sunburns. The summer can be enjoyable if we take proper precautions. The Lord gives us this lovely weather, but also gives us the ability to handle it wisely and thoughtfully. Also, the children are getting out of school. Please keep their safety in mind as well.

Our Food Pantry in May brought 85 families. Special thanks go out to the Boy Scouts for collecting six grocery carts full of food. Also, to our local Cub Scouts that packed plastic bags with laundry detergent and toilet paper for the Food Pantry.

Brown bags were passed out on Mother’s Day and collected the last weeks of May. They will be handed out again on July 14th so keep an eye out for those if you wish to participate. We are so blessed with such a giving congregation. The brown bags are always a success and it’s all because of our wonderful community in which we serve. The recipi-ents of a bag of groceries every month are truly grateful and feel blessed to have such a program and a place to come to in their time of need.

The Food Pantry doesn’t only accept food. We accept many additional items (with the exception of clothing). These extra items are set out on a first-come, first-serve basis each Food Pantry day and it’s always a huge success. Cleaning supplies, toiletry items, among many other things are accepted and set out for those who wish to pick them up.

Our Food Pantry is open the second Thursday of every month from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. We open the doors at 9:00 AM to give us time to catch up and fellowship with our neighbors and friends. We are all blessed by this time to spend with them.

We also have Volunteers whom we wish to thank. Giving their time is so appreciated by the Deacons and the recipi-ents of our Pantry. If anyone would like to help or serve the church and the community, this is the place for you! We can use all the help we can get. It’s greatly appreciated and a great time to meet and greet the people we serve.

It’s also necessary to thank our amazing Congregation for the ability to help so many and provide a way to lighten their load a bit. It’s also our Congregation we are here for. You are also our friends, neighbors and families. We are here to answer any questions or concerns, prayer requests or just someone to talk to. We are never too busy to spend time with anyone who needs it.

Have a safe and blessed summer!

God Bless,

Your Board of Deacons

MISSIONARIES In June our Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study Class will be praying for Bob and Kristi Rice, Missionaries to South Sudan since 2017 (previously in the Democratic Republic of Congo (2010-2017). Kristi wrote the letter below in April of this year.

“In February I was able to travel to Rwanda with another PCUSA missionary Shelvis Smith-Mather and several others. In Rwanda, we saw, heard and experienced the story of Rwanda and the Genocide and how Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (PIASS) has responded and continues to seek to respond with God’s healing and redemptive power. …The Body of Christ is vast and wide; we have so much to learn from each other. As Presbyterian mission co-workers, we are privileged not only to walk alongside global partners, but to resource and connect them to one another in ways that are life-giving and healing. Thank you for standing with us as we stand alongside our partners here in Africa. May our God of wonders and majesty lift you up on eagle’s wings as we celebrate the glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “Imana ibahe umugisha” (may the Lord bless you).” Please join us as we pray for Bob and Kristi and the people in South Sudan (and all missionaries and people in our world).

News from Christian Education Vacation Bible School is here, June 3rd through 7th, 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Participants will enjoy

a light dinner then head for Mars and Beyond. Go to our Facebook page, "First Presbyterian Church Zephyrhills, FL" to see the video and details.

Our Wednesday Night Dinner can use some helpers to prepare and serve.

Joanne Combs is planning a Jesus' Clubhouse Newsletter to be E-mailed regularly.

In January, a Sunday School Class for Middle School and High School is being planned and will be taught by Megan Hall.

First Presbyterian's other classes and studies are continuing as usual..

Outreach and Missions

The Outreach and Missions team is asking everyone traveling this summer if they would collect and bring back unused toiletry items from hotels and motels, if you are not going to use them yourself. We hope to put together ‘care’ packages of these items, along with others, for residents of two long-term care facilities, Wellspring Assisted

living and Azaleas Assisted Living. We prepared and distributed to Wellspring, packages of items we had received prior to the last Sermons of Service. We found this to be greatly appreciated by the Wellspring residents and understand that there are similar

needs at the Azaleas facility. Remember, these need to be unopened containers. Thanks for whatever you can contribute.

HAVING COMMUNION WITH THE COMMUNION

Have you ever had a “God Moment?” Well, I did about a month ago! And, I want to share it with you. While reading John 12:1-8 recently (which I have many times before), about Jesus visiting Bethany six days before the Passover, the Holy Spirit had me park on verse 2,

“Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.” (NIV) This visit followed Jesus calling Lazarus from the dead. Suddenly, I thought, “What did they talk about?” Did Lazarus tell Jesus that he had seen angels or Moses or maybe even the Throne while he was in the tomb for three days? Did Jesus ask him what he thought about heaven, or was there only small talk like, “The weather is extremely hot today; I wonder what Martha is fixing for dinner; where is Mary?” Maybe we will have the opportunity to ask those questions when we go to Life Eternal, or maybe we won’t. The next thought — the God Moment — was that Lazarus was having communion with The Communion! Christ in the flesh would soon be remembered and received through the elements of His body and blood. Imagine that . . . communing with The Communion. We, two thousand years later, have the same privilege. Our Stephen Ministry refrain is Christ caring for people through people. Granted, we may not visibly see Him sitting next to us, but we have been promised that He indwells us by the Power of His Holy Spirit. Christ, through your Stephen Minister, can comfort, listen, accept, cry with, laugh with, pray with, share your innermost thoughts with and love you with the same love that Lazarus experienced. We just finished the Holy season of Lent and celebrated The Resurrection — a new beginning. You or someone you know may need to start anew. Christ is extending His hand to you. Won’t you extend yours to Him and have communion with The Communion? Please see a Stephen Minister or call the church office. Put your hand in ours.

In Him, Patty Joyce, Stephen Leader

Three-Cents-A-Meal

Three-Cents-A-Meal offering will be taken on the second Sunday of June. Our church has accepted this mission offering for many years now. The small amount per person is less than 10 cents a day. Two people for a 30-day month is only $5.40 a month; a nice round number for two months is $10 or three months $15. These Mission funds are shared 1/3 with Presbytery for their work, 1/3 to Cedarkirk and 1/3 is retained by our church for

Mission work.

Cedarkirk is a year round camp and conference center owned by the Presbyteries of Tampa Bay and Peace River. It is located on the Alafia River within 170 acres of woodlands,

wetlands, and uplands. Cedarkirk is dedicated to providing a place for individuals and groups to have the opportunity for spiritual renewal and growth in a natural environment.
