Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. There is still much to see in one of the best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries. The east end of the noble 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments. The bath house walls here are the tallest surviving remains along the Frontier. The remarkably well preserved remains are associated with the Roman fort of Ravenglass, established in AD130 on the site of a slightly earlier fortlet. The monument is significant because so few Roman buildings in Britain survive to such a height, with windows, doorways, niche and internal rendering still adhering to wall surfaces in many places. For almost three centuries, Hadrian’s Wall was a vibrant, multi-cultured frontier sprawling some 80 miles coast-to-coast with a further 70 miles of coastal defences in West Cumbria. At six metres high in places and built by a force of no more than 15,000 men in under six years, it’s as astounding today for its sheer vision as it is for its engineering. Milecastles, barracks, ramparts and forts punctuate the route and the landscape of the Whin Sill, the rock on which much of the Wall was built, provides a dramatic backdrop. Explore bath houses, turrets and shrines, and visit galleries and museums using the latest technology and full-sized building reconstructions to transport you back to Hadrian’s reign. You can even watch live excavations uncover fresh details of ancient Roman Britain before your eyes, and get involved in a fantastic events programme. You can walk or cycle from Segedunum in urban Tyneside across The Northumberland National Park to the coastal defences of West Cumbria, or dip in and out, exploring forts and museums using excellent road and rail links. However you discover it, Hadrian’s Wall is a unique, must-see monument and a remarkable place to experience. Travelling to and around Hadrian’s Wall Country Hadrian’s Wall Country is a great eco-tourism destination, only 3 hours from London by train, with connections from most major UK cities stopping in either Carlisle or Newcastle. The fabulously scenic Hadrian’s Wall Country line runs from Newcastle to Carlisle via Hexham and links up with local bus services. The Cumbrian Coast Line is just the ticket for Maryport and Ravenglass. Within Newcastle, the Tyne and Wear Metro is particularly useful for Arbeia and Segedunum. National Express coaches run from all over the country to Newcastle and Carlisle. The Hadrian’s Wall Country AD122 bus takes you to many of the Roman sites and is handy for walkers. The bus runs during the summer months and connects with other local and regional bus and rail services. By car, good motorway and trunk roads lead to Hadrian’s Wall Country. All Roman forts and museums, and many sections of the Wall are accessible by car, with parking at all major sites. Walk the Wall Voted the nation’s favourite, the 84-mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail takes you from Bowness-on-Solway in the west to Wallsend in the east, or vice versa. The path is mainly grass, so the best time of year to enjoy the route is May to October, when the impact to the sensitive archaeology beneath your boots is lessened. Pick up a trail ‘passport’ and have it stamped along the way to record your achievement! Many circular and linear do-in-a-day walks are available for all abilities. The Maryport to Allonby cycle path is brilliant for a family adventure, and more experienced cyclists can enjoy quiet roads around Hadrian’s Wall, or even venture beyond the Wall to the site of an outlying fort at Bewcastle. Set entirely in a World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Cycleway (NCN 72) starts in Ravenglass and follows the line of the Cumbrian coastal defences and Hadrian’s Wall for 174 miles.
