Büyükçekmece is a district and municipality in the suburbs of Istanbul, Turkey on the Sea of Marmara coast of the European side, west of the city. It is largely an industrial area with a population of 380,000.
Buyukcekmece is one of the most beautiful districts of Istanbul and it is located on the eastern side of Buyukcekmece Lake, which channels into the Marmara Sea. Buyukcekmece is in the western reaches of Istanbul, and is situated on Catalca Peninsula, surrounded by the Marmara sea to the south, and Buyukcekmece Lake to the north.Buyukcekmece, located between the Marmara sea and the lagoon lake – a unique geographical formation
Buyukcekmece is now a beautiful district with both clean air and modern buildings. Until the 1990s the Buyukcekmece area was principally a place for summer holidays where people from Istanbul enjoyed swimming and walking on the beaches. After that , because of the urbanization throughout the city, Buyukcekmece became the district of Istanbul and the people from the other parts of Istanbul started to move to this quiet scenic area for more peaceful and relaxing life.
In the centre of Büyükçekmece itself, there are still tea gardens on the seafront and other places for kids to play while their families sit, picnic and enjoy the sea views.
These are now used by day trippers from the city, especially the nearby dense working-class housing areas such as Avcılar, Bahçelievler, Bakırköy and etc.

While Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566) was going to Szigetvar, he encountered difficulty in crossing over on rafts at the point where Buyukcekmece Lake and sea meets and ordered a bridge to be constructed there. However, as Sultan Suleiman died in Szigetvar siege, his son Selim II completed the bridge in 1567.
