Personal Statement

I was always told that having a college education is important. I never realized how important it was until I got out into the “real world” and realized that a college education is not only important, it is a necessity. I have a deep appreciation for my degree; and I have come a long way to get it.

After graduating high school in 1996, I went to a local community college to begin my college career. Through a year of trials and tribulations, I flunked out. In order to get back into school, I had to re-apply and write a letter to the board of admissions to get back in; so I did. I was allowed to enter back into school on a 90 day probationary period. I took a light course load and worked part time until I got married to a United States Marine in 1999.

When my daughter was born in 2000, I decided that I needed to once again, return to school because I had come to the realization that I was now responsible for another human being! In the fall of 2001, I returned to a local community college, yet again. I went to school part time and was a stay at home mom. I continued my education through another pregnancy and a 13 month deployment that my (now) ex husband was on.

Personal Statement

My son was born in 2003, and my ex husband returned from his deployment, we were re stationed and I, again, joined the local community college. I went to school part time while staying at home with my children.

In 2004, I decided to kick things up a notch and join an on line university that catered to military families. I went to school on line, and was able to complete an Associates in Social Psychology degree in June of 2006.

I joined Argosy in the fall of 2007 and have gone full time almost every semester. I sit here today in disbelief that this day has finally arrived. I have worked on this goal through marriage, pregnancy, deployments, and even a divorce. Nothing has stopped me. I am a head strong, independent woman who gets what she wants through hard work and dedication.

So, I would say that my personal statement would be: Through hard work, dedication, and determination, I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to.

Reflection

My time at Argosy has been amazing. I have received support from the advisors, teachers, and other students. I have learned many different skills that are necessary not only for the completion of my degree, but for life in general.

I have learned critical thinking, information literacy, research methods, ethics, diversity, active listening, and both oral and written communication skills. I feel I have a great deal of knowledge in the field of psychology, it’s theoretical perspectives, and most importantly, I feel I can apply that knowledge.

My Future in Learning

Learning is a lifelong process. I will continue to soak up knowledge where ever I can, as I consider knowledge to be power. I hope to continue my educational goals with Argosy University in the Master’s of Business Administration program. With an MBA, I will be able to further my career and transition into a management position.
