At Home Learning Resources

Iowa 4-H Youth Development is committed to providing youth and their families with research-based, accessible online learning opportunities. A collection of online educational resources for K-12 youth audiences is available on the 4-H At Home Learning Resources webpage. These engaging educational resources from the local, state and national 4-H program are available for all youth and their families to further explore project area learning virtually.

From aerospace to animal science, 4-H educational opportunities are available online to empower youth to be in the driver’s seat of their learning experiences as they engage in developing a skill or learning more about a specific 4-H project area,” said Debbie Nistler, state 4-H program leader with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “The 4-H At Home Learning Resources are providing opportunities for youth to engage in interactive, online learning communities and help provide youth with a sense of belonging in what can be scary and challenging times.”

In addition to the 4-H At Home Learning Resources, Iowa 4-H Youth Development will provide new educational content online on a focused topic of learning each week for youth audiences to engage with. Topics will include, but are not limited to, healthy living, civic engagement and leadership, communication and the arts, 4-H project area discovery, and STEM learning.

COVID-19 Livestock Update

With COVID-19 comes changes to our Livestock Deadline and weigh-ins. Yesterday morning a press release was sent to all Iowa 4-H & FFA staff announcing that all 4-H/FFA livestock weigh-ins were being canceled. Offi-cial press release and FAQs related to the weigh-ins & ID deadline can be located on the State 4-H Livestock page. Below will describe the specific details to Crawford County. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock

Sheep/Meat Goat – Weigh-in scheduled for May 3rd is Cancelled. We are going to see what the next couple week brings and will decide whether we can reschedule. If we can’t reschedule Market sheep & meat goats will not have a rate of gain category. Retinal Imaging is still required for Sheep & Meat Goats to continue to the Iowa State Fair. If we do not have a weigh-in, we will set up a time with families to get those retinal images done. We will also set up a time for families to get their ear tags if it comes to that.

Livestock ID Deadline – the deadline to ID livestock has been bumped back to June 1st this year. This applies to ALL livestock that are usually identified by May 15 including: Breeding Beef, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, Dog, Horse, Meat Goat, Poultry, Sheep and Swine. Rabbits will remain at the July 1 deadline. Please do not wait un-til last minute to complete this task!

Swine Ear Tags & Taggers – if you need to get ear tags please fill out the jot form. We will have a pickup day to pick these tags up. The date is to be determined.

https://form.jotform.com/200865040781048

We will be using a new USDA tag this year for all swine. We WILL have to have ear notches this year. Fair swine we will be using a NEW DNA punch collector. The same process as in the past, pick up ear tags, tagger and State Fair punch collectors and envelope for State Fair. Return the envelope on or before June 1st. We only have one State Fair punch collector so it will be important that the punch collector gets used and returned within the same day or the next day. We also have an ear notcher and a guide if needed. Fill out the above jot form for State DNA punch collector.

Breeding Beef & Bottle Calves – don’t forget you also need to pick up ear tags and ID them in 4hOnline. Con-tact Aubrey at [email protected]

Breeding Beef – ALL breeding beef will need to have a tattoo just like last year! We have a tattooer, ink and numbers. Please let me know when you would like it as we will set up a time to come to the Crawford County Extension Office to pick it up and we only have one so it will need to be returned the same day or the following day!

Poultry – there will NOT be any Pullorum testing this year!

All other animals are the same and need to be ID’d in 4hOnline by June 1st!

YQCA – Please have your YQCA completed by June 1st! http://yqca.org/

Crawford County Fair entries will still be due July 1st! Next moths newsletter will have help sheets!

FFA Members – you will still need to complete a paper ID form by June 1st and return to the Crawford County Extension Office! https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock

This year we are continuing to use Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) and phasing out Food Safety

Quality Assurance (FSQA) training for animal exhibitors. BQA and PQA will not be accepted at all. Although, YQCA

does cover for BQA and PQA if youth are needing those certifications for personal reasons.

We are still allowed to honor FSQA tests this year if they have not expired yet. YQCA needs to be taken by June

1st.

To take YQCA,:

1. Log on to yqca.org with your 4hOnline account.

2. Choose the level based on the individual’s age on September 15th, 2019.

3. Complete all modules and pass each 10 question quiz. Youth must wait 1 hour to re-take a failed quiz. All three

must be passed to receive a certificate.

4. Print/save your completion certificate and either email to [email protected] or mail to the extension office.

5. Contact the extension office if you need ANY assistance!

6. There is a $12 fee to complete this training. In Crawford County the Cattleman’s are willing to cover the

cost with a coupon. To be eligible for that coupon you have to sell $250 worth of fruit and butter braids.
