Toomer’s Corner reopened at noon on August 15—two days ahead of schedule. The Bailey-Harris team removed the barricades, took down the fences,

opened the corner to traffic and, just like that, Auburn was whole again. Pure joy. Let the cash registers sing and the merchants rejoice.

The summer of 2015 was challenging in many ways. Recently, in the midst of construction in every direction, the Auburn City Council was presented with pages of research and statistics and, with only eight days to digest the data and poll their constituents, asked to consider expanding and extending the current moratorium on multi-family development. The community was divided. Many, rightly so, were vocal in their concerns on both sides of the issue. Because the board of directors of the Auburn Chamber felt the process was flawed in that it gave very little time for the issues to be vetted and formally recommended to the City Council, we proposed the ordinance be removed from the August 8 agenda. Fortunately, our elected officials, on the advice of the business community and others, slowed the process to allow more time for discussion between officials and the public in hopes of reaching common ground on this most complex issue. Work sessions and public meetings are

being planned so that all sides will have an opportunity to be heard. The Auburn Chamber will be soliciting your thoughts on the future of Auburn development in the coming weeks and hope that you will take the time to share your feelings. The businesses of Auburn are a vital part of this community and should be a part of the process and solution. I am confident that those we elected and appointed will find a common ground.

As the summer of 2015 comes to a close, a new and exciting season awaits. Let us remember to celebrate all that is Auburn—25,000+ students who have chosen Auburn University to further their education, a renewed urban space in the heart of our community and our mighty Auburn Tiger fans who will soon be flocking back to the Plains to cheer them on. Last, but not least, let’s celebrate the fact that each one of us has the pleasure of calling Auburn our home. War Eagle!

Officials at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital recently announced an orthopaedic surgery residency program in collaboration with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM). The program has selected six incoming residents: David G. Barnes, DO; Roman Ashmyan, DO; J. Ryan Mahoney, Timothy Beals, DO; Samuel C. Pitts, DO; and Samuel E. Thomas, DO.

All residents officially started the program at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital on July 1 under the guidance of Robert Harris, MD, director of medical education, and program directors David MacDonald, DO, and Jesse Pace, DO. The residents will follow a five-year track of orthopaedic education.

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital and VCOM both believe in providing medical education and research that prepares globally-minded, community-focused physicians who improve the health of those most in need. The residency program includes specific training in all areas of general orthopaedic surgery: sports medicine, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, pediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, adult reconstruction, spine and rehabilitation. During their time in the Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital program, the residents will rotate to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta and Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning.

“Faculty at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital share the same excitement releasing this statement,” said Mark Baker, CEO. “We have been planning this for over two years and to see it become a reality is a great testament to the commitment of our staff in pursuing excellence in research, education and treatment.”

SpiCer’S MUSiC nAMed one of The WorLd’S Top 100 MUSiC SToreS And BeST eMerGinG deALer for 2015Spicer’s Music, located in Auburn, has been named one of the world’s top musical instrument and product retailers and the Best Emerging Dealer for 2015. The global association for the

music products industry, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), presented Spicer’s Music with the Top 100 honor and with the Best Emerging Dealer award during the industry’s recent trade event, Summer NAMM, in Nashville.

“We are overjoyed and honored to be named one of the world’s top 100 music stores and to accept the award for Best Emerging Dealer of 2015. We can’t thank

our community enough for the amazing support we have received since our opening. Thank you to our incredible staff and instructors for the hard work! We are excited to see what opportunities arise in these next few years to further cultivate music and arts in our region,” said Tim Spicer, owner of Spicer’s Music.

The Top 100 designation recognizes:

• a demonstrated commitment to exceptional customer service;

• proven community advocacy and support for music education;

• an exemplary retail experience worth returning for and recommending to others;

• merchandising and marketing tactics that encourage repeat sales;

• sound planning for future success, and the employment of marketing and training initiatives

• engaging and effective use of web and social media

Spicer’s Music, LLC was also identified as the Best Emerging Dealer for 2015 and was one of three candidates for the Dealer of the Year award, NAMM’s highest honor for music retailers. Winners were announced at the July 10, 2015, award ceremony in Nashville.

Businesses vying for Top 100 status are evaluated for a sound business model, resourceful approaches, and effective implementation of best practices. A panel of independent judges scored each entry to determine the Top 100. Dubbed the “retail Oscars” by Music Inc. magazine, NAMM’s Top 100 Dealer awards spotlights the industry’s very best music product retailers.

“We are so thrilled to receive the Best Emerging Dealer award and to be nominated as one of the top three dealers in the world. From the beginning, our vision has been to establish a comfortable, family-friendly, full-service music business that encourages love of music in our community,” said Tim Spicer.

Tim recently had the opportunity to join music industry leaders in Washington D.C. to advocate for music and art education in public schools across the nation. “This was the first time Alabama was represented in this effort, and

we were glad to lend support to this important cause,” said Tom Spicer, co-owner and father to Tim. “Since opening the store in December of 2012, we have worked hard to provide the space, programming, and resources needed to allow people to connect to music and to each other. Building on this foundation, we are determined to work even harder to make music an ever-increasing part of our community for years to come.”

rApA hiTS eMpLoYMenT MiLeSToneIn the short year since the start of production, one of Auburn’s newest manufacturing companies has hit several milestones. Rausch & Pausch LP, located in the West Technology Park, reached the 100 employee mark on July 13.

According to Kelly Nelson, CEO and president of RAPA LP, “Our ability to reach the 100 associate mark is the direct result of the hard work of our associates, and the successful launch of three product lines to support U.S. and European automotive manufacturers.” He continued on by saying, “The vision, strategy and support of the RAPA Group in Germany has been paramount to the Auburn plant’s success. Without the strategic standardization teams, the detailed training and investment in our people, we could not be in this position.”

In addition to reaching these key milestones, RAPA employees participated in the March of Dimes drive and received recognition as best newcomer in fund raising.

“We are proud to be part of the Auburn community and encourage our team to be active participants in supporting this community in many charitable activities,” said Nelson.

Rausch & Pausch produces precision automotive parts including solenoid values and air suspension technology for manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ferrari and Porsche. The company, founded in 1920, is a privately held German corporation with the home office located in Northern Bavaria.
