    The Epsom Campus is the main campus or the

    Faculty o Education. Located less than 10

    minutes drive rom the CBD and the City

    Campus, Epsom Campus is a short walk away

    rom the cas and shops o Mt Eden village.

    Theres car parking on campus and regular busservices run to and rom Mt Eden/Epsom and the

    city.

    Epsom Campus is a close-knit and multicultural

    campus with around 5,000 students. There are

    plenty o study spaces, computer rooms, library

    resources, student support services and acilities.

    The campus also has tennis courts, a swimming

    pool, sports centre, marae and early childhood

    centres.

    The Foundation Certifcate Tohu Tuapapa Matauranga will be oered at Tai Tokerau Campus in 2012 i

    a sufcient number o people wish to study the certifcate at this location.

    Tai Tokerau Campus in Whangarei is a convenient study location i you live in Northland. The campus iswithin walking distance o the centre o Whangarei and oers a small, riendly and supportive learning

    environment. There are approximately 120 students enrolled at the campus.

    social work or human services but dont meet The

    University o Aucklands entry requirements or

    programmes in these areas, completing a

    Foundation Certifcate in Education can help you

    reach your goal.

    During your oundation certifcate study you will

    learn the study skills and discipline required to be

    successul in urther study. It is also an

    opportunity to gain an insight into subjects you

    may be thinking o studying in the uture.

    What youll be studying

    The certifcate ocuses on developing skills in

    communication, critical thinking, essay writing

    and time management. Youll develop essential

    academic skills or urther study and learn the

    numeracy and computing skills essential ortertiary study.

    Youll also become better inormed about your

    options or urther study in Education and be able

    to choose rom electives relevant to uture study

    in social work, teaching or human services.

    You will learn a variety o skills needed to be

    successul in you study and learn about yoursel,

    how you think and why you think that way.Through this youll discover what helps you to

    achieve your goals.

    To show your understanding o what you have

    learned, you will use dierent mediums to

    present inormation including essays and digital

    video presentation. You will also learn about the

    New Zealand Education system and how it

    developed.

    Successul completion o this programme allows

    admission to The University o Auckland or

    Faculty o Education undergraduate

    programmes*, and students usually go on to

    study a bachelors degree (see pg. 5).

    and meet all other additional selection

    Programme structure

    A student enrolled in this certifcate must pass

    eight courses (120 points) rom the courses listed

    in the Foundation Certifcate Education schedule

    including:

    Academic Literacy I

    An introduction to relevant academic literacy andstudy skills, providing students with skills to access a

    wide range o inormation literacy strategies.

    Academic Literacy II

    Extends students academic literacy into more

    complex uses o inormation, academic writing and

    reading skills, and strategies or management o

    time and resources.

    EDFOUND 12F

    Introduction to Computing

    Introduces students with little previous computing

    experience to basic word processing, database

    development, and spreadsheets. Course participants

    choose work related tasks to develop word

    processing, database and spreadsheet skills. These

    skills will be embedded in the context o tertiary

    study.

    EDFOUND 13F

    Child Development and Learning

    An overview o language and learning development,

    introducing strategies or helping children to develop

    as learners and readers.

    EDFOUND 14F

    An Introduction to the New Zealand Education

    System

    Includes a ocus on the diversity o education at all

    levels. Introduces students to the historicaldevelopment o the New Zealand education system

    and the governance o this system, to the curriculum

    in New Zealand with a ocus on the concept o

    curriculum, the range o current curriculum

    documents, and the proessional nature o teaching.

    EDFOUND 15F

    Mathematics Preliminary

    Basic mathematics including an understanding o

    arithmetic ideas (knowledge and strategies),ractions, decimals and percentages; ratio and

    proportion, algebraic thinking, measurement using

    the metric system, and estimation and its uses in

    context.

    EDFOUND 16F

    Science and Mathematics for Teaching

    Mathematics and science or teacher education

    students in preparation or degree level study.

    EDFOUND 17FPasika Academic Literacy

    Particular consideration will be given to an

    understanding o the whole person within Pasifka

    contexts, teaching and learning processes or

    success, sel-management strategies, and

    development o communication skills.

    SOCWORK 10F

    Social Services in Aotearoa New Zealand

    Introduces students to a wide range o socialservices organisations and examines the provision o

    welare and contributions o a range o groups rom

    grass roots community organisations to

    government agencies.

    SOCWORK 11F

    Aotearoa Society in Context

    Considers the migration stories o the many peoples

    who make up Aotearoa New Zealand society, and

    explores some contemporary issues and trends with

    particular reerence to education and social services.

    Particular consideration will be given to Te Tiriti o

    Waitangi.

    I didnt think about becoming a teacher until I

    had fnished school, so the oundation certifcate

    gave me the opportunity to gain the qualifcations

    I needed to get into the bachelors degree and

    prepare me or tertiary study. It was a valuable

    steeping stone that prepared me or the University

    environment and expectations o degree study.

    Knowing what lecturers expect, meeting deadlines

    and just being amiliar with the campus really

    helped when starting my degree.

    Im now studying to become a primary school

    teacher. Ive enjoyed meeting new people and the

    satisaction o completing assignments, tests and

    courses. I highly recommend the oundation

    certifcate as it is great preparation or urther

    University study and a way to get used to the

    University requirements, expectations and

    environment.

    Max Taupo completed a Foundation Certifcate

    Education and is now in his frst year o studytoward a Bachelor o Education (Teaching) Primary

    develop your knowledge o tikanga Mori. You

    will also develop literacy, numeracy and essential

    study skills or urther tertiary study.

    Where can it take you?

    Successul completion o this certifcate allowsadmission to The University o Auckland or

    Faculty o Education undergraduate

    programmes* including the Bachelor o Education

    (Teaching) Huarahi Mori Specialisation - a

    three-year degree that qualifes you to teach in

    Mori medium and bilingual schools as well as

    mainstream primary and intermediate schools.

    Other programmes are available in the areas

    o teaching, social work and human services

    (see pg. 5).

    Course descriptions

    All courses are worth 15 points.

    EDFOUNDM 10F

    Te P

    Introduction to unctional and instructional Mori

    including everyday vocabulary, basic sentence

    structures, pronouns, possessives and positional

    language. Aspects o tikanga will include meeting

    and greeting people with waiata, karakia and

    hmene, and values such as whnau,

    whakawhanaungatanga and aroha. Reerring to

    their own hap/iwi students will introduce and

    locate themselves in relation to their whakapapa

    and carry out a short mihi.

    EDFOUNDM 11F

    Te More

    Builds on the introductory course Te P. Sentencestructures will be extended into tenses, negatives,

    passives and more complex possessives and phrases.

    The pwhiri will be the context or tikanga studies

    along with values and practices such as manaaki,

    awhi and koha. Hap/iwi studies will include the

    study o students own marae history and pepeha.

    EDFOUNDM 12F

    Te Weu

    Students Mori language skills will be extended to

    include particles, adverbs, prefxes, sufxes and

    transitive verbs and prepositions. The marae will be

    the context or tikanga studies along with the values

    o tautoko, tapu/noa and mana. Hap/iwi studies

    will include whaikrero, pepeha, waiata, tupuna,

    kaumatua/kuia.

    EDFOUNDM 13F

    Te Aka

    Study o complex Mori clauses and sentences,interrogatives and conditional constructions. Tikanga

    studies urther develop the context o the marae to

    include the tangi, kawe mate, hura khatu and rhui.

    Hap/iwi studies involve study o taonga and art

    rom students own rohe.

    EDFOUNDM 14F

    Te Rea

    Study o Te Reo Mori including complex negatives,

    particles, verbs and agents. Tikanga studies explore

    Mori cosmology including te kore, te po, te ao, and

    ng atua. Hap/iwi studies introduce students to Te

    Tiriti o Waitangi, Tino Rangatiratanga and related

    Iwi initiatives. Students carry out an independent

    study on a topic o their choice pertaining to their

    own hap/iwi.

    EDFOUNDM 15F

    Te Whakahaere Thuratanga

    Intended or students who may already have tertiary

    study experience but limited Mori language skills.Students carry out a structured investigation

    whereby they can demonstrate and apply study skills

    already gained rom other contexts.

    EDFOUNDM 16F

    Te Rangahau Kaupapa Mori

    Intended or students who may already have tertiary

    study experience but limited Mori language skills.

    Students carry out an investigation on a topic o

    their choice related to their own hap/iwi.

    EDFOUNDM 17F

    Te Anga Marautanga o Aotearoa

    An examination o Mori language and content in

    the Te Anga Marautanga o Aotearoa.

    EDFOUNDM 18F

    Te Reo Ttai

    Development o numeracy skills within a Mori

    language context to the level o current NCEA

    requirements or entry to university.

    EDFOUNDM 19F

    Te Reo Ako o te Whare Wnanga

    Academic literacy in Mori language contexts.

    I wanted to pursue this qualifcation because it was

    a bridging course that could prepare me or a

    degree. I elt I needed to do this frst to understand

    a tertiary institutions standards and procedures.

    Next year I want to study to become a Mori

    teacher who will make positive strides in excellence

    or our education system.

    I enjoy the environment o the campus and the

    acilities it oers to its students. You are welcomed

    in to a warm and inviting environment and your

    classroom lecturer is one o a kind. The knowledge

    and teachings rom not only the lecturers but other

    students too are the things I fnd most valuable rom

    my studies.

    How do you get in?

    Applicants must:

    Be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent

    resident o New Zealand.

    and

    Have completed NCEA level 2 at a New

    Zealand secondary school or its equivalent.

    or

    Be over 20 years o age.

    Personal reerences and an interview are part o

    the selection process.

    study a Foundation Certifcate.

    Fees and money matters

    Fees or 2012 will to be set late in 2011. As a

    guide, tuition ees or 2011 (or a student enrolled

    ulltime in 120 points) were:

    Foundation Certifcate Education $582

    Foundation Certifcate

    Tohu Tpapa Mtauranga $582

    In addition to tuition ees, students pay a student

    services ee and a building levy. In 2011 (or a

    student enrolled ulltime in 120 points) these ees

    were approximately:

    Additional selection requirements or getting into aculty undergraduateprogrammes

    Successul completion o either oundation certifcate allows admission to The University o Auckland or Faculty o

    Education undergraduate programmes (only) and applicants will be oered a place in a programme provided they are

    successul in the selection process.

    The table below shows the additional selection requirements or Faculty o Education undergraduate programmes. All

    applicants must also meet certain standards o English language profciency or, in the case o Mori immersion

    programmes, te reo Mori and English. Other checks on suitability may also be required.

    Bachelor o Social Work (BSW) Interview, literacy assessment and reerees reports.

    Demonstrate the potential to meet the requirements o the

    Social Workers Registration Act.1. You must demonstrate the potential to meet the New Zealand Teachers Council criteria or provisional registration, which

    involves making a declaration o criminal convictions and a declaration o health conditions.
