FOREWORD
A warm and hearty welcome to all coin lovers….
I have great pleasure to introduce myself Sanjay Gosalia as a leading dealer in coins, stamps, medals and
currency notes.
I started on this journey way back in 1993. I was greatly influenced and inspired by eminent Philatelist of
that era late Shri Arvind Mangaldas Pakvasa my grand father‐in‐law. He was a winner of many naonal and
internaonal awards including the 'Grand Prix' (IPS Postal Stamps) award in Philadelphia for his exhibits of
postal stamps issued by Indian Princely States.
Further my father‐in‐law Shri Anuj Arvind Pakvasa an eminent coin collector started giing me coins along
with wrien history on every auspicious occasions. Gradually my interest in coin collecng increased and soon
around 2001 I started dealing in coins and stamps. Soon I became a member of many coin sociees in India and
Oriental Numismac Society (London) and Museum Society of Bombay. I am one of the founder member of
Mumbai Coin Society.
In the last few years I observed a growing interest in people for collecng items of historical value as hobby
and also as an investment. I believe an anquity collecon can be compared to an Insurance policy… It's like
paying a premium which will eventually fetch a good value for the collector.
I now put forth “BOMBAY AUCTIONS” which mainly aims to help the collectors to acquire material of
their interest at the best value. This would enhance their collecon and more importantly preserve our culture th
and heritage. We are holding our first aucon on 18 April 2014 at World trade Centre‐ Mumbai.
We take this opportunity to thank the following whose guidance and support made this possible. Shri
Anuj A. Pakvasa, Shri Farokh S. Todywalla, Shri Dilip Rajgor , Shri. Girish J. Veera , Shri Jagdish Gandhi , Shri
Dinesh Master , Shri Suketu Jhaveri, Shri Surendra Kotadia (All from Mumbai), and Shri Shatrughan Saravagi
(Ahmadabad). Special thanks to Mr. Stan Goran for friendly advice.
I thank my esteemed dealers and collectors for pung faith in my capability to start an aucon house.
The enre staff of “Bombay Aucons” awaits your suggesons and support.
Thanking You,
          Sanjay Gosalia
Happy collecng.

Chakradhvaj Simha succeeded his father soon after the Mughal invasion, and made sure his name was inscribed on the coinage. The coins come in two main categories : those in Assamese script with his Hindu name, and those in Ahom script with his Ahom name. The former all have the fixed date SE. 1585, while the latter are dated to the 15th year of the 60 year cycle (AD 1663). The coins of this reign continue to maintain their octagonal shape but a couple of round rupees are also known.

The decade after the death Chakradhvaja Simha was one of turmoil in Assam during which there were no fewer than five rulers, only a couple of which appear to have had time to strike coins. Gadadhar Managed to survive this period. Early in his regin he expelled the Muslims from Guwahati, thereby capturing a large amount of booty, which presumably enabled him to strike much of his coinage. All his coins are dated to the 33rd year of the 60 year cycle used by the Ahoms and the legends invoke the Ahom diety, Lengdon, often identified as Indra. One or more bird symbols also often occur on the coins, as does a lion.

Rudra Simha succeeded his father in AD 1696 and straightaway made significant changes to the coinage: the inscriptions were Sanskrit rather than Ahom, and engraved in Assamese script, and the coins (apart from the half rupees) began to bear the actual date of striking, not a fixed date. The coins also bear a Shaivite invocation. This very rare issue has a special legend describing the King as the Lord of Saumara. Saumara was the name of the eastern-most division of Kamarpura, i.e. upper Assam. The motif of a lion chasing a deer is also not found on any other issue of this ruler. This may well have been the issue prepared for the king's coronation ceremony.

It is reported that Shiva Simha was heavily influenced by Brahmins and Astrologers at his court and was worried that his reign would turn out to be a short one; therefore, in AD 1722 (Sk. 1644) he declared his queen, Phulesvari to be ruler in his place. A couple of years later her position must have strengthened to the extent that we find her name cited on all the coinage, not just the Mohurs and Rupees, and in such a way that the coins appear to be issued by the queen rather than the king.

Shiva Simha was succeeded by his brother, Pramatta Simha, whose initial coinage consisted of Rupees in Ahom script with an invocation to the Ahom deity, Lengdon. Thereafter, the coinage reverted to the Assamese-script type exemplified by the earlier coinage of Rudra Simha, and without citing any queen. In fact, from here on, there is no further mention of any queen on the coinage.

Rajesvara Simha during his reign, made some one-off innovations to the coinage. In this case he issued a series of coins in Sk. 1685 (AD 1763) in Persian Script instead of the usual Assamese script. These are known in the form of the Mohur, Rupee, half and quarter Rupee. Among these the square Persian script Rupee is very rare. While the octagonal Rupees of this Persian script issue are scarce.

The death of Rajesvara Simha in 1769 led to a succession dispute between those supporting Rudra Simha's youngest son, Lakshmi Simha, and those supporting Rajesvara's son. In the meantime, power was in the hand of the Borbarua, one of the five councillors of state, who on one occasion, seriously offended the Moamaria Gosain, a caste of Assamese Brahmins who were devotees of Vishnu and bore a grudge against the Ahom rulers. The Moamarias rebelled, captured the Ahom capital, and placed their own king on the throne in the form of Ramakant Simha. A few coins of this king are known and one remains in the Rhodes collection. The Moamaria rebellion was soon quelled and, in 1770, Lakshmi Simha retook possession of the throne and issued some Ahom-legend coins, with their invocation to Pha Lengdon. In his first year, apart from the very rare ahom-legend coins,Lakshmi Simha issued two types of Assamese-legend coins, this one with its Vaishnava invocations and the usual Sivaite type with its invocation to Hara and Gauri. The former may have been issued as an attempt to appease the Moamarias.

Gaurinatha Simha's reign was full of problems. It was not long before the Moamarias again attempted to rebel. This was unsuccessful and led to persecution of the Vaisnavas. This in turn, led to a serious revolt in 1789 (Sk. 1709), resulting in Gaurinatha fleeing from Rangpur to Guwahati. The rebels extended their control of upper Assam and, by 1791 (Sk. 1713), had installed their own king, Bharatha Simha, and began to strike coins in his name. Gaurinatha, confide to the western end of his kingdom and about to lose control og Guwahati, appealed to the British for help. This was too good an opportunity for the British to ignore, so they sent six companies of sepoys under Capt. Welish, recaptured Guwahati, and a year later managed to reinstall Gaurinatha on his throne in Rangpur.

When Kamalesvara Simha died in 1810, his younger brother, Chandrakanta Simha, replaced him. No coins are known in his name during this, the first of his two reigns. In 1816, a disgraced minister, the Bar Phukan, invited the Burmese to invade Assam. This they did, promoting the Bar Phukan to the position of Chief Minister and after receiving a large indemnity, they returned home. The new Chief Minister made many enemies and was soon assasinated. Nor did he have any supporters so the son of the late Burha Gohain, having taken refuge in Guwahati, was invited back as Chief Minister. This later did not support Chandrakant Simha, as he thought he was responsible for the recent travails that had beset the state; rather, he espoused the cause of Brajanath Simha, a great-grandson of Rajesvara Simha. chandrakanta fled to Rangpur, and Brajanatha took his place. Interestingly, it is reported that the preists were not wiling to formally install Brajanatha as king as he had a mutilated ear, it being an Ahom custom that the king should have no disfigurement. Instead they install his young son, Purandar Simha, as king in his stead. Effectively it must have been Brjanatha who held all the power as coins are known in his name, while none are known in the name of his son. No coins of Brajanatha Simha are common; they vary from scarce to very rare.

In 1819, supporters of Chandrakanta Simha again sought help from the Burmese. The latter agreed to help them and successfully invaded Assam. This time they did not return home but stayed, having restored Chandrakanta to the throne. The king, however was dissatisfied with being a Burmese puppet and fled to British territory from where he made a number of unsuccessful raids against the Burmese. When the Burmese failed to coax Chandrakanta back to Assam, they replace him with an Ahom prince of uncertain ancestory by name of Jogesvara Simha.

When Brajanatha Simha was expelled from Rangpur, another Moamaria rebel, Sarvananda Simha, set himself up as Raja of Matak, with his capital at Bengmara. Hardly anything is known about him except that he struck coins during the years Sk. 1715 - 1717 and apears to have handed control of the rebellion back to Bharatha as soon as the latter started striking coins again.

Coins of this ruler are rarely available and were probably issued in very limited quantities. This Rupee was struck in the month of Vaisakh (the second month of the Hindu calendar) Sk 1678 (AD 1756) most likely on the occasion of the installation of the king. Its weight is unusually high, which goes to support its ceremonial purpose. It was during this reign that Manipur first made contact with the British, due to the threat from the Burmese.

In 1812 AD, Chaurajit Singh's younger brother Marjit Singh sought help from the Burmese for ensuring the acquisition of the throne of Manipur, even agreeing to vassal status. Chaurajit was compelled to flee to Kachar, and Marjit became king, Although he agreed to vassal status, he ruled more or less indep[endently and struck a few gold and silver coins. in 1819 AD, Marjit offended the Burmese by refusing to attend the coronation ceremony of King Bagyidaw to pay homage, and a Burmese army invaded and expelled him to Kachar. The coin is the only Square coin known till date by N.Rhodes, listed in his catalouge. A great Rarity to collect.

There was no local coinage in Sikkim until the arrival of a number of Nepalese traders in the late 19th century. The Nepalese Pradhan brothers acquired some land and also the right to mine copper. Some of this copper they wished to use for striking coins which they hoped they could use for trade with Nepal and the Darjeling area. The coins, often poorly struck, are similar to contemporary Nepalese copper coins, except for the Sikkim legend. They were struck between 1883 and 1885. The dies bore dates but few of the coins show the date clearly. Parts of a date can be seen on a couple of the present coins. The weights of the issues vary between 4 and 6 g. The present coins weigh 5.58, 5.70, 5.01 and 5.58 g. Some coins have the obverse legend in three lines, other in four lines. This coin issue was not a success as neither the British nor the Nepalese allowed it to circulate within there respective jurisdictions.

The initial issues of Vira Chandra Manikya, which are known with the names of two queens, were hand-struck. After the appointment of a British resident in Agartala, which had become the capital during the reign of Krishna Manikya, machine struck coins, dated in the Bengal era, and apparently stuck in the UK, were issued. It is clear, however, that these coins were not intended for circulation, as only British Indian coinage is reported to have been in use within the state. It is interesting to note that most of the silver coins of this reign were struck on the Rupee standard, though some light-weight coins are also known. Extremly rare half and double Rupees are also known.

RY 6. F.Prid. 28.Very Fine+, Extremly Rare.Realised for : ̀ Estimate :` 1,60,000 - 1,70,000In 1693 the written records note that Emperor Aurangzeb was very displeased with an issue of coins from the East India Company in Bombay. A Khafi Khan from the emperor, in another source is reported visiting the Company at Bombay and complained of the name of the "Impure King" on the coins issued without his Emperor's authority, which were shown to him in A.H. 1105 (Sept.1693 - Aug. 1694). At Bombay, the East India Company had previously issued rupees with English text in 1677 but these failed to gain acceptability and were soon melted down. Aurangzeb objected specifically to the coin issued above, because it carried the names of King William III and Queen Mary. These coins he claimed could be confused with Aurangzeb's own coinage and thus provoked the emperor. The English in return explained that they coined money in their own King's name by stating that they had to purchase investments at places where the Mogul's money did not pass. The emperor's protest was effective and they ceased to issue any more coins and most were withdrawn and melted down, hence their scarcity today.
