DUES ARE DUE Anyone who attended Toronto High School is automatically an alumni of the school and is placed in the Alumni Associ-ation database for future mailings. Once a year, in the fall, the alumni association mails a newsletter to all alumni whose current address we have on file, as well as the annual dues notice. Our newsletter “KnighTimes” is published three times a year and sent to dues-paying members. We also maintain an office where we can provide classes with information about their classmates and help with reunions. The office displays alumni items for sale and maintains our website. It is important to support your alumni association with your dues, as this money is the sole sup-port of maintaining this office, producing the newsletter and supporting the All-School Reunion. All money given for scholarships and memorials is earmarked for the foundation and providing scholar-ships. With events unfolding for the All-School Reunion next year you will not want to miss an issue of the newsletter that will keep you informed of dates, plac-es and times. Use the enclosed envelope to send your dues or monetary gifts or go on line at: www.torontoohioalumni.com and pay using a credit card or PayPal.

Information for the Fall Newsletter was re-ceived prior to August 9, 2013. News from alumni, deaths, donations, memorials and life members received after that date will appear in the Winter 2013 newsletter.

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The following article is about those students who received scholarships from the Alumni Association. These scholarships total $15,000. The arti-cle does not list the hundreds of other scholarships that are given by various groups, colleges, etc. That information can be found on the Toronto City Schools website or by contacting the Toronto City Schools. This is an alumni newsletter and the article is about those receiving the alumni awards.

The Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to Toronto High School seniors since 1990. For a complete listing go to our website at: www.torontoohioalumni.com. This year, 23 awards were presented bringing the total of students assisted during those years to 358 and the total amount distributed to $247,400. These scholarships are made possible because of donations from alumni and friends. We have created an endowed scholarship foundation with a tax exempt status that enables us to grant these scholarships using the interest from our investments. Two of the scholarships are four year awards and ten of the scholarships were created by donations from individuals or their families. All award winners are selected through an anonymous scoring appli-cation in compliance with the IRS standards.

Open House Gala The Toronto Board of Education will host an open house of the new Jr/Sr High School on Sunday, September 29th from 2 to 5 pm. Guests will be able to tour the beautiful new facility which opens to Toronto students for the 2013-2014 school year on September 3rd.

“The rich traditions of the past such as the legacy of class pictures (classes from 1924 to 2013) to the promising future, featuring the latest in technology, will be highlighted,” according to Fred Burns, district superintendent. Burns adds, “What makes Toronto Schools special? It is the base of unity and coopera-tion it has developed with the city and with many groups and organizations. It is the honesty and sincerity of the board members and administration and, most importantly, it is the support of the over 5000 alumni who mentor and give their financial support.”

The $19 million, 84,000 square foot structure will house grades 6 through 12 and is situated on Dennis Way next to Karaffa Elementary School.

The building is completely “wi-fied” with several computer labs, desktop and laptop computers and a media center. It will be a completely energy-efficient building with room for expansion and growth.

Mark your calendars. The exact agenda for the day was not available at press time, but special presentations are being prepared.

Editor’s Note: As one who has toured the building during the construction, I can only relay the pride I feel that this school building

is one of the premier school buildings in the state. I was amazed at the classroom size and the “smart” lights that turn on as you

enter the classroom, windows are everywhere letting in the natural light, the well designed media room (library), wide hallways,

state of the art cafeteria, large locker rooms leading directly into the gymnasium, weight room and the security that has been care-

fully thought out to secure our children from outside threats. More details and pictures will appear in the December edition of the

KnighTimes.

Re-U-Knighting all Alumni 2014—“125 years of Excellence”

Labor Day weekend (August 28-29-30-31) is the date for the 2014 All-School Reunion. Many classes are already

starting to plan reunions. Jay Foster, 2000, will be chairman of the event. While plans will be finalized in the next few

months, a tentative outline is being listed at this time to help alumni make plans for the weekend. A listing of lodging

will also be included in the invitation that will be mailed in March of 2014.

Things will kick off with a “Welcome Alumni” party on Thursday evening in the Gazebo area (Market and Third

Streets) with music and dancing in the streets, refreshments available for purchase. On Friday a golf scramble will be

arranged at Dyer Country Club and a tailgate reception for the Distinguished Alumni, Life Members and financial con-

tributors (by invitation only) will be held at the stadium prior to the high school football game. Look for an announce-

ment later about the alumni band. Saturday will see tours of the new Jr/Sr High School and then a dinner and program,

at the school, to recognize our Distinguished Alumni and a special picture presentation. Following the dinner, mixer

locations will be announced. Sunday is being left open for churches who may want to hold special events and classes

planning separate reunions.

During the weekend, the Festival of the Arts, sponsored by the Focus in Toronto group, will be held as well as local merchant events and tours of the Main Street Museum.

Applications for the Distinguished Alumni Award can be found on page 7 and must be submitted no later than March 31, 2014.

Make your plans now to re-u-knight with fellow alumni from August 28th thru August 31st.

Toronto High School Marching Band Nominated for 2014 Nation-al Memorial Day Parade

The Toronto High School Marching Band has been nominated to represent the state of Ohio in the 2014 National Me-morial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. on Monday, May 26, 2014. This nomina-tion came from a personal recommenda-tion from United States Congressman, Bill Johnson.

The Toronto City School District consid-ers this nomination a great honor for the band program and the city of Toronto and are currently working to make this trip to Washington, D.C. a reality. The band will travel to Washington on Friday, May 23, 2014 and return after the pa-rade. While in Washington, the students will watch performances of the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the National Symphony Orchestra along with visiting many of the monuments and museums. The band will also participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

As this is a great honor for the band, it is also very expensive. All alumni, especial-ly those who participated in band and friends of the Toronto High School Marching Band are encouraged to join our efforts in raising funds for this trip. Any amount will help us to represent the city of Toronto, the state of Ohio and the Toronto City School District in this na-tional tribute to the United States Mili-tary and Veterans. Your tax-deductible donation to the Toronto High School Band trip fund can be mailed to the To-ronto Band Parents, P.O. Box 22, Toron-to, OH 43964. Please make checks paya-ble to Toronto Band Parents. An insert in your KnighTimes newsletter also lets you support the band by purchasing a raffle ticket for a 2014 Ford Focus or cash (drawing to be held on May 17, 2014).

Mr. Kirk George is the band director, Sally George is assistant director and Jennifer Stovarsky Matyas ‘89 is flag corps director.
