Ernest William Willoughby enlisted 2nd September 1914, in Brisbane, Queensland. 11th

August 1915 he is shown as wounded in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula, 9th August

1916 with the 4th Divisional Artillery Column in France, 20th April 1918 awarded the

Military medal, October 1918 shown as returned from Italy to Australia. 3rd February

1919 he is discharged.

The citation for his Military medal reads:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on our position

opposite DERNACOURT and ALBERT on the 5th April 1918. Whilst the Battery was

under heavy shell fire and his No.1 had been killed, this gunner took over the duties

of No.1 of his sub-section without any hesitation, and did his work splendidly. He

showed absolute disregard for his personal safety and set a fine example to the other

gunners by his prompt acceptance of the responsibilities of a No.1 in action. His action

helped the Battery over a critical period when it was suffering casualties and the utmost

support was required for the infantry’. $1500 to $1700

3. British War Medal & 9ct gold watch fob as awarded to William Brophey, who served

with the 30th Battalion A.I.F. during the First World War. BWM is impressed named to

4736 DVR. W. BROPHEY. 30-BN. A.I.F. Gold fob is marked 9c to rear and shows a

soldier on rising sun badge, adorned by a wreath and scroll ‘HE ANSWERED HIS

COUNTRY’S CALL’. $150 - $200.

4. Single issue Victory Medal to Charles Willmore B.R.C & ST. J. J. who worked on board

the hospital ship Western Australia. He served on the ship from 20th June 1916 and

this was his sole issue. $80 to $120

5. 23rd Battalion Australian Imperial Forces trio. Includes 1914/15 Star, impressed named

to 2607 PTE W. CROFT. 23/BN. A.I.F., British War & Victory Medal, impressed named

6. WW2 Japanese Meatball flag, with signatures. White cotton base with printed red

‘sun’, with ties. Measures 67cm x 72cm. $100 to $120

7. Uniform group to Captain Charles Foulkes-Taylor M.C., late 10th Light Horse. Group

consist of jacket and pants, as worn by Foulkes-Taylor during the Second World War

and a spare jacket. The primary jacket is a large sized jacket, with Captain’s rank pips

to shoulder boards, rising suns to collars, Military cross and trio ribbon bar to left pocket

and patched for the H.Q.W.A.L. of C Base Units, with small 10th Light Horse patches,

showing his First World War service. Tailor tag for Buckley Munn Ltd Melbourne,

named and rank as Lt., regimental number 9882. Pants similarly marked/tailored.

Spare jacket retains buttons but no extra insignia, tailored tagged for Edward Bevvy

ltd Perth, not named but same large size and both direct from the family.

Foulkes-Taylor was a legend within the 10th light Horse, being born London 14 March

1890, emigrating to Western Australia prior to the outbreak of the First World War.

Enlisted into the 10th Light Horse, 10th reinforcements, 5th August 1915, serving

previously for 11 months as a Lance Corporal with the 25th Light Horse in Northam.

Wounded 2nd October 1916, Commissioned in the field, 9th March 1918, wounded

again 1st October 1918 and winning the Military Cross (London Gazette – 9th March

1918), the citation reading:

''For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He led his troops for a

distance of 2 miles, capturing a number of prisoners, motor and mule-drawn transport.

He personally shot five of the enemy who tried to resist. It was owing to his dash and

good leadership that two roads were so quickly seized and held.''

In a recent Western Australian Newspaper article (2011), he is shown to have been added to his legendary status for one particular incident: Lt Charles Foulkes-Taylor, who had led the advance through Damascus, posted guards around the village. Foulkes-Taylor observed an Arab on a horse, galloping across the fields towards the Homs road. He later wrote in a letter to Lt-Gen Harry Chauvel: “We saw an Arab in gorgeous dress galloping towards us on a grey animal and another Arab just behind him, also on an Arab. On seeing us, he turned and tried to rejoin his folk (the Turks), his groom got away but I was able to get within 20 yards of him and called on him to halt in Arabic and Australian. I shot him and caught his mount, a beautiful Arab mare and rode her for the next day or so and decided to make every endeavour to bring her out to Australia.” $800 to $1000

stamped to 43cm long blade. A7078 to pommel. Scabbard has the dark brown

9. Australian WW2 leather flying helmet, with all zips and buckles present. Lasicas

Australia 1942 tagged. Ink numbered 441374 to interior of chamois lining. Number

relates to Flight Sergeant Robert Hanway Wells, enlisted RAAF 24th July 1943 and

10. Boer War Queen’s South Africa Medal, four campaign clasps CAPE COLONY ,

ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL & SOUTH AFRICA 1902 impressed named

to 3429 PTE T. P. BEDFORD. SCOTS GUARDS.

Thomas P. Bedford was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He attested for the Scots

Guards at Liverpool in June 1900 and served in South Africa, January-October 1902.

Promoted L/Cpl 22nd January 1901, demoted by order of the Commanding Officer

14th May 1901. He paid 18 pounds to be discharged on the 22nd December 1902,

after only 2 years and 197 days’ service. $230 to $300

with green enamelled points. Central Vietnamese inscription. With full neck ribbon.

Gilt finish to reverse. The award was the highest honour that could be bestowed

17. First World War Australian 5 pocket leather ammunition bandolier. Maker stamped

H. Bonner. Brisbane and dated 1915. $200 to $250

18. First World War Prussian enlisted spiked helmet. Leather body and peaks in very

good condition with 1915-16 grey washed metal helmet plate, buckles rear spine

with ventilator and removeable spike with grenade striker base. National cockade is

retained to right side. Unit painted to leather interior Fs.A.R.9. 1891 / II. B. 1893/ 8.

C. III. Extra holes to rear for refitting plate. Leather liner very good and complete. A

Medals include Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, TRANSVAAL & SOUTH

AFRICA 1901; impressed named to LIEUT. J. DRURY, 7/N. Z’LAND M.R.; British

War Medal 1914-20 impressed named to LIEUT. J. W. DRURY, A.I.F..

James Willoughby Drury was born in Plymouth, Devon in April 1878, from whence

he made his way to New Zealand and found work as a printer in Auckland. He

attested for the 7th N.Z. Contingent and, having been commissioned Lieutenant, was

embarked in the S.S. Gulf of Taranto in April 1901. Brief service in the Transvaal

ensued but he was invalided home in November of the same year - according to

Drury on account of an injury to his knee caused by a ricochet bullet but his C.O.

begged to differ when a claim for compensation was made by Drury around 1902.

In November 1915, he attested for the Australian Expeditionary Force at Brisbane,

and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on the home establishment. In June 1917,

however, he was embarked for England, where he served in the 41st Battalion until

the year’s end. He was discharged as a consequence of an injury to a foot caused

by a machine-gun tripod; sold with copied research and roll confirmation.

Arthur John Richardson was born 30th April 1918 in Donnybrook, Western Australia.

He enlisted on the 24th October 1924 in Subiaco. Allotted to the 2/11th Infantry

Battalion. Several military offences en route to Middle East. Embarked for Greece

10th April 1941. Reported Missing in Action 4th June 1941. Shown as wounded in

action, G.S,.W. left knee and confirmed captured 5th September 1941. Prisoner in

Stalag 18a (Wolfsberg), repatriated from P.O.W. Camp 1st June 1945. Promoted

Corporal 10th April 1946. Discharged 8th November 1945. In his repatriation form

Richardson escaped from German captivity on the 10th August 1941, only to be

recaptured by the Italians on the 6th November 1941 and claims to have been shot

through the chest by an Italian Sentry and treated as a result in hospital.

33. WW1 Trio to an Australian Officer, Bertie Henry Buck who served in the Royal

Naval Reserve. Period swing mounted medals include 1914/15 Star, impressed

named to S. LT. B. H. BUCK, R.N.R., War & Victory medals, impressed named to S.

Buck gained these medals as a Sub Lieutenant aboard the Sea Plane Carrier H.M.S.

Anne, which was a converted captured German freighter Aene Rickmers. H.M.S.

Anne carried out observation duties with her two aircraft in the Eastern

Mediterranean and Red Sea during 1915 – 17. The ship and her aircraft supported

Allied operations in Syria, Palestine and the Sinai Peninsula. Aside from

reconnaissance duties, they delivered and recovered Allied agents as well as

observed for ships performing coastal bombardments. She also sent her planes on

reconnaissance missions to areas of Palestine, in support of Allied movements,

including Beersheba and supported the Arab Revolt led by Lawrence of Arabia in

1917.

Bertie Henry Buck’s obituary best explains his post war life, which ended on the 8th

of January 1952.

Captain Bertie Henry Buck, who died suddenly at Port Lincoln last Friday afternoon, was one of thebest known seamen in South Australian waters. Born on Kangaroo Island in 1883,he spent more than 47 years at sea. He was with the Adelaide Steamship Company for 30 years, 23 of which he served as master. His first command was the Kapara, which he took over in February, 1925. Since then he has been in command of the Quorna, Nalpa, Mulcra, Noora, Coroma, Lameroo, Broadway, Moontaand Minnipa. Captain Buck retired from the company's service in October, 1949, but occasionally returned to duty in an emergency. For the past four months, he had been serving with Captain R. A. Moore as watchman on the damaged freighter Arkaba, anchored in Boston Bay. His funeral was held last Monday afternoon at the Cheltenham Cemetery. His remains were taken to Port Adelaide by the Moonta on Friday evening. $600 to $750

served with ‘C’ Company of the 38th Battalion, A.I.F. He was Killed In Action on the

28th August 1918 and is buried at Hem Farm Military Cemetery France. The Battalion

PTE. J. PICKLES. S. LAN. R. 3rd Aircraft Mechanic C. Tranter enlisted R.A.M.C. and

served Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 19th July 1915, transferred to Royal

Flying Corps. Temporary Corporal James Pickles served as part of the regiment’s

Territorial Force 2/4th South Lancashire Regiment. The 2/4th landed at Bolougne,

50. First World War Death Plaque for 5874 Rifleman David Anthony Frier, 9th

Battalion (Queen Victoria’s Rifles), who was Killed in Action on the 12th July 1916

(only 8 days after arriving in France). Remembered with honour Foncquevilliers

Cemetery. The 9th were in action in the famous Somme Offensive and lost 221 men

54. Medal Pair Casualty to Able Seaman Charles John Campbell, who died 10th July

1917, while serving aboard S.S. Garmoyle. British War Medal & Mercantile Marine

Medal, impressed named: CHARLES J. CAMPBELL, in box of issue. S.S. Garmoyle

was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 14 nautical miles (26 km) south east

of Mine Head, County Cork, by SM U-57 with the loss of twenty crew. U-57 Sank 57

vessels during her 7 mission career during WW1. Direct from family. $150 - $200

Bowyer Frederick was a Warrant Officer Observer who was serving in India with 113

Squadron RAF. He is listed as ‘accidentally killed’ on 11th October 1942. With the

attack by the Japanese forces from Burma into India at this time was of such

shocking magnitude that many of the ‘accidentally killed’ casualties were in fact

suicides. This was confirmed by the family whose medals these came from and sold

hamburg, Saarbrucken, Dusseldorf, Osnabruck, Nyborg (mining), Mainz, Heligoland,

Flying Officer Leslie Victor Dredge of Melbourne, Australia, enlisted into the R.A.A.F.

on 28th March 1941 and flew in 67, 12, 170 and 46 Sqns. He was injured when his

plane caught fire on 24 Nov 1942, but was still able to fly throughout 1943 and fly

Bomber Command Lancaster missions in 1944. most of 1945 was spent in Stirlings

in the Far & Middle East and during the 1950s employed transporting VIPs.

118. WW2 Royal Australian Air Force ‘Prisoner of War’ medal group, as awarded to

Sergeant Albert William Omond, who was taken prisoner by the Japanese and

worked on the notorious Thai Burma Railway. Medal group includes the following,

swing mounted as worn: 1939-45 Star, The Pacific Star, War Medal & Australian

Service Medal 1939-45. All are named in impressed capitals to: 16273 A. W.

OMOND. He came from Norseman, was born in 1915 and enlisted 24th April 1940.

He trained as an Aircraft fitter, worked at Pearce and was taken prisoner at

Palembang, Java in 1942. He would have been captured, along with most of 1st

Squadron, who were decimated as a result of captured, wounded and killed as a

result of the Japanese invasion of Java. He served in P.O.W. work camps -

Moulmein & Camp Thai and was liberated in Thailand in 1945. Brought back to Perth

in October 1945. He was discharged on the 30th April 1946. $1500 to $1600

Arthur Bulgin, who served with the 1st Armoured Regiment. The jacket is the

standard type, dated 1943, Size 71 and hand written with service number, but has

been cut down and converted to a Battle Dress Blouse, as was the custom fashion

towards the end of the war. 1st Armoured Regiment patches to arms, standard

badges and buttons and applied waist belt. Has a field bandage in left pocket and

pistol lanyard. Pants are dated 1943. Both pants and jacket are in very good

condition. The 1st Armoured Regiment (as patched on this uniform) was in use from

James Henry Sherar was born in 1883 in Fitzroy, Victoria and was part of the 5th

Contingent of the Victorian Mounted Rifles, leaving for South Africa 15th February

1901 and returning 25th April 1902. He enlisted in Perth for the First World War on

the 8th May 1915 and was allotted to the 7th Reinforcements of the 16th Battalion.

Wounded 26th August 1915 Gallipoli, promoted Lance Corporal 2nd August 1915,

Corporal 25th May 1916, to N0. 4 Depot, discharged Perth 25th October 1917.

128. First World War era Naval Midshipman's dirk/sidearm. The dirk features a gilded brass lion head and ornate back strap, with portepee ring and acorn quillon. The pebbled ray skin grip is typically in very good condition, with the wire wrap present to finger grooves. The front langet is adorned with the naval anchor and wreath. The push button lock is present and is in working condition. The 47cm long unmarked blade features on both sides the acid etched design of laurel spray and ships anchor with the Royal Cypher of King George V. The etching runs 4/5 of the length of the blade. The overall condition is very fine, with only very small amounts of wear, one of the better I have come across. With no maker's or retailer's name to the ricasso, this is almost certainly a 1916 to 1918 made piece. The scabbard is also in fine condition with an all black leather frame with the ornate brass upper chape with twin floating suspension rings and large style drag. No movement or repair to the scabbard. The scabbard and dirk fit together with no issues, just the way it was designed and made nearly 100 years ago. Overall a very fine piece that has been very well looked after. Overall length: 62 cm. $700 to $800

Jacket features the standard black wool base, with double breasted set of domed

R.N. Admiral’s rank buttons, Rear Admirals rank tape to both sleeves. The left breast

shows ribbon bars for the following awards, Order of the Bath, Companion to the

Order of the British Empire, 1914/15 Star, BWM, Victory, 1939-45 Star, Atlantic,

Africa & Burma Stars, all with rosettes, Italy Star, Defence & War Medal, with

Mention in Dispatches oakleaf, George VI Coronation, French Legion of Honour and

French Croix De Guerre. Gieves tailor label, named to E. W. Longley Cook, dated

1946. Good silken interior, with usual wear to cloth. Matching pants, unmarked.

Longley-Cook joined the Royal Navy as a cadet at the Royal Naval College,

Dartmouth and was mobilised at the start of the First World War. He saw action in

the battleship HMS Prince of Wales in the British Adriatic Squadron. He served in the

Second World War as commanding officer of the cruiser HMS Caradoc from July

1939, as Deputy Director of Training and Staff Duties from October 1940 and as

Deputy Director of Gunnery and Anti-Aircraft Warfare from July 1941. He went on to

be commanding officer of the cruiser HMS Argonaut from April 1942, Captain of the

Fleet for the Mediterranean Fleet in January 1943 and Captain of the Fleet for the

East Indies Fleet in January 1945. After the war he became Chief of Staff for the

Home Fleet in November 1946 and Director of Naval Intelligence in May 1948. In

that capacity he warned the British Government that the United States "was set to

bomb Russia first" and that "all-out war against the Soviet Union was not only

inevitable but imminent". $500 to $600

enlisted for service in the 2nd Australian Imperial Forces 30th April 1940. Promoted

through ranks to Lieutenant – A.A.P.C. Died of illness whilst in service 26th

131. Edwardian Royal Army Medical Corps Attributed Officer’s Sword. A rare Edwardian levée weight example by E.J. Jones, King St., St. James’s London. Narrow dumbbell blade deeply etched with foliate decoration, EVIIR cypher, Corps badge and motto ‘In Arduis Fidelis’, and owner’s initials M.F.F. Hilt with gilt-brass Gothic guard with royal cypher in the cartouche and wire-bound shagreen grip. Housed in its steel scabbard. Some pitting to blade, one grip-wire loose, some discolouration to scabbard. Attributed to Major Mathias Frederick Foulds, Lieut. Apr. 1901, 1908 attained rank of Captain, serving in Bengal and at the outbreak of the Great War he held the rank of Major and was serving at St. Helena, most likely responsible for the medical & health services within the St Helena Volunteer Corps. The tiny island saw 56 deaths due to wartime service during the First World War.

style non removeable spike and base with officer’s pearling. Interior shows

David Flowers served in the 40th Judean Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. The 40th

Bn was part of what became known as the 'Jewish Legion' and was formed at

Plymouth in late January 1918 from Jewish volunteers, with ninety-two Ottoman

Jews who had been captured in the fighting earlier were also permitted to enlist in

the 40th. They served in Egypt fighting the Ottoman Turks from June in the Jordan

Valley, north of Jerusalem, under the command of Major General Edward Chaytor,

who also commanded the Anzac Mounted forces. Almost all the members of the

Jewish regiments were discharged immediately after the end of World War I in

November 1918. Some of them returned to their respective countries, others settled

in Palestine to realize their Zionist aspirations. $50 to $70

James Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1920, and served with the Royal Army

Service Corps in Palestine before transferring to the Corps of Military Police. Whilst

on point duty at Port St. Venere, Messina, on 8 September 1943, he was wounded in

the leg. Having had his wound dressed he returned to duty, but was wounded again

in the neck, and was killed when he was hit for a third time that day whilst having his

second wound dressed. He is buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy. $280 to $360

marked to Carl Eickhorn Solingen with the RAD diamond and Ges Gesch stamp.

Blade measures 24.5cm, good motto – Arbeit Adelt (Work Ennobles). Stag horn

grips are in very good condition. The steel scabbard has been repainted but is dent

free and the nickel plated fittings are in good condition. $400 to 500.

260. WW2 German Afrika Korps tunic. Light weight cotton base, with 5 central domed pebbled button front, with two chest and 2 bellows pockets, the right breast retaining the ‘bevo’ woven eagle, with faded cotton litzen to collars. Afrika Korps theatre of operations cuff title to right sleeve cuff. Retains one shoulder board for Oberfeldwebel (Sergeant Major), the other having been removed. This was part of the personal effects of QX5634 Sergeant Horton Ford McLachlan D.C.M., 2/15 Battalion 2nd A.I.F. Sergeant McLachlan who won the D.C.M. for famously killing 11 Germans with the use of bayonet, mills bomb and sub machine gun (used as a club), and responsible for the elimination of a number of machine gun posts and a further 4 enemy during ‘Operation Bulimba’ in September 1942. We sold his medal group and personal effects in 2015 and this was a left over jacket from that group.

271. An exceptionally rare WW2 German parade bayonet, with scabbard & leather frog as worn by a member of the SS Panzer Corps. Carl Eikhorn maker marked to blade, for this exceptionally rare bayonet, which was originally purchased through a veteran in the US State of Missouri and was the first bayonet of it's type to be seen by Johnson reference Books & Militaria. The bayonet features all nickel fittings, showing very light surface wear. Obverse of pommel is engraved with the ultra-rare 'Panzertruppe' motif as pictured in the Eickhorn kundendienst. This pattern's motif

features a death's head surmounted by a Panzer with panzer Commander holding aloft a signal flag. The flag in kundendienst is devoid of any decoration, however the flag and bayonet has been personalised to include SS runes. The upper hilt spine is professionally engraved with the serial number 'SS 314731'. The black bakelite grip plates are perfect with no cracks or chips. The short plated blade measuring 20cm long is in excellent condition, with only light in and out runner marks. Dent free scabbard retains approx. 85% of the original black enamel finish, with the scabbard throat being correspondingly stamped '314731'. The bayonet is complete with its black leather frog, which is stamped to the reverse 'SS 1/35 RZM'. The frog has a small tear through the frog recess. As the original paperwork states, this is a unique opportunity to obtain a one of a kind personalised SS bayonet with an ultra rare Panzer troop pommel.

This super rare piece was originally bought from Johnson's Militaria in 1999 for $2700.00 U.S.D. as a one off piece, as per the accompanying paperwork.

274. Early 1930's SA (Brownshirts) uniform Kepi for an enlisted man. The Kepi

retains the original tan cotton body, with light green inner band for the Thuringia

district. There is mothing to sections (as pictured) however the band is sound and

solid. The early party eagle is present, as is the brass coloured domed button to

centre of adjoining flaps. The thick dark brown leather sweatband is affixed with two

chocolate steel buttons. The peak shows good shaping from service wear. The

interior shows the original dark tan leather sweatband and RZM tag. Faint owners

name can be seen in liner. Approx. size 55. Good shape to this well used early SA

man's Kepi.

293. WW2 German Navy U-boat badge, mid war piece made by Rudolf Souval of

Vienna. Very good condition used badge, shows well detailed oval wreath and

crossed bow, encompassing, the national eagle and swastika. The U-boat is well

detailed with propeller, fin and rudder along with stylised line to port side, along with

flag, deck gun and conning tower. The rear of the badge shows the correct thin

needle pin and latch and the makers mark. The badge shows mid war gilt wash to

the front only. Very good example overall. $500 to $600

294. Luftwaffe Honour Goblet, awarded to airmen and officers of the German Air Force during WW2 for gallantry in combat and was an award made for heroism which fell short of being awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, which was Germany’s highest combat award.

The goblet measures 203mm in height and the lip is a diameter of about 100mm.

There is a heavy original patina overall, showing this to be a totally uncleaned

example, fresh from the estate. This Honour Goblet depicts on one side an eagle

attacking another bird which is upside down in the air. The symbolism here of course

reflects the dangers of the air fighter pilot. The opposite side of the goblet depicts the

raised out Iron Cross having fine serrations, raised swastika in the centre and the

date, “1939” on the bottom leg. At the lower neck portion of the goblet above the

flared stand are double rows of oak leaves with acorns. The detail is outstanding

throughout these leaves.

Around the lower rim, beneath the oak leaves, is the name and date of the recipient,

“OBERLEUTNANT FREIDRICH HOFLING AM 2.10.42”. Raised out around the

lower rim is the purpose of the award, “FÜR BESONDERE LEISTUNG IM

LUFTKRIEG”. This of course translates to “Outstanding Performance in the Air War”.

The lower inside portion of this goblet is stamped, “Feinsilber / Alpaca / Auflage” and

beneath is the maker name, “Joh. Wagner & Sohn”.

Patzwall has Oberleutnant Hofling as receiving his goblet on the 5th of October 1942

as an observer whilst flying with the 5th Staffel Aufklarungsgruppe and was

subsequently award the German Cross in Gold on the 12th of July 1943. These

pieces are exceptionally rare, very few were ever awarded given that many were

posthumous awards. What a great exciting piece this would make added to the shelf

where you house other Luftwaffe memorabilia. Extremely decorative and a most

important looking war trophy. $5000 to $5300

the inscription reads "Fackelstaffel-Lauf Olympia-Berlin 1936", with Olympic rings

silver Octagonal table salver/plate by Bruckmann & Sohne. The plate features the

formal NSDAP eagle and A.H. monogram to centre, with engraved chain octagonal

border, within the 34cm/13.3 inch wide border edge. The Bruckmann maker stamp

and silver content (.800) stamps are shown to the underside of of the 6 O'clock edge.

This is the formal pattern, as used by Hitler personally, not being the more common

office variety silverware as often comes up for sale. This was sold in October 2007

by Dreweatt Neate Auctioneers as part of the Stenson Militaria Collection. This is an

long black leather coat was purchased by the vendor in New Zealand in 1969. The

coat was purchased from the daughter of the Dutch resistance fighter who killed the

Gestapo officer and took his leather coat and uniform, burning the uniform at the end

of the war and bringing the coat upon emigration to New Zealand. Upon inspection of

the jacket it has all the hallmarks of a WW2 made piece, zig zag collar, heavy

polished points and you can even see the shine outline from where the pistol holster

was worn on the left hip. The vendor has had this in his collection now for 47 years

and is an established WA collector and will be in the auction room to take questions

before the sale for any prospective bidders.

334. WW2 German Late war 'Normandy' patterned Model 1942 Luftwaffe camouflage steel helmet. This helmet retains the majority of the original 1944 era 'Normandy' pattern camouflage, showing some light wear overall, with some minor scratches. This helmet has had the grease and sand added to the paint mixture, giving this a lightly rough texture overall. The 2nd pattern Luftwaffe decal is still 90% present, showing through the thickly added camouflage paint. The liner is present, showing light wear and good head shape, with a period overstitch to rear centre seam. The rear skirt shows CKL 64 820 stamped (manufacturer: Eisenhuttenwerk AG, Thale Harz, sized 64). Not often do you see these Luftwaffe camouflage helmets, often these were worn by the Flak gunners or by the newly formed members of the Hermann Goering Division, in either an infantry or panzer role.

Single 4 branch rank board Award loops to left pocket and Blood Order ribbon to right pocket, indicating the wearer marched in 1923 with Adolf Hitler in Munich in what became known as the Beer Hall Putsch. WX11278 Ernest James Nyal, who served with the 2/32nd Battalion. Medal group

includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star with 8th Army Bar, Defence Medal, War Medal,

ASM 1939-45 & Tobruk Siege Medal, all named to WX11278 E. J. NYAL. Comes

with a large amount of ephemera, including unique sweet hearts, photos and other

items associated.

Ernest James Nyal enlisted in Dowerin, Western Australia on the 5th April 1941.

Listed as ‘Missing In Action’ 31ST October 1942. Reported P.O.W. in Stalag IV D

(Torgau, Saxony) December 1943. Repatriated back to Australia 17th June 1945.

Discharged 22nd August 1945. Private Nyal was captured, along with 200 other

members of the 2/32nd Bn between the 17th and 19th July during the attack on

Trig22, which saw at least half of the remaining members killed or wounded as a

403. World War I Presentation British Naval Officer's Sword to a Battle of Jutland

Naval Officer.

Regulation form in superb overall condition. 31 1/2" straight blade etched for half its

length with scrollwork and crown over fouled anchor on obverse. Large six pointed

star on obverse ricasso with small brass "Proved" disc inset. Reverse etching with

scrollwork, British coat of arms and 2" from the ricasso, which bears the etched

maker's name "A H / HASTINGS / HIGH St / CHATHAM" is an etched panel bearing

the following inscription; "PRESENTED TO Mr A. J. PERSAC R. N. / BY THE SHIPS

COMPANY / H. M. S. / FAULKNOR / MAY 1916" *(AJ Persac was the commanding

officer of the ship and received the DSC for his leadership during the Jutland and

Ostend raids during WW1). Blade overall about mint. Regulation style hilt with heavy

brass 'cup' guard displaying crown over anchor in deep relief, with stippled

background and sword knot slot near where it enters the pommel. Lion head pommel

with backstrap cast in deep relief representation of fur. Interestingly the sword

utilizes a ball capstan. Guard also about perfect retaining traces of the original gilt

just showing some minor honest wear. White sharkskin grip with brass wire wrap

also about perfect. Small folding courterguard with piercing that matches stud on the

reverse of the top scabbard mount. Sword retains the original leather washer.

Regulation scabbard, the brass mounts with incised line decoration on both sides

and brass carrying rings, about perfect. The sword bears the registration number

6949 in the back of the blade.

The H.M.S. Faulknor was a British destroyer purchased by the British Navy while

she was still under construction, having been ordered by the Chilean Navy in 1912.

She was named for the nineteenth century Faulknor family of British Naval officers.

The Faulknor served on "Dover Patrol" throughout WW I and participated in the

Battle of Jutland and both the 1st and 2nd Ostend Raids in the Spring of 1918. In

1920 the Faulknor was returned to the Chilean Navy where she served until 1933.

408. Original aluminium alloy eagle, measuring 60 x 35cm (24 x 14 inches), well framed and with all mounting posts intact, well marked with manufacturers stamps on rear. These were mounted on all German rolling stock during the Third Reich and were popular trophies for allied troops. $1300 to $1500

409. An exceptionally interesting medal and document group, offered for the very

first time, belonging to the only British Officer who served with the US Forces in the

Vietnam War. Most importantly, this group relates to Thomas Abraham, who wrote a

book called 'The Cage', in which he stated he was a prisoner of the Vietcong - a

story which was later proven to be untrue.

The group consists of Abraham's 11 service medals, 4 being named, his miniatures

awards, ribbon bar, unit patches & insignia in a wooden display case, as pictured.

The awards are all complete with their respective award certificates, held in a folder,

along with his Reserve Commission and other items of paperwork, including his

course certificates and honourable discharge. The folio also contains large colour

photographs, as well as his Silver & Bronze Stars combat report/criteria awards

paperwork and confirmation of Purple Heart, Air Medal & Vietnam Cross of

Gallantry. There is also a 2 part folio of black & white and colour photographs on

campaign (approx. 50) as well as a copy of his book 'The Cage' - Transworld

Publishers, 2002. Included also are the supposed secret letters, written in ink &

lemon juice, detailing his captivity and torture ordeal. And last, but not least, a steel

wire which he famously claimed was used to bind his wrists while in captivity. Tom

Abraham on the face of it would seem to be a very heroic soldier, who was captured

in 1968 during the crazy days of the Tet Offensive, however, the murky truth has

since emerged that he was not actually ever captured and made up the whole story

as a result of an incident where he was arrested by the Surrey police for drink driving

and assault, in which he hit both police officer's in 1999. On the day of his trial, he

gave the story in court that as a result of post traumatic events relating to his

capture, imprisonment and torture by the Vietcong, he was therefore not responsible

for his actions. At the court house was a reporter to took down the details of the story

and its intriguing nature and passed these details onto The Daily Mail, who

subsequently contacted Abraham and offered him an undisclosed sum to publish his

story, which led to him also writing his book. According to Abraham, he was captured

in 1968 during the Tet offensive, while serving as a junior officer with the 7th Air

Cavalry Brigade. He claims he was taken by the Vietcong to a remote area, caged in

bamboo, submerged underwater for short periods, tortured with cigarette burns and

physical abuse. He managed to escape from his captors and made his way back to

safety...however, he failed to notify anyone at the time, including his wife, of his

capture or escape. As a result, his book and story has been widely criticised and he

was taken to court as a result by The Daily Mail. The group was bought as a result of

him having to raise funds for his legal defence team and is for the first time ever

available to purchase on the open market. There are many stories relating to

Abraham which can be found on the internet, and also some unbelievable ones

contained in his book.

As mentioned, this is one of the strangest and interesting groups to have surfaced

and any prospective buyer would have this as a unique group within their collection.

413. 1912 British Army Cavalry Officer's presentation sword, as worn by Lt. Colonel

Ernest Frederick Browning MC, who served in France during the First World War,

being awarded the Military Cross. 1912 Pattern Attributed West Somerset Yeomanry

Officer’s Cavalry Sword. This sword is attributed to Major Ernest Frederick Browning

MC. An unusual example with plain straight thin single edged blade, this with faint

engraved name “E.F. Browning MC Major”. Plated bowl guard with scroll foliage

decoration and the unusual feature of a small pierced panel. Heavy stepped

pommel, surmounting a shagreen covered grip with leather knot. Housed in polished

brown leather field service scabbard. Overall good condition, with some minor age

wear to guard and blade. Overall length: 108cm. Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Frederick

Browning MC landed in France with the West Somerset Yeomanry on the 4th March

416. A French XIII Curassier’s Broadsword, by Klingenthal, 1816, being the first issue immediately after the Battle of Waterloo. The sword features the domed brass pommel, thick leather grip and 3 branched brass guard, showing inspection/acceptance stamps overall. Dated March 1916 with maker to spin of the 96cm long blade, which is in excellent condition. Scabbard shows wear and pitting, but commensurate with age. 420. A mid 19th century Scottish 42nd Highlanders Major’s doublet/jacket. Red fine

wool base, with 7 domed gilt ‘42’ numbered officer’s buttons to front, the bottom

button has been removed, most likely to allow the service belt to be worn. Officer’s

twist rank boards, with Queen’s Crown to each, with numbered fastening buttons

(dull). Gilt lace to collar, with 3 sets of buttons to each of the front apron flaps. Small

1cm tear to left breast bone area, but can be mended. Black /gilt lace cuffs and

buttons. Similar skirt/officer button configuration to rear. Good interior, with light

mothing to calf skin interior. This would date from the Crimean War and as such is a

well preserved piece. $600 to $800

Henry Edward Hunt, Late 2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Killed in

plaque has been cross referenced with the award roll showing this to be correct

Awards of the 'British Land Forces', showing Napier was also entitled to the Turkish

Sultan's Gold Medal (not included). This medal is officially noted on the roll as a

duplicate 'made up', which would have been a period replacement for his original.

Nonetheless, this is a rare medal to a historical figure in the British Army.

Claude Houston Stuart-French, born March 1867, the third son of Major-General

William James Stuart and Eleanor French; educated at Sherborne School, the King's

School, Rochester, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; Commissioned

Second Lieutenant, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, February 1887; promoted Lieutenant,

January 1889; appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Governor and Commander in Chief of

Western Australia, February 1891; transferred as Captain, 5th Dragoon Guards,

October 1896; served during the Second Boer War, and took part in the Relief of

Ladysmith, including operations of the 5th-7th February 1900 and the action at Vaal

Krantz; the operations on Tugela Heights and action at Pieter's Hill; operations in the

Transvaal, 1900; in Natal, 1900; in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, 1900; and in the

Orange River Colony, 1900; twice Mentioned in Despatches, and promoted Brevet

Major, 29.11.1900; changed his name by Royal Licence to Stuart-French in 1911 in

order to inherit from his elder brother Thomas the estate of their uncle Thomas

French; served during the Great War with the 5th Dragoon Guards as Deputy

Assistant Quarter Master General to General Burn Murdock; died of heart failure,

23.12.1916, and is buried in Bishop's Stortford Old Cemetery, Hertfordshire.

425. Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan, awarded to Captain D M Whitten,

Parachute Regiment. The medal is presented in mint condition, with the

'AFGHANISTAN' award bar. The medal is laser engraved named to the rim and

comes in the original award box, with his details to the base.

This medal has only been awarded since 2002 for service in Afghanistan, these are

rarely seen for sale and even rarer to an Officer of the Parachute Regiment.

Helmand, or as it was called by those present - 'The Wild Wild West' was one of the

toughest areas of operation in the entire country, with operations there resulting in a

large number of casualties to the Paras. Very rarely will you see a Parachute

Regiment associated service medal, let alone to an Officer who served so recently.

Lieutenant Michael Philip Moreton, a native of Mill Hill, London; commissioned

Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, 27.2.1954; Lieutenant

23.1.1959; 'At 18 years of age I was obliged to do two years' National Service. My

ambition to become a Fleet Air Arm pilot was thwarted by colour blindness, but I

joined the Middlesex Regiment and was selected for officer training at Canterbury

and at Eaton Hall, Cheshire. It was very hard work, but a superb experience and I

have never been so fit. When that was over, I wanted to rejoin the Middlesex in

Austria (plenty of skiing opportunities), but instead was assigned to the Royal Irish

Fusiliers in Korea. That was a bit of a shock, but at least by then the fighting in Korea

was over.... In 1954, the country was in a terrible state, twice overrun by the North

Koreans and Chinese armies and then rescued by United Nations forces. The first

thing we noticed in Pusan was the overpowering smell; the whole city had become a

giant shanty town, home to refugees from all over Korea.

We travelled by train and truck via Glouster Valley, scene of much bravery during the

fighting, to our battalion's camp near the Imjin River, bordering North Korea. My

platoon, like all the others, occupied a small hill, of which there were thousands, with

well dug-in defences. The opposing forces did much the same so it was a stalemate

situation. The next seven months we trained, patrolled the De-Militarised Zone

(DMZ), observed the opposition on the other side of the border... Winter was bitterly

cold, a north wind blowing from Siberia keeping temperatures down to minus 40

degrees C.

From Korea we were sent to Kenya to fight what were described as Mau Mau

terrorists.... Out of the train, it was onto army trucks along the only tarmac road in the

country, 80 miles north to our camp near Lake Naivasha.... Soon we were patrolling

deep into the bamboo forest looking for the Mau Mau, relying on native African

trackers to guide us.... I was posted to the King's African Rifles' headquarters at

Nakuru, as Motor Transport Officer, responsible for 20 staff and 30 vehicles.... In

fact, the country's bumpy, twisty roads were a great opportunity to develop racing

skills, and I would happily four wheel drift a one-tonner or Land Rover.'

After his national service had ended Moreton trained as a Car Chassis Engineer, and

worked for 23 years at Ford in Product Development and Project Management, at

AVO and Motorsport, in the centre of the action creating and managing the majority

of the Rallye Sport Fords. After Ford he moved first to TWR, managing the Jaguar

XJ220 project, then to Aston Martin Lagonda as acting Operations Director,

producing Volante and Vantage supercars, and finally to KBD Design in Essex.

Whilst Moreton's technical knowledge increased so too did his racing prowess.

Having joined the British Automobile Racing Club he set about racing his MG TA at

Silverstone and Goodwood; in later life he wrote Rallye Sport Fords, The Inside

427. S.O.E. WW2 British medal group to Lt. Colonel David Alexander, late 2nd Bn

Royal Scots who parachuted into enemy held Malaya to arm and train insurgent

guerrillas in 1945.

Group includes 2nd pattern Commander of the Order of the British Empire C.B.E.

(Civil), Member of the Order of the British Empire M.B.E. (Military), 1939-45 Star,

Burma Star, Defence & War Medals, the last 5 mounted onto a court mounted bar,

as worn. Group also includes colonial administrative insignia, various award

documents and photographs associated with his military and civilian service,

including those with movie stars and royalty.

At the outbreak of war he volunteered for the 2nd Bn of The Royal Scots, hoping that

he might use his language skills as an interpreter (A dux of Montrose Academy,

David Alexander graduated in modern languages from the University of Edinburgh in

1939. Later in his life he would learn another six languages, including Cantonese). It

was not to be and instead he was sent to Hong Kong in the role of secret censor and

interpreter, which was to play an important part in his subsequent career. By 1943,

as a Captain, he volunteered to join the Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.). In

March 1945 he was dropped behind enemy lines in Malaya, only his second

parachute jump. Months of guerrilla action followed, disrupting Japanese

communications and encouraging local people against the Japanese invaders. When

the Japanese capitulated after the dropping of the bombs at Hiroshima and

Nagasaki, Lieut-Col Alexander took their surrender at Ipoh. He was awarded the

MBE (Military) for ''gallant and distinguished services.''

In 1946 he commenced a career in what was then the administrative branch of the

Colonial Service. A brief posting to Nigeria, where his ability was not recognised,

was followed by a secondment to the War Office's British Military Administration in

Cyrenaica (Libya) eventually being Chief Secretary to the independent United

Kingdom of Libya's Ministry of the Interior. In 1953 he was transferred to Hong Kong

where he was put in charge of the Essential Services Corps and the Civil Aid

Services, which was responsible for protecting families in the event of a major

emergency or disaster. He stayed in Hong Kong until his retiral in 1975. His final

appointment was as Director of Urban Services which carried with it membership of

the Governor's Legislative Council. Until 1973 he was chairman of the Housing

Authority. His approachable and friendly management style made him one of the

most popular of Hong Kong's senior administrators. His duties of providing

administrative support to the Urban Council meant that at times he came into conflict

with local tycoons and other power brokers. This might have cost him further

advancement. He was created CBE in 1973. On returning to Scotland in 1975 he

was appointed a part time Commissioner of Income Tax and then was asked to

stand as a Conservative candidate for a seat in Lothian regional Council. Despite a

dislike of partisan political dispute, he was successful and between 1982 and 1986

was chairman of the Planning and Development Committee. Fellow Conservatives

describe him as an unassuming man who was extremely helpful, and hard working -

not above cleaning the floor of the local constituency offices if necessary. 'He was

totally honest and had great integrity. You knew exactly where you stood with him.

He was more than gentlemanly - one of the nicest people I have ever met,' says a

friend. He married in 1947 and had two children, Richard and Elaine. His first wife

died in 1973 and he married Peggy James in 1982. He died in 1997. $2500 to $3000

campaign stars. The 5th (Scottish) Parachute Battalion fought in a number of actions

in Italy where they were involved in the Battle of Monte Cassino, the battles along

the River Sangro and in the Salora region. In Greece, the battalion was part of

Operation Manna a British force sent to secure Athens following the German

withdrawal from the Balkans they further took part in an amphibious landing at

Salonika in November. During this time the battalion suffered over 100 casualties. In

the south of France, the Battalion carried out a parachute assault during Operation

Dragoon. At the end of the war, now attached to the 6th Airborne Division, the

The British Army during Operation Banner spent 38 years in Northern Ireland, during

which the 2nd Battalion spent more time there than any other infantry battalion.

Between 1971 and 1996, 51 men of the Parachute Regiment were killed while

serving in Northern Ireland. In what has since become known as Bloody Sunday, on

30 January 1972, the 1st Battalion, stationed in Belfast, were flown to Derry to assist

in policing a civil rights march demanding an end to internment. A section of the

protesters began to riot and firing erupted. The Paras and other soldiers killed 13

civilians and wounded another 17 (of which 1 later died of their wounds).

431. A Korean War group of 2 to Trooper R. H. Moore, 7th Royal Tank Regiment

Korea Medal 1950-53, 1st issue, impressed named to 19036786 TPR. R. H.

MOORE. R.A.C. & U.N. KOREA 1950-54 Medal, unnamed as issued. Display court

mounted.

Trooper R. H. Moore was a Driver in 7 Troop, and was an experienced reservist

having served in the Second War. He was recalled to duty with ‘C’ Squadron 7th

Royal Tank Regiment and was amongst the first batch of men of the unit to arrive in

Korea. His Korean medals were sent to 31, Greenock Avenue, Tatley, Sheffield,

Yorkshire. On 29 July 1950 ‘C’ Squadron 7th Royal Tank Regiment, commanded by

Major A. J. D. Pettingell, R.T.R., were guarding an air base in Norfolk when it was

decided the Squadron would deploy to Korea as part of 29 Independent Infantry

Brigade. On 8 August the first batch of Crocodiles arrived and four day’s later the

first party of Reservists arrived followed by a steady stream of men and vehicles. On

the 12 October 1950, together with the Centurions of the 8th Hussars, ‘C’ Squadron

equipped with Churchill tanks sailed on the Empire Fowey and arrived in Pusan on

15 November. The Squadron supported the three infantry battalions of 29 Brigade,

1/Glousters, 1/Northumberland Fusiliers and 1/Royal Ulster Rifles for a year, initially

in atrocious winter conditions. Because of their ability to climb steep slopes and their

versatility to move over paddy fields the Churchill tanks proved extremely useful in

providing close fire protection. The Squadron sailed back to Southampton on the

Empire Orwell on 8 October 1951. $600 to $700

William Leslie Chivers, the son of Albert and Mary Jane Chivers, was a native of

New Malden, Surrey, England, where he was born on 8 September 1907. At the time

of William's baptism on 4 October 1907, his father was described as being employed

as a 'Cab Driver' - which must have heavily influenced William's choice of career, as

he too became a driver being appointed a Head Chauffeur to the Royal Household of

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 1904 William resided with his family at 2 Belmont

Villas, Seaforth Terrace, West Barnes. By 1911 William was then living with his large

family - at the family residence located at 67 Dorain Road, Rayner Park, Wimbledon.

William married Violet M. Smith, at London, England, in the last quarter of 1929.

William is finally recorded as having died at Basingstoke, Hampshire, England,

sometime in the second quarter of 1978. Interestingly, William's son, Derek Chivers,

also followed his father into the British Army and subsequent service with the Royal

Household. In an article published in the Henley Standard on 12 March 2012, he

made several mentions of his fathers 'Royal Service' as the Head Chauffeur to

Queen Elizabeth: ‘A man from Sonning Common is hoping to be reunited with the

woman he played cricket with as a boy — the Queen. Derek Chivers, 77, is the son

of the royal family’s former head chauffeur, William Leslie Chivers, and once lived in

the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace. In the summer, he would go to Balmoral, the

family’s Scottish retreat, where he would enjoy playing sports with a young Princess

Elizabeth. Mr Chivers has many memories of that time and would like the chance to

meet the Queen when she visits Henley on June 25 and thank her for all she did for

his family. "I was lucky enough to go everywhere with my father," he said. "I used to

go up to Balmoral in the school holidays as well as to Sandringham and Windsor

Castle”. "I had an absolutely marvellous time with our Queen."Mr Chivers snr began

driving the royal family in late 1945 when he was demobbed from the army. His son

Zachariah William Coles was a long serving member of the B.R.C.S. in both World

Wars. A member of the Kent Home Guard he was the licensee of the Running

Horses public house in Erith, Kent. He was killed instantly when the pub was hit

during a bombing raid on 29 November 1940. Those who were killed inside the pub

were apparently untouched from the blast, but died from the shock waves from the

explosion. Zacharia’s wife, survived, having been serving drinks at the rear of the

His Certificate of Service shows he was born 10th September 1881, Ilfracombe,

Devon. He joined the Navy on 23.5.1899. Whilst in service he served at the following

establishments/ships: Northampton, Curacoa, Vivid I, Eagan, Hussar (Dryad Class

Torpedo Boat – served 16th January 1903 – 1st August 1903 in Somalialand),

Hibernia, Cambridge, Cornwallis, Impregnable, Collingwood, joing Royal Fleet

Reserve 10th March 1912.

Morris was aboard H.M.S. Albion from 18th March 1915 to May 1916, when the ship took part in the final bombardment actions against the Turkish forts in the Dardanelles Starits and was in close support of the British Landing’s at ‘V’ Beach on the 25th April. On 28 April 1915 she suffered significant damage from Ottoman shore batteries during an attack on Krithia, forcing her to retire to Mudros for repairs. Back in action on 2 May 1915, she again suffered damage necessitating repairs at Mudros. On the night of 22–23 May 1915, Albion beached on a sandbank off Gaba Tepe and came under heavy fire from Ottoman shore batteries. About 200

fragmentation shells hit her, but they could not penetrate her armour and did no serious damage, and Albion suffered fewer than a dozen casualties. After efforts were made to free her by reducing her weight and by using the recoil of firing her main guns simultaneously, her sister ship Canopus towed her to safety on 24 May 1915, Albion still firing at the Ottoman forts while being towed clear. Albion left the area for repairs on 26 May 1915 and underwent a refit at Malta in May–June 1915.

On 4 October 1915, Albion arrived at Salonika to become a unit of the 3rd Detached

Squadron, tasked with assisting the French Navy in a blockade off the coasts of

Greece and Bulgaria and with reinforcing the Suez Canal Patrol. She embarked the

first British Army contingent of 1,500 troops for Salonika and escorted French

troopships carrying the French second contingent.

Morris finished his naval career onboard H.M.S. Arrogant, which served as the

Flagship of the Fifth Submarine Flotilla (Dover Patrol), being invalided out of the

Royal Navy on the 2nd May 1919. John Morris Died in June 1972, in Devon, aged 90

General R.J. Feilden, C.M.G.. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, with the

7th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps (Militia), August 1895; appointed an Extra

Aide-de-Camp to the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Glasgow, G.C.M.G., Governor and

Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand, February, 1896; promoted Lieutenant,

January 1897; appointed an Extra Aide-de-Camp to the Rt. Hon. Lord Lamington,

K.C.M.G., Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Queensland, June 1899; appointed

Lieutenant, 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, 15.2.1900, and served in South Africa

during the Boer War; invalided to Australia, where he arrived, 1.9.1900; promoted

Captain, 12.3.1904; Major, 2.2.1915; served during the Great War with the 6th

Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps; retired, 10.7.1920; in later life was a Justice of

the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, and was High Sheriff of

continued to hold his position until severely wounded in the face. He then brought in

the remainder of his party.’

Lewis Wensley Bond Jennings was commissioned on the Unattached List in August

1918 and gained an appointment in the 64th Pioneers in the following month. He

was, however, attached to the 48th Pioneers at the time of his M.C.-winning exploits

near Jandola in early January 1921. Very probably as a result of his severe wounds,

Jennings was placed on the Retired List with effect of December 1923 (London

Gazette 25 July 1924 refers).

Colonel Frederick Lockwood Edridge served with the 20th Regiment (East Devons)

in the Crimea in 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol and capture of Kinbourn

1858, including the Trans Gogra operations under Lord Clyde. On the 28th June

1907, as one of the last surviving Indian Mutiny officer’s, he was awarded the

George Hugman was born in Cambridge, England in 1892. He enlisted in

Kensignton, new South Wales on the 27th August 1914, stating he had served 3 ½

years in the Territorial Forces in England. Allocated to D Company, 3rd Battalion

A.I.F. 1st Day Lander at Gallipoli, wounded, shrapnel wound to knee 30th April 1915,

France 14th August 1916, Promoted Corporal 11th January 1917. Attended Signal

School, wounded France 5th May 1917, discharged 14th February 1918 in Sydney.

480. Military Cross to Lieutenant J.M. Sanger, Royal Field Artillery, An Australian,

who was rejected for service, who then enlisted into the British Army.

GV Military Cross, mounted as awarded, period engraved to reverse LIEUT. J. M.

SANGER R.F.A. John Midlred Sanger was born in 1888 and tried to enlist into the

Australian Imperial Force in 1915, but was rejected on account of having once had

Rheumatic Fever as a child. He promptly travelled to Sydney where he boarded the

P&O ship ‘Malwa’ arriving in London in September 1915, where he was accepted

into the British Army. He served in the Royal Field Artillery (Special Reserve), was

awarded the Military Cross and was twice Mentioned in Dispatches, London Gazette

18th May 1917 & 11th December 1917.

The 29th June 1917 edition of the Albury Banner and Wodonga Express stated he

has been recommended for the D.S.O., this being the case, this must have been

downgraded to the award of the M.C. $1800 to $2000

482. British Household Cavalry (Life Guards) Helmet - Funeral Prototype. A very

usual variant of a Life Guards (Queen’s Crown) other ranks helmet which had its

shell blackened, as a prototype for the funeral of Winston Churchill in 1964. At the

time it was proposed that this helmet was part of a uniform that would be worn by the

guard who would stand over Sir Winston Churchill’s casket, as he was laying in

state. It was later thought that this was an honour that would be more appropriate for

a Head of State and was not implemented by the government of the day.

483. First World War Military Medal to 2247 Private Alexander Robert David

Thompson, who served with the 55th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.

During the enemy attack on front line facing QUEANT on 15th May 1917, Private

Thompson, whilst acting as a stretcher bearer, showed great courage and devotion

to duty. Although under direct enemy observation, he carried out his duties

continuously for 17 hours without rest, and in a manner worthy of the highest

commendation. Although an untrained stretcher bearer, he, together with the rest of

the bearing party, saved by first aid the lives of seriously wounded men. The

Commanding Officer of the 54th Battalion wrote an appreciative letter for the help

given, and specially mentioned the stretcher bearing party for their good work.'

484. A Great War British Military Cross ‘1918 Spring Offensive’ & P.O.W. medal

group to Lieutenant Robert Wilson, late Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Medals have been court mounted for display, including, GRV Military Cross - un-

named (attributed London Gazette, 16th September, 1918) - see research

below,1914/15 Star, impressed to: 1841 PTE R. WILSON, AYR. YEO; British War &

Victory Medals, impressed to: 2. LIEUT. R. WILSON.

Robert Wilson, of 478 St. Vincent St, Glasgow initially enlisted with the 1st Battalion,

The Ayeshire Yeomanry and entered the Gallipoli Peninsula at Helles on the 11th of

October 1915. The Battalion served as dismounted Infantry with the 52nd Lowland

Brigade. The Battalion was withdrawn to Egypt in January 1916 and then proceeded

to France. Wilson is shown to have accepted a commission into 9th Battalion of the

Loyal North Lancashire regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on the 30th July 1917. His

Military Cross citation would relate to the German Spring Offensive, being listed 16th

September 1918, which reads:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon during a counter-

attack with great skill and determination. It was largely due to his coolness and

personal example that the enemy was driven back from a position which threatened

the left flank of the battalion. While reorganising his men under heavy machine gun

fire he was wounded'.

Not long after this initial gallant action, he is shown to have been listed as missing in

action on the 21st march 1918. This is a crucial date for units such as the Loyals,

East Kent's and other line units seeing whole platoons, companies and units being

captured. He is shown as being repatriated back to the UK on 2nd December 1918.

He is listed as having died on the 2nd July 1979.

485. First World War ‘Attack on The Maze’ Military Medal to 4508 Private William

George Ross, who served with the 26th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.

Enlisted 14th January 1916 in Queensland. Awarded M.M. (recommended) 11th

November 1916 (attack on the Maze). Wounded May 1917 France, G.S.W. left thigh

– leg amputated. (Attack Hindenburg Line/Bullecourt), discharged 5th July 1919. He

was originally from Coburg Dale, Tasmania. Purchased from the family.

In November (1916) they were moved south to the Somme Valley and throughout

the month the 26th participated in two attacks around a position known as "The

Maze", a salient to the east of Flers. Both of these attacks ultimately proved fruitless,

grinding to a halt in the muddy conditions and resulting in over 300 casualties.

Ernest Joseph Quidley, a miner from Kaukapakapa, attested for the 9th N.Z.

Contingent and was embarked in the S.S. Devon in March 1902. A member of ‘F’

Squadron, he served in the Transvaal and was discharged at Wellington in August

1902; he was sent his Medal & 2 clasps in 1904.

Having in the interim made his way to Australia, where he found employment as a

gardener, Quidley enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Broadmeadows,

Victoria, in August 1914. Appointed a Private in the 4th Australian Light Horse, he

was embarked for Egypt in April 1915 and was attached to the 6th Mobile Veterinary

Section when he served for a brief time in Gallipoli at the year’s end. He remained

likewise employed in the Egypt operations of 1916-17 but was invalided home in

May of 1917 and discharged in February 1918. Quidley died in May 1940, aged 76

years and is buried in Toowong Cemetery, New South Wales; sold with copied

research and roll confirmation. $1000 to $1200

finish to royal cypher & crown, on mounted ribbon, with silver pin back bar.

William Henry Osborne was born in 1865 in Ballarat, Victoria, his father, William, was

28 and his mother, Annie, was 23. He had three brothers and six sisters. He died in

1948 in Warragul, Victoria, at the age of 83.

Quoted from a Victorian Newspaper of the day: “Another attendee at meeting was

Boam’s replacement as DRAC, Major William Henry Osborne. Osborne was a

Captain of Engineers and had commanded No.2 Submarine Mining Company in

Melbourne before his promotion to Major. It is not clear what particular qualifications

Osborne held to be given the role, but it perhaps the fact that this did not seem to

matter was an indication of how little importance the Defence Department attached

to the position and to the rifle club movement in general”.

488. Boer War Australian Commonwealth Horse, 2nd type, cap badge. A rare badge

in superb condition. Good deep strike, lugs intact, tone rich, nice patina and overall

489. A magnificent example of this rare Model 1867 Prussian Gardes du Corp

Officer’s parade helmet. It has a tombac body with double step front and rear "lobster

tail" visors, trimmed in nickel silver. Obverse has silver Guard's star in raised relief,

central planchet has Prussian eagle, wreath and motto worked in gold, and black,

white and green enamel. Helmet surmounted by a highly detailed representation of a

spread-winged eagle in silvered finish with a gilt crown, mounted to the helmet on a

cruciform base. Complete with national and state officer's large size cockades, and

tombac chin scales. Lined in white silk with leather sweatband, front and rear visor

lined in leather. As worn only by two elite Imperial Cavalry units: the Garde du Corps

and the Garde Cuirassier Regiment.

Captain Robert Morrison was a pre war regular and M.I.C. shows he enters France

6th October 1915, commissioned, serves after being commissioned with the Royal

Scots. He receives his Military Cross (London Gazette 26th July 1917), the citation

reading:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Becoming separated from his

platoon, he took charge of a company of another’s unit, and successfully captured

the enemy position after two assaults and knocking out eight enemy machine gun

positions. He then finally joined his own battalion’.

He emigrated to Western Australian post war and served during the Second World

War as a Lieutenant/Sub Inspector with Headquarters, Naval Dockyard Police, 30

Cliff St. Fremantle. $3900 to $4200

Sapper Ernest Northey, 4th Australian Division Signals Company. M.M. impressed

Spr Northey enlisted on 14 July 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Port

Lincoln on 13 October 1915. On 23 March 1916 he transferred to the 4th Divisional

Signal Company. Spr Northey was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 9 October

1916 for, "...good work on the night of 31st August 1916 when repairing telephone

lines for thirteen hours under very severe enemy shell fire..." Sapper Northey died as

a result of wounds 10 November 1919 at Woodville Red Cross Home, Randwick

Hospital, NSW. Comes in a custom made wooden display case with rising sun cap

badge & returned services badge. $1400 to $1600

497. Australian trio & Permanent Forces LS&GC medal group to Honorary Captain

John Pollard, who served with the 3rd Field Ambulance, A.I.F.

Swing mounted for display group includes 1914/15 Star, impressed named to W.O.

Enlisted in the A.I.F. on the 27th August 1914, being a pre war Militia soldier of some

11 years he gained the rank of Warrant officer whilst aboard the troopship

‘Rangatira’. Proceeded with the M.E.F. to Gallipoli and hospitalised in Malta in

August 1915. Promoted to the not often seen rank of Honourary Captain 9th

September 1917 and served at various Field Ambulance units during the war.

Discharged 25th April 1919. Served after the war, earning the rare Permanent Forces

LS&GC medal in 1928. Comes with a large amount of research and personal copies

papers and letters. $2500 to $2700

498. An important officer Lone Pine ‘Casualty’ medal pair to Lieutenant Charles

Carthew, 8th Light Horse Regiment.

British War Medal & Victory Medal impressed named to LIEUT. C. CARTHEW A.I.F.

Comes with a rising sun cap badge.

Born Myrtleford, Victoria in 1882. He served with the militia for six years, with three

years as a 2nd Lieutenant and in charge of the Light Horse in Myrtleford, prior to

enlisting in the 8th Light Horse Regiment (‘C’ Squadron) in September 1914. 2nd Lt

Carthew embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 25

February 1915. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant at Gallipoli on 3 June

1915. Lt Carthew was killed in action on the 1st day of the famous 7 August attack on

the Nek, Gallipoli. He was 33 years of age and as he has no known grave, he is

commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

He final moments are cited in Voices From The Trenches’ by Noel Carthew:

‘The Turks, who had prudently retired to their saps during the bombardment, now

emerged to man their maxims again, in anticipation of their next assault…On the

stroke of the half-hour, as a whistle blew, the first wave of the 8th Light Horse

swarmed over the parapet. As Charles watched, appalled, he saw Colonel White

immediately stagger and fall…He was never to know that within two short minutes

the entire complement of officer’s had been killed and that many of them lay mortally

wounded in an area of less than half an acre. There was no time to dwell on their

probable demise as Major Deeble raised his whistle to his quivering lips to signal the

second charge. Poised on the fire step, Charles leapt onto the parapet, his figure

outlined for an instant against the lightening sky…Charles had gone less than ten

paces when he was hit by a stunning blow. His legs buckled underneath him and, as

he fell, he was dimply aware that a herd of wild horses was trampling him’. (Pages

The Nek was a vitally important position on the northern end of the ANZAC front line

and the scene of a tragic attack by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade at dawn on 7 August

1915. It was a narrow bridge of land that stretched between Russell's Top and Baby

700 across the top of Monash Valley. The Turkish trenches on the slopes of Baby

700 allowed them to dominate the Australian positions below….The first wave of light

horsemen from the 8th Light Horse Regiment were shot down by Turkish rifle and

machine-gun fire. The second line, also from the 8th, scrambled over the dead and

wounded of the first line to make their attack, and suffered the same fate. The 8th

Light Horse suffered 234 casualties, 154 fatal. (Australian War Memorial - online)

Lieutenant Carthew is mentioned in several sources, including ‘Fatal Charge at

Gallipoli’ by John Hamilton, ‘The Nek: A Gallipoli Tragedy’ by Peter Burness and

‘Voices From The Trenches’ by Noel Carthew (Written based on Charles and his two

brothers letters and experiences during the war and included as part of this lot).

499. The Australian First World War multi gallantry award DCM and MID group of 6

DCM to Lt A.J. Lee, late of the 2nd and 5th South Australian Contingent to the Boer

war and 10th Light Horse. Lee won his DCM at Hamish, Sagia and Bir-el-Abd during

the battle for Rommani 4th to 9th Aug 1916. Consists of the GEOV DCM named to 215

Sq Sgt Major A.J.Lee 10th Light Horse, QSA bars CC and OFS named to 81 Pte A.J.

Lee S.A.M.R. KSA SA01 and SA 02 named to 299 Sgt A.J. Lee S. AUST. I.B. 1915

Star to 215 Sgt A.J. Lee and his WW1 pair named Lieut A.J. Lee A.I.F.

During his Boer war service with the Second Contingent, he would have served

alongside Breaker Morant as their regimental numbers are very close. Later he stayed

on with the 5th Contingent thus earning his King’s South Africa Medal.

During the Gallipoli campaign Lee was with B Sqn of the 10th Light Horse, being the

senior sergeant in the squadron. During the fatal attack at the Nek on the 7th August

1915, B Squadron was in the last two waves of the 10th Light Horse’s fateful charge.

Lee was probably In the last wave and thus escaped an injury or possible death as

they were held back at the very last moment. He succussed the famous SSM Spinghall

of B Squadron who was killed on the 7th August in the 3rd wave. Sgt Lee suffered two

wounds later during the campaign on the 29th August 1915 at Hil 60, sustaining a gun

shot wound to the back and a bayonet wound to the buttock.

His citation for the DCM reads:

“At Hamisah, Sagia and Bir-el-Abd from the 4th to 9th Aug 1916. This SSM is

recommended for his bearing and gallantry throughout the whole operation. He has

set a splendid example to the rest of the Regt. For bringing back valuable information

from reconnaissance. During the capture of prisoners at Hamish his splendid

horseman ship and dash was responsible for many captures”.

Over 425 prisoners were taken in this action.

He was later Mentioned In Dispatches during the desert campaigns of 1917. Finally

receiving another wound of “shell Shock” In late 1917. Comes with many photographs

500. The unique Australian ‘Borneo’ Military Medal group of 3 to 4410450 Private

Richard Anderson, who won the Military Medal for an ambush action during the Borneo

confrontation. There being only two Military Medals awarded to Australians for the

entire campaign.

The court mounted group consists of the EIIR Military Medal, impressed named to

4410450 Pte R.R. ANDERSON R. AUST INF. CORPS, AASM bar Malaysia,

impressed named to 4410450 R.R. ANDERSON and the GSM, with bars Borneo and

Malay Peninsula impressed named to 4410450 R.R. ANDERSON.

His Military Medal citation reads:

“Pte Anderson was a member of an ambush party of ten men sited to cut off a party

of enemy which was being followed up after an earlier contact.

At about 1730 hours the enemy appeared un-expectedly at the rear of the ambush.

Pte Anderson was one of the two soldiers able to bring fire to bear. His fire killed one

of the leading enemy. The remaining enemy took cover 15 paces from Pte Anderson.

The OC commanding the ambush and the NCO present were pinned down by enemy

fire and were unable to move to a position to control an assault. Pte Anderson was in

the best position to control an assault onto the enemy. He interpreted and passed on

his Platoon’s Commanders orders. When the 6 soldiers able to move arrived in a

position to assault from the right flank, he calmly and confidently assumed control. He

organised them into extended line and covered their movement by fire and by throwing

grenades.

He realised that the machine gun was not in the best position so he crawled forward

under fire, took over the MG and moved it to a better position. His actions and example

contributed greatly to the success of the operation in which 4 of the enemy were killed.

Circumstances placed him a position of unexpected responsibility and danger from a

very determined and brave enemy. He was under enemy fire at close range for over

30 mins. During this period, his leadership, actions and bravery were in the highest

traditions of the service, and were an inspiration to all.”

Pte Anderson was tragically killed in a car accident not long after his return to Australia.
