The Audi A6Enhanced drivingThe new Audi A6 is designed to enhance the wholeexperience of driving. Its thanks to technologieslike SD card-based Satellite Navigation as standard,as well as optional Wi-Fi technology that lets youand your passengers access the internet on themove. But just as important as what weve addedis what weve taken away. Wherever possible,weve used aluminium in this vehicles construction,which has enabled us to reduce weight, lower fuelconsumption and improve agility.

Youll find a wide range of equipment asstandard, including 17 alloy wheels, leatherupholstery, DAB digital radio and Multi-MediaInterface with a retractable 6.5 display. Engines

PetrolTFSI direct-injection technology is a unique Audiinnovation that includes supercharging. It combinesFSI technology with forced induction giving cars anextra injection of power and torque. It also delivers

enhanced fuel efficiency as precisely the right amount offuel and air are injected into the combustion chambers,enabling the engine to breathe more easily. It resultsin reduced heat loss and increased output, with arounda 15% reduction in fuel consumption and significantlylower exhaust emissions. The latest addition to therange is a TFSI full-hybrid which combines the award-winning 2.0 TFSI engine with a 40 kW electric motorand lithium-ion battery, allowing all-electric driving overshort distances for the first time in the A6. Please seepages 16 and 28 for more information on hybrid driving.

Diesel

We introduced TDI to the roads in 1989, and sincethen, weve continuously refined it, including developingcommon-rail technology. Under this system, a series ofpiezo injectors use electrical charge to precisely controlthe amount of fuel injected into the engine. As well asreducing noise, this allows combustion to happen ata lower temperature, with less oxygen, which lowersemissions. The recently introduced bi-turbo dieselengine is our most powerful six-cylinder diesel engineto date, capable of 313PS and an impressive combinedmpg of 44.8.

Transmission

multitronicTranslating a drivers preferences and intentions into roadperformance, the multitronic transmission system entertainsno compromises whether in terms of dynamism, convenienceor economy. multitronic automatic transmission is available

on models without quattro permanent all-wheel-drive.A continuously variable transmission, multitronic cantransmit up to 400 Nm of torque and permits an exceptionallywide range of gear ratios. The result is smooth, powerfulacceleration and a high level of driving comfort. And thanksto its lightweight design and a number of advanced electroniccontrol systems that monitor gradient, road conditions andthe way the driver is using the accelerator pedal, multitronicalso plays an instrumental role in reducing fuel consumption.

S tronicDriving is all about thinking ahead, which is just what theS tronic dual-clutch transmission does. It works almost as

two separate systems, one engaging the odd-numbered andthe other the even-numbered gears. So when youre acceleratingin second, it has third gear waiting for you. And once you makethe switch, its already thinking about fourth. With two clutchesworking together, you can change gears almost instantly whileexperiencing smooth, uninterrupted power.

tiptronicThe 8-speed tiptronic transmission system reduces both fuelconsumption and CO 2 emissions. It converts high-torque enginepower into sporty performance and operating convenience, withcrisp, fast gear changes and an optimised gear-shift strategy.More spontaneous gear changes are a particular benefit,especially when downshifting. Both in the 'D' (Drive) and 'S'(Sport) programme, the advanced electronics used in tiptronicrespond efficiently to every driver input.

EfficiencyAt Audi, doing less is something were tryingto do more of. Were working to use less fuel,release less CO 2 and waste less energy. Its whyweve incorporated a number of more efficienttechnologies into the Audi A6.

RecuperationWhen a vehicle brakes, the discs convertkinetic energy into thermal energy, which is wastedas it cannot be used. With a recuperation systemlike the one in the Audi A6, the kinetic energy isconverted into useful electrical energy. The way

it works is simple. While the car is coasting orbraking, the alternator voltage is raised above thelevel of the basic electrical system, which enablesthe alternator to generate electrical energy andstore it temporarily in the battery. When the vehicleaccelerates, this energy is used to relieve the load onthe alternator, resulting in a fuel saving of up to 3%.

Enhanced air conditioningThe efficient cooling system in the Audi A6can save up to 8 g/km of CO 2 compared with theprevious model. Its thanks to a new brushlessmotor thats lighter, uses less energy and has alonger operating life.

Lightweight constructionFrom the earliest stages of its design, we looked for ways to save energyin the Audi A6. Its why every component has been optimised for greateragility, improved efficiency and more driving pleasure. In fact, thanks to itshybrid aluminium construction, this advanced model is now approximately15% lighter than a conventional steel vehicle.

Automatic Start-Stop functionIn heavy traffic, your car still uses fuel and releases CO 2 , even when itsstationary. The automatic Start-Stop function counteracts this problem byswitching off the engine when your car comes to a standstill. As soon as youtouch the clutch, the car restarts. In conjunction with TDI and TFSI, it helpssave up to 0.4 litres of fuel every 100km.

Audi cylinder-on-demandHigh performance does not necessarily equate to higher consumption as the engine of the S6 proves. Using advanced cylinder-on-demandtechnology to automatically shut down four of the eight cylinders when theyare not required, particularly in city traffic, you benefit from the efficiencyand low emissions of a car with a much smaller engine. But out on the openroad, the unbridled and instantaneous power of the turbocharged V8 isready and waiting.

Efficiency programmesThe Drivers Information System in the Audi A6 comes as standard withan innovative efficiency programme, which offers advice on improving fuel

economy as you drive. Also, via the standard Audi drive select system youcan choose a new efficiency setting which aids you in driving even moreeconomically. For more details, see page 22.

HybridThe Audi A6 hybrid brings all the comfort, luxury and qualityof the Audi A6 combined with the benefits of a full hybridvehicle. Audi hybrid models offer two things at once

impressive performance and low emissions. You can benefitfrom different driving styles and modes depending on yourneeds, ranging from all-electric and virtually emission-freedriving, to conventional driving boosted by the electric motorto enhance performance.

Electric motorCombines efficiency and dynamism - acting as either tractionengine, generator or starter depending on the driving situationand performance requirement. It has an output rating of40 kW and a maximum torque of 210 Nm. The compact andparticularly lightweight electric motor is connected to thecrankshaft through a clutch this parallel hybrid concept

ensures that available power is transmitted directly. Theresult: convincing drive-off performance and acceleration in just about every driving situation.

2.0 TFSI engineHas received the Engine of the Year* award 5 times. The Audivalve-lift variable valve control system markedly improvesengine efficiency and increases torque at the same time. Thecombination of this and the high torque available from theelectric motor makes for impressive, dynamic acceleration.

Hybrid power electronicsIndependently control the flow of energy between the high-voltage battery and the electric motor; supplying power to thevehicles on-board systems. The use of the latest technologiesallows for high functionality within a compact design.

Lithium-ion batteryDetermines the performance and operating range of the hybrid drivetrain. It has 2 major advantages compared with conventional nickel

metal-hydride batteries: its high energy density means greater poweroutput, whilst the compact construction considerably reduces itsweight. This in turn benefits the vehicles luggage space despite thebattery it has a volume of 375 litres above the loading floor. Activebattery cooling improves the availability of the hybrid system andprolongs its operating life. Thus the Audi A6 hybrid is one of the firstcars in the luxury class to run purely on electricity with a lithium-ionbattery for a certain period.

Hybrid driving modes The A6 hybrid can be driven purely electrically in EV mode upto a speed of 62mph for short distances. This makes for reducedemissions and almost silent driving. D mode is set up for optimisedfuel consumption and main drive power comes from the 2.0 TFSIengine. The program maintains an efficient balance between fuelconsumption and performance. Features of this mode include electricdrive, gliding, start-stop, boosting and recuperation. The boostingfeature enables the electric motor to boost the combustion engine,briefly generating additional output and torque for the hybrid system.The S mode features sporty engine and transmission settings andperformance can be boosted by the electric motor.

Electromechanical power steering Increases efficiency as the steering force isnt supplied by the engine,but is instead generated electrically when required.

e-automatic air-conditioning Operated by an electric air conditioning compressor, workingindependently of the engine. This means climate control is alwaysavailable even in pure electric mode and with the engine switchedoff when the vehicle is at a standstill.

The principle is simple: in the same waythat four brakes ensure better deceleration,four permanently-driven wheels deliverbetter acceleration and road-holding,
