WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM
TARGET AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?(Evaluation Question 3)
IS THIS MUSIC VIDEO FIT FOR PURPOSE?
COULD YOU SEE IT ON A MUSIC CHANNEL?
The overall response was a unanimous yes. Our survey asked various members of our target audience, and they all felt that it was to a professional enough standard to be seen on a music channel such as ‘Kerrang!’ (as stated by the penultimate response). This tells us that it was most ‘defiantly’ (definitely) fit for purpose!
IS THE NARRATIVE CLEAR?
Of the sample who replied, 80% of them felt that there was a clear message and that they understood the narrative clearly.
WHAT WAS THE MESSAGE?
To back this up (and make sure it was clear, that they hadn’t picked up totally the wrong message, we asked them to relay the message they’d picked up on. To our great relief, they all came up with a similar message, with variations, but the same general gist! It was evident that some had picked up on the link between social networks/stereotypes and the lyrics of the song.
DOES THE VIDEO FIT THE GENRE (pop-
punk)?Once again there was a unanimous decision – all participants in the survey agreed that the video was well suited to the genre of Pop-Punk, some explaining that they felt this was to do with the combination of Punk attitude with Pop ideals and themes. This was specifically one of the things we’d tried to convey!
WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE?
Although there was some speculation about the age of the demographic, all the numbers were within the same decade (no significant difference!), which shows there’s a clear idea of target audience. Unfortunately, none went into further detail, such as their income grade or their location or suchlike, but we felt that was to be expected.
WHICH SEQUENCES WORKED BEST
Out of the entire video, the band sequences were the most popular, which (according to our following question, which asked for their reasoning) was generally down to ‘good lip-syncing’, ‘editing’ and ‘exciting camera angles/movements’. Another popular feature was the integration with pop-culture with the use of facebook – they could all relate to the despising of internet trolls and judgemental people with terrible grammar online!
WHICH SEQUENCES COULD BE IMPROVED ?
The forcedness of the party was intentional, as it emphasises how these people are trying to fit their stereotypes. Evidently this wasn’t entirely clear.
People also thought the lighting wasn’t suitable for the setting, part of the reason for this was to make up for the bad quality of one of our cameras, which becomes significantly worse in low light conditions. Too much focus on
insignificant moments was another unpopular thing for the audience. If we were to redo the video, we could easily just shorten the clips used during the generic dancing party scenes.
CONCLUSIONOverall, they all thought it looked professional, and linked the narrative well with the lyrics. The target audience feedback helped us to decide how we’d improve the video (better cameras, more suitable lighting equipment, faster editing) if we were to repeat the project. Most of all, the critical points they gave were all mostly superficial, not detracting from the message we were trying to broadcast and we feel we had successfully achieved all our aims from the project: promoting our band well, creating a video that was entertaining, and to convey a message!
THE AUDIENCES FAVOURITE BITS!
