Page 2: Audience Profiling

TARGET AUDIENCE • Primary Audience: Males of Age 16-22• Secondary Audience: Males of Age23-28 but depending on the Cover lines

and which type of artist is involved, it could go up to 35 years old. This is due to the loyalty the fans have towards older generation artist e.g. Jay-Z.

• The Mass audience will be Afro-Caribbean (Able to understand the context) Audience, but because of the growing popularity of Hip Hop, there will be other ethnic races due to other ethnic rappers in the Genre e.g. Eminem.

• Class=C2-E the main being D, but I’d like to attract C2 by making my magazine more sophisticated.

• Race=Generally Black audience, but due to the growing popularity it will appeal a little bit more to other ethnicities as well. Age=15-28 years oldGender= MaleSexuality= Mainly Straight because of the way females are portrayed and how they are misogynistic.

Why I chose this is as my target audience?• The Males in my target audience are generally from C2 class, the

secondary being D-E income bracket. This is because Rap is seen as a unsophisticated genre, which stereotypically interests working class audiences. This because of the similarity of the music genre to a lower class persons life, .e.g. Being Poor or about drugs. As a niched magazine I wanted to challenge this representation. As Hip Hop becomes more mass market and more ethnicities are appealing to this genre, it allows me to make my magazine more sophisticated. This means that I will write more text, than a usual Rap magazine to attract the C2 income bracket, as my main goal is not just be entertaining but be informational as I try to challenge the stereotypes presented by Hip Hop. Therefore in terms of mass audience it will be the loyal fox thinkers who enjoy the visual images of the front cover and have poor attention span, therefore my front cover must look dynamic.

VAL Types of my Audience. • STRIVERS: Hip Hop has a “rags to Riches” narrative about it. The people are

D-E in bracket income, therefore they are looking to be that “Overnight Success”, as they focus to posses what the Rappers have now which is, Money Fame and Power. This supports the patriarchal dominance but it can also show female empowerment for the women who try to perform in this genre. The is always the ideology in their mind that they can become what the Rappers are now today, and they buy these magazines so they can role model their lifestyle to there's and finding inspiration.

• EXPERIENCER: they are young (25 years Old) and they like new products. I'm thinking for my double page spread to now be of a New artist that is on the rise, so I believe if I use good visuals it can appeal to the experiencer. This is because Hip Hop is obviously a growing genre and, it means I am trying to appeal to those who are trying Hip Hop as genre. But in my double page spread I will make sure this new artist has “energy” this will appeal to the experiencer, and because they are educated (indicated from their High Income) they should be able to concentrate and enjoy the context of the text. (this means that Hedgehog thinkers are my primary audience for the double page spread)

Young and Rubican• EXPLORER: They are young in nature and this can appeal to my

magazine because they are trying to be different. They want to discover new artist in my magazine, and be the first to hear they’re music. As they are young in nature they are still finding what they like and Hip Hop being the growing genre, my magazine can appeal because in terms of the article, it will seem more personal. This can mean TV shows like BET and MTV that focus on Hip Hop can appeal to them.

• STRUGGLER: They are the ones who live day by day, living a very aimless life. What can relate is them winning big, like that being said maybe a new artist blowing up will interest them to be that “over night Sensation”. These are unsophisticated audience of rap the fox thinkers who have poor discipline and victimize themselves, therefore they stay loyal to small brands like my magazine that try to portray how they’re feeling e.g. The Police are Killers.

Mosiac Types• Streetwise Kids, are large young families with many single

parents, often unemployed and claiming benefits, living on Deprived council estates. They can relate to my magazine as most would be strivers, who want a better future. They are unsophisticated and have poor attention span so having images will be important as it keeps them interested.

• University Fringe, These a educated students, who are starting out on careers whilst enjoying the city student life. They relate to my magazine, as they are looking for a way to succeed and are educated, meaning they are more sophisticated and appreciate literature. This means they will be interested in reading about an artist, and find it a stress relief to read.

XXL Magazine • XXL’s mission statement is “to take a more

mature, real and intelligent approach to Hip-Hop, with an emphasis on the music and lifestyle that are at the heart and should of the culture.”

• Ideal readers, are Hip Hop fans, and they target the strivers, who want to be in the Music industry therefore they do annual event such Freshmen Class.

• I am going to research XXL magazine because of the dominance over Hip Hop magazines. The magazine is a influence in what I am trying to create and we have a similar target audience.

Page 9: Audience Profiling

Statistics of XXL (2012)• Reader:- Male Readers=78%• - Median age= 27 • - Median HHI: $47,007 (approx £30500)• - College Educated:44.7%• - African American: 67%• From what we can pick so far is that the main mass

audience comes from African Americans. They tend to be male readers, and come in between the C income bracket. Over half of them have not been college educated which shows they are fox thinkers and are easily distracted. But from the income bracket it proves that rap can appeal to a sophisticated audience at the higher end of the C-E income bracket.

Page 11: Audience Profiling

Why XXL?• XXL is the most popular music magazine

conducted, selling over 100,000 copies. Even though the mass audience comes from African American’s who are in the income bracket of D-E they are still willing to pay more for the magazine than compared to Rolling Stone. It shows the loyalty of the audience for XXL. People Are promoting Hip Hop themselves and fashion and lifestyle. (Interest Point)

XXL • It is becoming more popular the magazine

because of the accessibility and influence that Hip Hop haws in our lives. The music has become more popular, but so has the lifestyle and fashion, this means that more people promote this type of method and therefore it spreads to the mass audience. This is why Hip Hop as a genre becomes more popular. In terms of the accessibility, they have 5,281,435 monthly views on there website. As the company has

Integrated into the Web 2.0 as they believe the future is in the internet.
