Audience Research

Results from online survey(Survey Monkey)

The results of this question support the stereotypical demographic of Britpop. They

are presumed to be girls because a large majority of Britpop groups are boy bands.

–CGhowever it would be argued that this was just

the range of people asked and wouldn’t relate to any details of the music video. I

always think Britpop should aim at the person rather than the gender –TS

I think like previously stated, Britpop as a genre featured almost all boy bands so it makes sense that this would attract a large female demographic as a result. I do however feel that by alienating the viewership by leaning towards one gender over the other it would vastly limit the video’s overall reach. -PS

I agree with the statements entered above. However, I agree that we should not aim at one particular gender, as we could alienate a large potion of our potential audience, and we should instead aim to make it a gender neutral video, if possible. If it does come down to a choice where we can choose between something that will attract females, and something that attracts males, I think aiming to the females would be smarter – they are the larger part of our audience. -CC

We shared the link to the questionnaire on social media, primarily Facebook, so it was assumed that the majority of responders

would be in their teens. This assumption has been proven by the results of the survey. –CG

This gives a good range for the music video, Britpop has come back into fashion in later years with the rise of Vinyl sales and I think

that this would bring a new edge to the video aiming it at people who don't remember the

height of Britpop. –TS

The way that we shared the questionnaire – namely social media, means that it is generally our social groups that answered it, and as such

it is out average age group that will have answered. However, despite this we still

managed to get a good, wide range of people to answer the questionnaire, and as such we do have a sizeable segment of people outside

our age group – namely 35 to 44, who will have been around to remember the height of

Britpop popularity - CC

The younger demographic has proven to be the most prominent response even though the results may have been effected by the way in which the survey was distributed. We should still aim for this demographic as we can relate to it, and thus we should be able to produce a product that they like. -PS

YouTube was founded in 2005 and since then more people have used it to watch music videos, decreasing the audience

number of television music channels. This is supported by the results of our

questionnaire as 73% of people primarily used YouTube. –CG

This would work well for an online distributed however its still note worthy that a lot of people still watch them on the TV –

TS

YouTube has resoundingly been voted as the most popular channel on which to distribute music videos. However, despite it’s obvious

popularity, 23% of the respondents still watch it on the Tv – hence, we would be

alienating a large portion of our audience if we made it unfit for TV - CC

Youtube has proven to be the most popular platform by a landslide, this shows us the dominance of an online platform and the decrease on traditional media (TV). -PS

The answers received from this question have supported my decision not to feature product

placement in our video. Positive responses only made up 10% of the audience, so it seems like it

makes very little impact on the general viewer. –CG

This mirrors nicely with the dissection that most 90’s artist chose not to use products placement in their music videos and would often mimic any that did, it

allows use to focus on the music rather than the product - TS

This question showed us a resounding answer that people are not easily influenced by product

placement, and as such it will likely just irritate them, rather than convincing them to buy it or

making us look more professional. This knowledge allows us to focus primarily on the video that we will

be creating, rather than getting side-tracked with brand names - CC

With almost 50% of the feedback showing us that product placement would not influence the viewer, we intend on limiting any form of branding that would break the viewers immersion. -PS

The highest response was surrealistic interpretation of the lyrics so we will work this into our video to

give viewers what they want to see. –CG

It also gives an empathies on liking to see the band perform during the music video’s which we would

use but noting that it wasn’t a high scorer. -TS

In this question voters could choose more than one answer, and the three most chosen options were

surrealistic interpretation of the lyrics, quick, snappy editing and live performances. Using this knowledge, we have created a plan that involves

the band playing, has a lot of quick editing, changing with the music, as well as an

interpretation of the lyrics. – CC

Feedback showed that the viewership would like to see ‘surrealist interpretations’ of the lyrics, this gives us a great sense of creative freedom as we don’t have to follow the lyrics literally. -PS

This response contradicts that of question five as the highest response was narratives that follow the lyrics. Therefore we will try to work the two features into our own music video. –CG

This also shows that people like to watch music videos for a story and something to enjoy watching while listening to the music – TS

This question has a large, resounding answer, with over half of the people who answered the survey voting that they would like to see a narrative that follows the lyrics. This shows that the viewer would like to feel as if the music video is made specifically to accompany the song itself, and we should plan accordingly. - CC

This shows us that the viewer wants something to engage them while watching a music video, so creating a narrative relevant to the story should do just that. -PS

The results show that two and a half minutes or less is not long enough for a music video, but four minutes or longer is too long. Therefore we will make the length of our video in-between these figures. –CG

This works well for our song we’ve chosen and if it over runs we can edit it down –TS

The results of this question are inline with our thoughts prior to the survey. We will edit down the song to a suitable length. -PS

This question shows that the majority of people would like a video to last between three and a half minutes and four minutes. To stop the audience from becoming bored during our video, we shall take this into account and cut the song accordingly, until it fits into the timeframe shown here. - CC

The three highest responses are live performances, interviews with band members, and behind the scenes' footage. Therefore we will put one or more of these items on our DVD. –CG

I think the DVD could have all of them as it would give ample opportunity to please all people wanting to buy them -TS

I agree that it would make sense to include most if not all of the features listed in the survey on the DVD as it would please people, and it content that we would not have to physically produce. –PS

In this question people could answer more than one question, as we could fit more than one of these onto a DVD. The resounding answer was that they liked live performances and behind the scenes footage, and would be intrigued to see these accompanying the CD. To accommodate this, this is what we will be including with the digipack, as we must cater to our audience. - CC

The most wanted feature is lyrics so we will take on board this response and feature a lyric book in our Digipack. –CG

I Think this would be a great opportunity again to show the lyrics in a different way to add edge to our Digipack –TS

It is clear form the survey’s results that people would like to see a lyrics sheet or book in included in the package, so we will need to look at how we can integrate this into our final digipack design. -PS

This shows easily that over half of out potential audience would like to have lyrics that fit the song included within the digipack, which means that we really should include it within, to cater to our target audience. -CC

Together the results of ‘Yes’ and ‘It depends’ make up the majority of responses so we will cater for their wants and feature some form of artwork within the Digipack. –CG

This will be fantastic to work on great artwork to sell our Digipack to the consumers –TS

I think that by adding artwork to the digipack it would help incentivise the consumer to purchase a physical copy of the album. -PS

The largest response here was that it would influence them, followed closely by it depends on the art included. A very low percentage said that it wouldn’t effect their decision at all, meaning that there is no downside to including art within the digipack, as it seems to be what the customer wants. Not only will it be a way to sell additional albums, but it will also give people a way to remember the album, as they may keep the case for the art alone. - CC
