Media gateway solutions for next generation networks

AudioCodes and IBM BladeCenter – helping to bridge legacy PSTN / TDM networks with IP-based, Next Generation Networks

Voice over IP (VoIP) has the potential

to dramatically change the way we

communicate and the services we

use to run our businesses and stay

connected to our customers. As

enterprises and service providers

deploy VoIP-based applications

and services, these new solutions

need to bridge to the existing Public

Switch Telephone Network (PSTN)

infrastructure and legacy telephone

equipment (PBXs, Voicemail, IVR

systems). The challenge is how to

migrate to the new applications and

services while maintaining the current

working infrastructure. For many

organizations, “rip-and-replace”

strategy is not feasible.

Examples of situations where this

challenge might occur are:

• Unified Communications

• Contact Center Applications

• Conferencing Applications

• Hosted IP-Centrex (SIP Trunking)

• IP-PBX

• Audiocodes advanced SIP

capability in a PCI form factor for

ease of VoIP integration with

IBM BladeCenter and

IBM System x platforms

• Telecom media gateway to help

bridge legacy PSTN / TDM

networks with IP-based, Next

Generation Networks

• IBM BladeCenter family provides

a scalable, open standards based

platform for next generation

networks applications

Highlights

Bridging the worlds of IP and TDM

Using the AudioCodes TP-260/SIP

media gateway, the AudioCodes

solution leverages VoIP media

gateways to interface the new VoIP

applications to the existing PSTN or

TDM equipment. In this capacity, a

media gateway converts the protocols

and voice traffic formats used in the

VoIP world to the formats used in the

legacy PSTN, allowing the two to

interoperate seamlessly.

The AudioCodes TP-260/SIP

The AudioCodes TP260/SIP is a

groundbreaking full-function SIP media

gateway in a unique PCI form-factor.

Acting as a stand-alone gateway,

the TP260/SIP simply utilizes power

and cooling from the host computer,

leveraging an on-board Ethernet

interface for all communications to/

from the host computer. By eliminating

communications via the PCI bus,

installations are much simpler and

avoid most of the complexity of

PCI drivers and operating system

compatibility.

The AudioCodes TP-260/SIP can

be installed in the IBM BladeCenter

PCI Expansion Unit (PEU) or

PEU2. This enables this function to

work seamlessly within a “bladed

architecture” solution, allowing both the

application and the media gateway to

share a common infrastructure.

Up to two AudioCodes TP-260/SIP

adapters can be used in either the

IBM BladeCenter PEU or the PEU2,

enabling up to 16 T1/E1 circuits (480

ports) of TDM connectivity.

The AudioCodes TP260/SIP is ideal

for applications that use streaming

media from the host processor using

SIP and RTP, but need a very low-

cost digital T1/E1 media gateway

for deployment into existing TDM

applications. As a PCI form-factor

product, the AudioCodes TP260/SIP

offers improved price-performance

over alternatives, eliminating the

expensive chassis, power supply, fans

“IBM’s BladeCenter platform and AudioCodes TP-260/SIP media gateways work together seemlessly to create a cost effective and powerful VoIP application platform for both Enterprise and Service Provider solutions. The combination allows one-box delivery of a wide range of applications that would otherwise require racking many different pieces of equipment.”

and cabling that encumber external

packaged gateway solutions.

Available as a full-size Universal PCI

card, the AudioCodes TP260/SIP

supports both 5 Volt and 3.3 Volt PCI

slots. Since the board is not dependent

on the host computer operating

system, virtually any operating system

can be used to control the AudioCodes

TP260/SIP.

Communications and control over

the Audicodes TP260/SIP can come

from any RFC3261 SIP-compliant

application. The AudioCodes TP260/

SIP is available in 1, 2, 4 or 8 T1/E1/J1

spans (30 to 240 ports).

IBM BladeCenter HT

IBM BladeCenter family —

the IT & Network convergence platform

The IBM BladeCenter T chassis

provides hardware redundancy (power

supply, I/O modules, management

modules, L2 switching, mid-plane, etc.)

thereby reducing potential points of

failure in the solution.

The IBM BladeCenter is an advanced

blade system which integrates

servers, storage and networking into

a single chassis — yielding significant

simplification, improved density and

potential TCO savings . A single family

of common server blades, storage, I/O,

switches and networking modules are

fully supported and interchangeable

across the family of BladeCenter

chassis. The IBM BladeCenter chassis

is designed as the ideal solution for

data center deployments. The IBM

BladeCenter H is for high performance

computing platform, while the IBM

BladeCenter T chassis is specifically

designed for telecom central office

deployments.

The new, IBM BladeCenter HT — a

new, telecom optimized version of the

BladeCenter H — opens new market

opportunities with a new and powerful

NGN platform ideally suited for telecom

equipment and service providers.

The IBM BladeCenter T and

BladeCenter HT deliver rich

telecommunications features and

functionality, including fault-tolerant

capabilities, hot-swappable redundant

DC or AC power supplies and cooling,

and built-in systems management

resources in a 20” deep chassis. The

rigorous Network Equipment Building

System (NEBS) Level 3 and European

Telecommunications Standard Institute

(ETSI) outline requirements typical of

telecom central office environments

in the areas of electromagnetic

compatibility, thermal robustness,

fire resistance, earthquake and office

vibration resistance, transportation

and handling durability, acoustics and

illumination, and airborne contaminant

resistance. The IBM BladeCenter T

and BladeCenter HT chassis meet the

NEBS Level 3 / ETSI requirements1.
