ABOUT PICNIC BY WILLIAM INGE A story about love, coming of age, and acceptance of the choices we’ve made in life.

This Pulitzer Prize winning, coming of age play, takes place over 24 hours on Labor Day weekend in a small town in Kansas. The arrival of a young drifter on the morning of the all-town picnic acts as a catalyst, propelling the various women who lead this beautiful, subtle, and honest play, to realize (or remember) the intoxication of romantic love, how it can supersede the familial love which protected and cared for them in their youth, and how love can change everything – for good or bad – in a heartbeat.

ABOUT BRUCEMORE Brucemore’s story reflects the history of Cedar Rapids and eastern Iowa unlike any other setting.

Brucemore, a National Trust Historic Site and cultural hub, is a privately owned, locally operated 501(c)3 non-profit with a mission to engage the public in the history, traditions, resources, and on-going preservation of Brucemore for the enrichment of the community. Completed in 1886, the Queen Anne mansion was home to three generations of community builders. The site recalls stories of industrialists and immigrants, philanthropists and farmers, artisans and architects during a century of innovation. Today, the 26-acre, park-like estate invites exploration of the site’s history, gardens, grounds, and 21-room mansion. Brucemore welcomes more than 45,000 visitors each year to a wide variety of tours, educational programs, events, festivals, concerts, family activities, outdoor theater, and more.

ABOUT THE CLASSICS AT BRUCEMORE Always Classic, Never Stuffy!

The Classics at Brucemore began as a collaboration in 1996, launching outdoor theater in Eastern Iowa, and today continues as signature Brucemore production. The Classics celebrates a rich history of quality live theater, ranging from Greek tragedy to Shakespearean comedy and 20th century American drama. Much more than a play performed outdoors, the Classics fully utilizes the natural site of the Peggy Boyle Whitworth Amphitheater. By taking advantage of the environment, actors emerge from the woods, utilize the trees and foliage, get dunked in the pond, and help themselves to picnics in the audience space.
