Producers’ Message
Jen and Paul Barson - Producers Putting on a show of this size isn’t a simple endeavour, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of so many great people and organizations. We would specifically like to extend our gratitude to cast members Allison Humeniuk and Robyn Walsh – the organizers of our
“Show off and Karaoke” variety night at DSTRCT that raised over $1200 to use towards this production. This fundraiser itself was a massive production and without it, we wouldn’t be able to stage The Drowsy Chaperone for you today. To the directors, cast and crew that have put everything into this: We couldn’t be prouder of all of you. Thank you for your dedication. We know the audience will appreciate it!

Guelph Little Theatre has presented outstanding amateur theatrical productions to Guelph and surrounding communities for over 80 years. Starting with a simple play reading group that met monthly, GLT's first production, Yellow Sands, was staged in November 1935 by an enthusiastic 300-member group who loved live theatre. During the early years, GLT members mounted their productions in schools, church basements and at many other locales in the city.
In 1967, the group purchased and moved into the former Salvation Army Citadel at 107 Dublin Street North. The building was purchased through fund-raising activities and private donations from members and patrons, and the mortgage was paid off within 15 years. However, on November 16th, 1993, the theatre building was destroyed by a devastating fire. For 3 years, the theatre had no permanent home, but for the 1996-97 season, the current space at 176 Morris St opened.
The constant support of the community has allowed Guelph Little Theatre to recover from its difficult financial times and put more money into publicity and production values. As a result, Guelph Little Theatre continues to produce high quality theatre for the community to enjoy. Over the past several decades, GLT has earned a reputation for producing shows of the highest caliber, both artistically and technically. Dramas, comedies, musicals, full-length plays and one-acts; Guelph Little Theatre has done them all, and has won many awards at both the Western Ontario Drama League and Theatre Ontario festivals.

Director’s Message
Tim Clarke – Director I don't like director's notes. A play should speak for itself, and a musical should... sing and dance for itself. So it stands to reason that The Drowsy Chaperone, billed as “a musical within a play”, should sing, dance and speak for itself. But perhaps an annotation or two is in order. The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving pastiche of the American musical comedies that were popular during the 1920s. Naturally, it was conceived by a group of Canadians as an
elaborate stag party performance in the late 1990s. The work evolved and was repeatedly remounted, eventually finding a home on Broadway, where it won five Tony Awards. In the interest of writing good satire, the creators of The Drowsy Chaperone stuffed the libretto with plenty of low comedy, farce, slapstick and a healthy dose of cultural appropriation. Yes, I felt I should mention that in advance. It's twenty seventeen, you see. I won't tell you how the “cringy” moments in this show should make you feel. If they provoke a discussion of any kind, I'm happy. I'll also be happy if the show makes you smile and laugh a bunch. At the heart of The Drowsy Chaperone is a really beautiful message about art and its ability to... Y'know, I've already said too much. That's all. I won't interrupt again! - Tim
