Africa Basics• Africa is the second largest continent in the world.

Only Asia is larger. Africa is the second most populous country also.

• Africa is the most impoverish continent in the world.

• Africa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean.

• Africa is split in half (basically) by the equator.

Regions• There are 8 different Geographical regions in

Africa.• Sahara• Sahel• Ethiopian Highlands• Savanna• Swahili Coast• Rainforest• African Great Lakes• Southern Africa

Sahara• Located in the northern portion of Africa. • Largest hot desert in the world (extremely hot and dry).

• The Sahara covers parts of several African nations including Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan and Tunisia.

• Stretches 3.3 million square miles and makes up about 25% of Africa.

• Most of the Sahara Desert is undeveloped and features a varied topography.• The Sahara has sand dunes, sand and gravel plains, and plateaus

of rock

Sahara Desert continued• There are also several mountain ranges within the

Sahara and many are volcanic.

• Most of the water found in the Sahara today is in the form of seasonal or intermittent streams. • The only permanent river in the desert is the Nile River

that flows from Central Africa to the Mediterranean Sea.

Sahara Continued• Due to the high temperatures and arid conditions

of the Sahara Desert, the plant life in the Sahara Desert is sparse.

• Animals found in the Sahara: spotted hyena, the gerbil, sand fox and Cape hare. Reptiles like the sand viper and the monitor lizard are present in the Sahara as well.

Sahel• Semi arid land western and north-central Africa

extending from Senegal eastward to The Sudan.

• The Sahel stretches from the Atlantic Ocean eastward through northern Senegal, southern Maurtania, the great bend of the Niger River, northeastern Nigeria, south-central Chad, and into The Sudan.

• The Sahel is the transitional zone between the extreme conditions of the Sahara and the savannas.• The Sahel is made up of flat and barren plains.

Sahel continued• Steppe climate with low-growing grass and thorny

shrubs.

• Animals of the Sahel include: camel, pack ox, and grazing cattle and sheep.

• soil erosion and desertification resulting from growing human populations have made more demands upon the land.

Savanna• Grasslands that cover almost ½ of Africa.• Stretches about 5 million square miles and is

located in central Africa.

• There is a significant amount of wildlife in the Savanna.

Page 21: Auditory: Video for countries and Geography of Africa

Savanna continued• tropical grassland with warm temperatures year-

round and with its highest seasonal rainfall in the summer.

• The savanna is characterized by grasses and small or dispersed trees that do not form a closed canopy, allowing sunlight to reach the ground.

• Animals include: wildebeest, warthogs, elephants, zebras, rhinos, gazelles, hyenas, cheetahs, lions, leopards, ostrich.

Rainforest• Much of the rainforests in the world have been

destroyed. Deforestation, road construction and slash-and-burn farming have already wiped out roughly 90 percent of the West Africa's rainforests.

• Africa’s rainforest is home to half of the continent's animal species.
