A WINNER!This year's topical theme was 'Football Nations of the World.' The stalls werefestooned with national flags, and of course there were the ubiquitous PenaltyShoot Outs.
The sun shone, and the crowds were treated to a range of interesting stallsand entertainments. Ratby Co-operative Band welcomed us in, and this yeara Brookvale College student band, 'No Apparent Reason' played. 2B DanceProductions were here again, followed by the popular children's races.

LEICESTERSHIRE CONSTABULARY
Dear Residents of Ratby,
1hope that you are all well and enjoying someof the nice weather we have been havingrecently. This brings me to theftsof gardeningequipment which is always prevalent at thistime of year. It's a case of securing equipmentand post coding it if possible, make shedsburglar proof with sturdy locks and an alarm. Also, secure boundaries, garden gates etc. This also applies to dwellings which becomean easier target as the heat rises. Iknow thatduring the summer most people will havehouse windows open but please remember toshut them if you leave the property, especiallyground floor windows and doors. It's the oldcliche, 'prevention is better than cure.'
There still appears to be a handful of youthswho insist on being a nuisance. In the summerholidays Iwould urge parents and guardians tobe mindful of where their children are, not onlyon an anti- social level but a safety one. Iappreciate that it's only a handful that causeproblems and the majority of kids are goodkids. On this note I wish everyone a very happysummer.
Shed alarms and other crime preventionmeasure's can be purchased from New Parksfront enquiry office. As always Ican becontacted via my voice mail on 0116 222 22 22using my collar number Pc 4334.

There's good news and sad news from theParish Council this month.
Sad because our excellent clerk Mrs GeraldineAldwinckle has left us for greener pastures. Ata small ceremony the whole council said aheartfelt thank you to Geraldine for hercontribution to their work on your behalf, andwished her well in her new and excitingappointment. The good news is that there arelots of really great applicants for the vacancyshe has left. By the time you read this weshould be test driving our new Clerk!
It was also sad to have to say goodbye toCouncillor Jacqualyn Batty who left us becauseof failing health. Jacqualyn, we hope thatretirement will make your life morecomfortable. And the good news is that weactually had a young volunteer come forwardto fill one of the vacancies. We look forward towelcoming Mick Earl at our August meeting.
Then there's the sad news of further vandalismaffecting Council property around the village.Again, repairs have to be made and graffitiremoved and YES it is being done at yourexpense. Some of you may have seen the foulgraffiti daubed on the 'bus shelter andelsewhere recently; ifyou didn't then countyourself blessed. The good news is that weknow who did it and the individual will be dealtwith. Your Parish Council has adopted a zerotolerance policy towards those defacing ordamaging council property and will prosecuteoffenders wherever possible.
Finally, here's some good news about theequipment for Ferndale Park. We haveordered the multi-sport area and expect it to beinstalled in August. It probably seems to havetaken far too long to reach this point but wehad to make sure the money was to handbefore placing the order. So let's rejoice aboutwhat is happening now and look forward towhat is coming soon.
Ferndale Community Park Group
It is with sadness that I must inform you thatthe Ferndale Community Park Group (FCPG)was dissolved at a meeting held in April.
Prior to the group being dissolved we receivedtwo hastily written letters from Ratby ParishCouncil (RPC). One being an apology and theother a letter of support, we are not sure why.The apology contained so many errors in itsdetail that it was deemed worthless. The letterof support was seen as unconvincing.
The FCPG has tried to convince the RPC thatthe plans, drawings and costings previouslyagreed to, are adhered to at all times. However, some members of the RPC seem tothink that they are qualified to change everyaspect that they come across. They clearly arenot! It is this unnecessary interference thatgives us no confidence that the RPC willdeliver the park that was professionallydesigned at a cost of £15,000 and hence ourdecision to dissolve the group.
Did you know that some of our ParishCouncillors live outside of our village, and don'talways see things as we villagers do?
The ratepayers of this parish need to put somepressure on the RPC to complete this projectto the professional plans, drawing and costsalready agreed.
Phone, write, email and visit the council officeand demand that this park be completed. Forthe second summer running the children ofRatby have no equipment to play on inFerndale Park. This is unacceptable for avillage of this size.

With your support we managed to raise over£600. This money has been handed to thecouncil as a donation, for the specific use inthe Community Garden aspect of the park. Anarea in the park for all to enjoy. The money willbe held in the councils' accounts, for all to see.The account is accessible by the publiconrequest.
The FCPG would like to thank all those whosupported our events.

RAY LANDER 1928 - 2006
We at f* Ratby Scout Group are very sad to report that we have lost a fantasticmember and friend Ray Lander.
He started scouting many years ago at St Barnabus Church with his wife Eileen. They were later involved at StChad's, Coleman Road where, always ready tohelp out Ray would drive the van to camps.
In 1971 Ray set up a Scout Group in Ellistown, where he "acquired and did up" ahut for the group. Whilst doing that he also provided them with a mini bus. Thisis how Ray was, his whole life was for Scouts. The present Group Scout Leadersaid how much they thought of him, he couldn't find adequate words to describewhat Ray had done for their group. Ray was definitely "the man" at Ellistown.
We all feel the same at Ratby. He was always at hand to help the group in everykind of way. He would do serious stuff, fun stuff, he would make fantasticgames, creating all the equipment himself. He organised gang shows, his ideaswere prolific and never ending. He taught boys and girls how to canoe (whichwas his thing) and also how to shoot rifles. Nothing was ever too much troublefor Ray.
Over the years Ray provided for the Ratby Group, 12 canoes, a mess tent and acontainer for storage. He spent many hours, "doing up" the hut in MartinshawWoods for scout use, only to see it vandalised and burnt down.
People who knew Ray over the years in Scouting have all said the same, what asuper person he was, what an inspiration to the groups with which he wasinvolved, always willing to help". Awarden at Johns Lee Wood said, "he oozeswith Scouting" it was so true.
During his long illness the Scouting Medal of Merit was arranged for Ray for hiswonderful works to Scouting but unfortunately he passed away before it could bepresented to him. The medal has now been passed onto his widow, Eileen. We will be placing a plaque in Ray's memory in the Church Rooms, alongsidethat of another great Scouter, Trevor Sleath.
All in the 1®^ Ratby Scout Group will miss a genuine and dedicated man foreverything he did for the children, leaders and group.

VILLAGE SOCIETY NOTES
In May 26 members of the Village Societyenjoyed a talk by Jacky Shepherd on 'Workingwith the National Trust'. Since retiring she hasbeen a volunteer, mainly at Sudbury Hall inDerbyshire. Her time is spent variously, as aroom steward, tour guide, in the shop or withthe education team, as Sudbury houses theMuseum of Childhood. The house is also
famous for its staircase carving andplasterwork, every ceiling being different. Some of the slides showed the intricatedetail and quality of this work.Though involved with the more serious aspectsof security, health and safety regulations etc., itwas obvious that the job had many lightermoments. Jacky said that she enjoyed talkingto people and answering questions. Theinformation which she had learnt aboutthe house was often added to byknowledgeable visitors. We were all amusedby her statement that the item most oftenappearing in the 'Lost and Found' category was'my wife'!With its flexible hours, pleasant environmentand stimulating company, this would seem tobe an ideal job. The only drawback is distance. The two nearest N.T. houses are Caike Abbeyand Sudbury Hall; there are none inLeicestershire.
At our June meeting the talk was given byFiona Lire. She is an ex-nurse who now works
for the Leicester Museum Service as Assistant
Keeper in the Home and Family Life section. She told us about 'Old-fashioned Remedies',through the ages, starting in the mediaevalperiod. At that time doctors dealt with the fourbodily humours and treatment involvedcauterisation with hot irons and blood-lettingwith leeches applied! Many 'cures' were based on superstition aswith laying a crooked sixpence on the gum fortoothache, in the belief that the Devil cannotuse crooked things. So we learnt the origin ofthe nursery rhyme 'There was a crooked man'.Herbal remedies were popular, with the

Itwas interesting to note that many old remediessuch as herbalism and even maggots forwounds and leeches for swellings areenjoying a come-back in modern medicine.Perhaps there is something to be said for themafter all.
