A dragnet went beyond the scope of the Zephyrhills Police Department and Pasco Sheriff’s Office, who initial- ly pursued the case. The FBI and Bu- reau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms had joined the search. The Colorado State Patrol made the arrests after a high-speed chase and crash on Interstate 25 in south- east Colorado. By 10 a.m. the suspects were apprehended including one who ran from the scene. According to authorities, the 20- mile chase ended when the Subaru Impreza the suspects were in rolled. Lee Grace was shot in the leg and tak- en to a local hospital. The FBI reported that the Dough- erty Gang was trying to elude cap- ture by hiding out or camping in ru- ral areas. FBI agents descended on a Coloroado Springs outdoor recreation shop Tuesday where it was believed the trio had purchased a tent. The trio had been on the run since Aug. 2 when ZPD officer Kevin Wid- ener attempted to pull over a Subaru they had stolen from Ryan s girlfriend, according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office. They fired at least 20 rounds with the chase that reached 100 miles per hour ending after a bullet punctured a tire on the police cruiser. Widener was not injured and returned to work that day. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Noc- co and ZPD Chief David Shears urged the suspects to turn themselves in to no avail. The trio reportedly used an AK- 47 assault rifle and machine pistol in a Valdosta bank robbery just six hours upon firing at Widener. A U.S. magis- trate had issued warrants for their ar- rest. The three reportedly stormed into a CertusBank and fired two shots into the ceiling. They all wore masks, hats, long-sleeved shirts and pants. Maj. The budget workshop allowed Drumm to explain and highlight the accounts of the city budget, including the impor- tant $17.2 million general fund. In a year where cuts are the norm, council appeared to agree to increase the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce funding from $2,500 annually to $10,000. An additional $2,500 will come from the general fund revenue and $5,000 from Community Redevel- opment Area funds. Other non-profit groups who receive funding from the city remained the same as their allocation from last year. The Main Street Zephyrhills organization will receive $5,000 from the CRA and the Zephyrhills YMCA will continue to get its $10,000. We re in a position to up it a notch, said council vice presi- dent Ken Compton. “I’m not sure of the entire $10,000.” Drumm said he budgeted $2,500 because that is what it was in recent budgets. Council received a memo from the chamber asking for the increase. Drumm added that funds could be pulled from different ar- eas of the budget including the CRA. The chamber has done a great job in the past year and they have gone in a new direction, said councilman Lance Smith. They are doing a lot of great things in the community and I would be very supportive of their request. It was suggested to balance the funding out by allocating $7,500 to the chamber and cutting the YMCA funding to $7,500, but Drumm said the funding for both organizations could be at $10,000. Fourth-grader Ryan Diaz throws outfi rst pitch at last week’s Rays game

With 56 classmates from Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary SchoolÕ s PLACE program cheering him on from the stands last Thursday, Ryan Diaz threw out the fi rst pitch before a Tampa Bay Rays game at Tropicana Field.

Whether it was a strike or a ball did not matter as much as the thrill he and the local schoolchildren got out of that ceremo-nial pre-game toss. Standing a few feet in front of the mound, the 9-year-old threw the ball high into the baseball glove of Rays starting pitcher Wade Davis.

Ò I thought I had to do it again,Ó said Diaz, who was con-cerned about not getting the ball up to home plate. “I thought (Davis) had to catch it low and not high.”

On the fi eld with Diaz was Mary Collige, Taylor’s manager of the Pasco Learning and Activities Center of Enrichment pro-gram.

“He threw it over the plate,” said Collige, who videotaped Diaz. Ò It was an awesome throw.

“It was pretty memorable. All the kids were excited for Ryan. Everybody was standing on their feet when Ryan was on the fi eld and they put his picture on the Jumbotron.”

Like her student, the occasion marked the fi rst time Collige had ever stepped on the fl oor of a professional stadium. It was as much a thrill for her as it was for Diaz.

“Both of us were on the fi eld,” she said. “It made the hair stand up on my arms. Just knowing he was getting the opportu-nity of a lifetime was precious.Ó

Added Diaz, “That was my fi rst game. It was cool.”The student’s mother, Michelle Diaz, did not know her son

was chosen to throw out the fi rst pitch until that day, so she could not get off of work to join the local contingent.

“I was happy for him and nervous,” she said, adding, “We put the video on Facebook and everybody in New York was so proud of him.Ó

The family, which in-cludes the boy’s father, Derrick Diaz, and his 6-year-old sis-ter Rachel, moved to Zephyrhills from Manhattan in 2011. They are lifelong Yankees fans and plan to attend a Rays-Yankees game lat-er this season.

Ò I guess (the Rays) could be a little challenge for the Yan-kees,Ó said Diaz, who will be a fourth-grader at Taylor.

The afternoon game against the Amer-ican League East rival Toronto Blue Jays proved to be a little too long for the local con-tingent’s taste. Tampa Bay won 7-6 in a 12-in-ning game that lasted nearly four hours with the local students catching the winning run on the monitors as they walked out of the sta-dium.

“We stayed right till the very end,” Col-lige said. “We were walking out with our kids when they fi nally won.Ó

The trip to the Trop was one of several summer fi eld trips taken by the local students, some of whom are West Zephyrhills Elementary schoolchildren enrolled in the PLACE program at Taylor. Additionally, several students from the PLACE pro-gram at Woodland Elementary were at the game as well.

The rare afternoon ball-game was billed as Kids Day with the Rays also welcoming students from recreational and after-school programs in Hills-borough and Pinellas counties.

Among the other fi eld

trips taken by PLACE students this summer were swimming at the Saint Leo University pool, roller skating at AstroSkate in Tar-pon Springs and visiting Withlacoochee State Park in New Port Richey.

The last fi eld trip will by Aug. 16 to watch a movie at the Wesley Chapel Performing Arts Center.

robbery in Valdosta in two years.Authorities used digital billboards across

the Southeast in the manhunt.Among the states that carried the police

messages on digital billboards are Florida, Tex-as, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and New York.

In a joint press conference Monday, Shears and Nocco released the dashboard video of the chase that shows Widener being shot at.

“Maybe use the word ambush. They were trying to hurt this offi cer if not kill him,” Noc-co said. Ò We do know there were points where they slowed down to kill this police offi cer.”

The timeline provided by authorities for the events surrounding the three siblings: On Monday, Ryan Dougherty was sentenced in Volusia County, Florida, to 10 years’ probation

and two years of community control monitor-ing for convictions on two counts of sending harmful information to a minor, the sheriffÕ s of-fi ce said.

After the Monday sentencing, he sent his mother a text message: “There’s a time for all of us to die,” according to the sheriff’s offi ce.

On Tuesday, at 6:30 a.m., a witness saw all three siblings leave in the white four-door ve-hicle from their Lacoochee home. At 6:59 a.m., Ryan Dougherty cut off his GPS monitoring an-kle bracelet near Zephyrhills, the sheriff’s offi ce said.

At 7:12 a.m. Tuesday, the shooting with the Florida police offi cer occurred, in which 20 high-caliber casings were found at the scene, the sheriff’s offi ce said. The fi ve-mile pursuit began after the offi cer tried to pull the vehicle over for speeding on State Road 54.

Then came the armed bank robbery with the FBI also getting tips that the trio had been in Tennessee and Colorado.
