introduction

Augmented reality (AR)is a visualization technology allowing a user to see virtual information add over reality in real time.

A combination of a real scene viewed by a user and a virtual scene generated by a computer.

introduction

Ultimate goal of AR.

e.g., Real desk with virtual lamp and two virtual chairs

introduction

AR system has following three characteristics:

1) Combines real and virtual.

2) Interactive in real time.

3) Registered in 3-D.

Ar vs. VR

Visualization technology allowing a user to see virtual information.

System augments the real world scene.

User maintains a sense of presence in real world.

A computer generated, interactive, three-dimensional environment.

Totally immersive environment.

Visual senses are under control of system.

Augmented Reality virtual Reality

Display technique

Three displays are used… Head mounted display. Handheld display. Spatial display.

Display technique

1) HMD. Two types..

Optical see-through HMD Video see-through HMD

Display technique

2) Handheld Displays : Handheld Augment Reality employs a small computing device with a display that fits in a user's hand.

3) Spatial Displays : Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) makes use of digital projectors to display graphical information onto physical objects.

Applications of AR

Main classes of application:1. Medical.

2. Manufacturing and repair.

3. Robot path planning.

4. Entertainment.

5. Military aircraft.

AR in Video games & military

A company called Total Immersion makes software that applies augmented reality to baseball cards.

Application: manuf & repair

Augmented view of River Wear in Sunderland, Newcastle (U.K.) with a

planned footbridge

VR HUDset used in the wire shop to connect the wires by showing an image of the circuit and information about type

of wire to be used

Application: robot path planning

Virtual lines show planned motion of a robot arm

Application: entertainment

Screenshot from the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” blending the real character and background with

computer generated cartoon characters

Entertainment: virtual actor

Limitation of AR

Objects in the real and virtual worlds have to be properly aligned with respect to each other.

Some applications demand accurate registration., e.g., virtual surgery where error can be fatal!!

AR requires much more accurate registration than VR.

Conclusion

From this session it can be concluded that AR is far behind than virtual reality in maturity.

May be it take too much time to applied in regular life because of cost.

Accuracy is required in success of AR..that is quit difficult.

But still AR has a great future as it promises better interaction with real and virtual world which is previously unimaginable.
