Instead of sharing this bounty with others or putting it to some good use, he decides to tear down his current barn to build an even bigger one to hold the excess. If we are not careful, the desire for more can take over every aspect of our lives, because no, thing will satisfy our deepest huger. Only God can do that. As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless until they can find rest in you.” Lord Jesus, free my heart from all possessiveness and from covet- ing what belongs to another. May I desire you alone as the one true treasure worth possessing above all else. Help me to make good use of the material blessings you give me that I may use them generously for your glory and for the good of others. Vemos esta avaricia en el evangelio de hoy con el hombre rico que se encuentra con una cosecha tan generosa que no puede utilizarlo todo. En lugar de compartir esta recompensa con otros o darle un buen uso, decide derribar su granero actual para construir uno aún más grande para contener el exceso. MINISTRY ASSIGNMENT
We often hear people say, “Enjoy life for we
only have one”. Of course we need to cherish
and enjoy our life. But the gospel cautions us to
be careful too, of misinterpreting this
pleasurable dictum. What are our concerns? Is
it wealth? Fame? Power? A self-centered
manner of enjoying life would make us fools
like the man in the parable. Eat, drink and be merry since you
have everything in abundance. The Lord reminds us to be more
responsible with our life and also of others. Otherwise, if we
are just too obsessed with our material possessions, they
become ends in themselves, and not a means to discover the joy
and beauty of sharing what we have. We are called to be good
stewards of the gifts and resources that God has given us. And
we need to be responsible for, and sensitive to the needs of
others. The Lord calls us from indifference to compassion.
Pope Francis laments the fact that in our world, it seems that
we have lost a sense of responsibility for our brothers and
sisters. The culture of comfort, which makes us think only of
ourselves, makes us insensitive to the cries of other people. He
even uses a metaphor in which he says that this insensitivity
makes us live in soap bubbles which however lovely, are
insubstantial. They offer a fleeting and empty illusion which
results in indifference to others. True, we need to enjoy life.
However, life becomes more enjoyable and meaningful if we
become compassionate, responsible and charitable. We become
aware of others who are in need of our help and assistance. Life
that is shared is always meaningful. Life becomes joyful. In this
way, we become missionaries of the Gospel of joy! Let us be
wise and fools for the Kingdom of God.
DID YOU KNOW? When shouldn’t you be your child’s “friend”? As parents, we want to be close to our children — such closeness is
not to be confused with being our children’s friend, though – our
children need us to be role models, authority figures AND trusted
confidants. This can be a difficult balance to maintain, but we cannot
let our desire to be close to our children blind us to when they need a
strong, reliable adult to tell them what’s right and wrong. Parent/child
relationships are not built on equality like friendships. Parents have
life experience and wisdom that children do not, which gives you more
insight and authority in a given situation. Parents also have the
responsibility to make unpopular decisions in their children’s best
interests, and this is an important responsibility to help your children
