Since the feast days of theo o sisitetes ss arare lessss tthahan a week apart, in the futtwtwoo ure, it might be a goodee fforor aa ppicnic oror something, celebrating both feasts together.tititt mmIII mmmenntitiononeded llast week, one of the topics we worked on out at NotreAsAAsmme this summer was liturgy. Of course, a large component of thatDaDaa priest is preaching, fofof r r which we also spoke extensively about. I
ene d all week in different capacities working on the Sunday homily, spspeeginning the Sunday before by at least looking at the readings andbebegecting on what strikes me. Over the course of the week there’srefl
ayer, stpra udy, and simply wrestling with the readings, discerning what s that I also need to hear when I preach. Oh yeah, and a whole lotit istrust and faith!!of te of the common realities that we all spoke about was the lack of On
eaching we do on “hot button isspre ues”. The basic premise of the mily is based on one simple question, “How does the person’s lifehomnto the paschal mystery?” First off, if you don’t know where the fit itholic Church stands on issues you probably have lived under a Cat
ck. However, probroc ably the biggest reason is that in such aitically charged environment, every person sitting in the pewspolars what they want to hear when it comes to particular issues,s, heaich in turn, only enhances an already stalwart ego, of whihichch the whschal mysterypas invites us to let go!! It would be like feeeedid ng the ast!beaom my own perspective, preaching is the invitation is to change, for Fronversion con - not of someone else - of you. It’s not about ttt chc anging nds, opinions, facts. It’s about changing hearts. Thamin t’s it! It’s not at issues aren’t spoken of, but issues must always be put in their thager context of the most basic premise. We believe from tthehe BooklargGenesis that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, of Gd we are always trying to moveand closer to that by letting go and rrendering ourselves to the mystery. When we simply preach to surues, we end up with only likeissu -minded people and never feel the
al pull of the gospelrea - conversion of heart. If we aren’t doing that, all us as preacof u hers fail ourselves and you.

the weekend of November 16-18, 2017 at The National Catholic Youth Conference!!
“Answer the “Call”. Help our Young People get to
Indianapolis! “Take Stock In Our Youth”
As you can see above, our young people are planning a conference trip to Indianapolis this coming November with the theme of “Called”. We are hoping to raise funds to assist the families for this national, biennial event. The families are working together on a fund-raiser—“Take Stock in Our Youth”. We will be collecting after Mass soon. After our time at NCYC, the young people will host an evening of Dessert—“Responding to the Call” on Friday, December 8th after the Solemnity Mass for the Immaculate Conception. During this gathering, we will enjoy lovely desserts while the young people share the sights and sounds of how their lives were touched by God’s Call to them during the conference. Thank you for ministering to our families through this fundraising opportunity. We look forward to seeing you in August, then spending time together in December!

SOCIAL ACTION MINISTRY The St. Mary’s poor box for the month of August will be donated to Green House Residences at Stadium Place. The Green House Residences serve older adults (62+) who are in need of short-term rehabilitation or long term care. This project is operated in partnership with Catholic Charities. For more information, go to www.gedco.org. The SPX poor box for the month of August will be donated to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, in honor of Rene Gunning. Rene Gunning who passed away a number of years ago in August, had been a parishioner at St. Pius X since its establishment over 50 years ago. He
served on the parish’s Social Justice Committee and was very active in community outreach. Mr. Gunning was an active supporter of Cristo Rey.
This is a way we can honor the memory of a gentleman who was an inspiration to so many of us at SPX. Cristo Rey Jesuit is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory school, empowering students to succeed in college, work, and life. The school embraces low-income families of religious, racial, and ethnic diversity. For more information, go to www.cristoreybalt.org. Van Outreach to the Homeless Volunteers meet on the last Saturday of each month at 4:30pm in the St Mary’s parking lot next to the garages. Consider making a monthly or bimonthly commitment to assist in this effort by contributing sandwiches, soft fruit, individually packaged cookies, or fruit drinks. Help with assembling food bags is also appreciated. Food contributions may be left at the rectory before noon or between 3:30pm-4:15pm on the day of the outreach.
Social Action Ministry will be collecting five different wish list items each quarter to be donated to Our Daily Bread. There are bins in the vestibules in which you may place the following donations:
1. Cereal 2. Sugar 3. Coffee (ground) 4. Coffee Creamer
Napkins
FOOD PANTRY ALERT! GEDCO's CARES Food Pantry is currently running low on the following items: soup, tuna, canned meat, and mac and cheese.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter
“After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.” Help each other hear God’s plan for our marriage better by participating in a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend. The next weekend is on October 27-29, 2017 in Gaithersburg, MD. For more information and to apply online visit: welovematrimony.org, or call 301-541-7007, or email [email protected].
Prayer Walks In response to the seemingly unending violence that has been engulfing our city, different
neighborhoods along York Road have organized Prayer Walks. They invite everyone to join them in this ecumenical effort to pray for peace and an end to the violence. The Woodbourne-McCabe Prayer Walk is every 2nd Friday of the month, meeting at 6:00 pm at the Crown gas station (5101 York Road, across from McDonald’s). The next Walk will be Friday August 11. The Old York Road Prayer Walk is every 3rd Friday of the month, meeting at Old York Road and 39th St in front of the Ellerslie Apts. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring some water!
St. Mary’s is offering a little Rock Scripture Study on the Call of Jeremiah. An extraordinary leader, Jeremiah spoke on God’s behalf using words & significant actions to condemn rampant idolatry in Judah. His prophetic ministry was misconceived & his resulting arrest was the source of personal heartbreak for this profit who revealed a new covenant written on the hearts of God’s people. The study group is 11 weeks, beginning Wednesday, 9/6& concludes on Wednesday 11/15. Meet in St. Mary’s Assumption Room Wednesdays @ 7 pm. Registration is $20 for materials. Contact Dianne McHale ([email protected]) for more information.

Epiphany House Continuing Needs
As many of you know, the elevator at GEDCO's Epiphany House program has been out of order for over a month now. Unfortunately it looks as though the elevator will remain out of order for at least another few weeks so we are still seeking volunteers to help out in 2 hour shifts during the hours of 10am-4pm. There are residents who have needs that include help moving up and down the steps, distributing food, assistance with laundry, picking up mail, taking out trash, errands (picking up medicine or a trip to library), etc. We are also continuing to seek the assistance of out-side groups who may be able to provide meals on weekends for 19 individuals (7 of whom should refrain from eating anything w/ a lot of sodium or sugar). To alleviate some of the burden on our Epiphany residents in the upcoming weeks, we are trying to eliminate the need for these residents (many of whom are disabled) to be going up and down the stairs, making trips to the store, and cooking, especially with the hot, summer conditions. If you can volunteer and/or provide meals for these men and women in need, please contact Valerie Walker at 410-464-0935 for the volunteer slot and/or the meal date and type (lunch or dinner) for which you would like to donate. A GEDCO staff member will contact you in order to coordinate your participation.
