Guardian Angel Cathedral
The Beginnings of Guardian Angel Cathedral Guardian Angel Cathedral is unique not only for its magnificent windows, mosaics, mural and architectural design, but also in its origin and history. Its beginnings go back to 1958, when the priests of St. Viator began the celebration of a 4.30 am Sunday Mass at various hotels on the Strip to accommodate hotel/casino workers and visitors. The present church became a reality in 1963 as “Guardian Angel Shrine.” When the Diocese of Reno became the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas in 1977, the Shrine was designated as Co-Cathedral of the Catholic Church in Nevada. In 1995 the Diocese of Las Vegas was established with Guardian Angel Cathedral as the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in Nevada. At the present time, we have eight masses on the weekend, starting at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, to take care of the pastoral needs of our numerous visitors who wish to fulfill their Sunday obligation, and for whom we are responsible. Back in 1988, Guardian Angel Cathedral received an Indult (special permission) from Rome for this Mass, due to the fact that approximately ninety percent of the participants in our Eucharistic celebrations are visitors from all over the world. To our local parishioners and numerous liturgical ministers, we sincerely thank you for your devoted and dedicated service to the people of God at Guardian Angel Cathedral.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Elijah waits on the mountain for the L to pass by (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a). Second Reading - From the Israelites, with their law and the prophets, comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel - As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33).
The Final Beginning Sanctuary Mural was created by Isabel & Edith Piczek. The artwork seen here is the kind of art which does not want to exist for its own sake. It wants to draw you into a passionately and deeply inner existence, step by step, from the dark original creation into the monumentally recreated world of Man’s Supernature. The Destiny of Man is to unfold in from your eyes, an unfolding which ends in happiness - your happiness. The real artwork is not made from glass, paint or tile. It is created within you—by you. A personal note by the artist
NOTHING TO FEAR A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. “Because God gets lonely for his people” was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today’s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don’t turn to God for saving help until we’re in a bind. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying “Lord, save me!” is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God’s hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the weekend of August 13th you will be asked to give to the Diocese of Las Vegas Rural Parish Appeal Collection. This collection focuses on the rural parishes and missions in our diocese that depend on our generosity to assist them with funding in areas such as evangelization, catechesis, ministry formation, and other areas of faith development. The parishes and missions that benefit from the Rural Parish Appeal are Holy Child in Caliente, Christ of the Desert in Amargosa Valley, St. Patrick’s in Tonopah, St. Barbara’s in Round Mountain, Our Lady of the Valley Mission in Fish Lake and St. Michael’s Mission in McGill. We are fortunate to have priests that travel great distances between these parishes each week to bring Mass to the parishioners. The Rural Parish Appeal helps us to answer some of the needs of these rural areas, but without our assistance these parishes and missions and the Catholic presence in these communities would cease to exist. It is not possible for these churches to meet the financial burdens of upkeep of buildings, utilities and parish activities without your generosity. I ask for your assistance in helping to keep these rural Catholic communities alive by giving generously to this local need. Assuring you of my continued prayers, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas
