As they leisurely shared food and conversation, someone noticed a child in the river, struggling and crying out for help. The child was going to drown! Someone rushed to save the child. Then, they noticed another crying child in the river, and they pulled that child out. Soon, more children were seen drowning in the river, and the townspeople were pulling them out as fast as they could. It took great effort, and they began to organize their activities to save the children as they come down the river. LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, For those of you with children or young adults, this time of year evokes the beginning of school. New schedules, homework and all the other things that go along with the school year come roaring back [or in, if for the first time]. I hope these past opening days of school have gone well for you who have this experience. Patience and a bit of humor are probably the best virtues to acquire. Recently, the Master Plan Committee met with your parish partner representative from the Institute of School and Parish Development, Mr. Bernard DuMond, who shared with us the results of the feasibility assessment regarding the master plan and any future capital campaign. The results were encouraging. I am meeting with the master plan committee again next week to consider the recommendations about how to proceed. I will report to you soon about the results. You may notice that some new work has been done on campus: in front of the Church, the addition to the plaza area. The new paver area and planters were designed to create a focal point for the new walkway which now intersects with the walkway which leads from the side door of Church. The original plans for the Church included such a walkway connection. The planters include an automatic watering system so the plans now have a chance to grow and flourish. There has also been a watering system installed in the new plantings in the School Courtyard. Hopefully, these new plants and trees will grow tall. This weekend is the sign up for the new season of Just Faith. Just Faith is designed to provide a foundation for understanding our catholic heritage regarding social justice teachings. The course is a thorough introduction to this great heritage. Sometimes we may wonder why are there poor people to begin with???? What is their world like? Where is God in all these issues of life that affect people’s human dignity??? Why do Catholics believe what we do about things like poverty, hunger, abortion, immigration, food, water…..? If you would like to explore these and other issues, come be a part of this special offering. Next weekend is our Men’s Christ Renews’ His Parish Retreat. There is still time to register by calling the parish office. Here is a prime opportunity for the men of the parish to grow spiritually as men
with Christ. This Monday, August 15th is the feast of the Assumption of Mary and usually a holy day of obligation. However, in the US, when a Holy Day falls on a Monday, it remains a Holy Day but not one of obligation. SO I encourage you to come to mass on Monday, Aug 15th, 8:30 and we will remember Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Ministry is one aspect of Parish stewardship life which we annually consider in August. Over the past weeks information about ministry stewardship has been given to you through the Bulletin. A special mail out is being sent to each registered family home asking your consideration of ministry in the parish. I urge you to consider one ministry in which you will focus this year in parish ministry. Sometimes our desire to be generous can cause us to take on too much at a time. Considering your other obligations, one ministry for most people is plenty. Please be generous for your own relationship with God-your give-back because of how God’s love for you is so faithful. But, don’t loose yourself in the effort. Ask the Lord to guide your choice. Have a good week ahead. Love,
Introductory Rites For the last two months, we have been preparing for the upcoming changes in the language of the
Mass, which will begin in Advent, by reviewing the liturgical principles that have guided those changes. We have seen that the new language is intended to be a more accurate translation of the Latin from the Roman Missal, offer a more noble tone to our worship and include more imagery and poetry from Scripture. For the next two months, each week we will review a part of the Mass to see what the textual changes will be and explain some of the reasons behind the change in wording. Today we begin with a review of the Introductory Rites.

Please make a prayerful commit-ment and indicate the areas of ministry in which you’d most like to be involved. Your completed card can be placed in the offertory collection next weekend. Our Parish is part of a regional commitment to ministry that stretches back hundreds of years and affects people around the world. Like those who prepared the way, you have been “born in the spirit of faith,” gifted to minister, and prepared to serve others on behalf of Christ. Please share your commitment.

The Introductory Rites include those elements of the Mass that happen before we sit for the First Scripture reading. Today we will examine the changes in these rites, except for the Gloria, which we will review next week. You can find these changes in the booklet in your pew entitled, “Mass of Renewal.” Please turn to page One of the booklet to follow along. After the opening hymn, the priest begins with the Sign of the Cross. The Sign of the Cross and our “AMEN” will not change. The priest will then choose from one of three formulas to greet the people. These greetings, found on page One of your booklet, are all taken from Scripture and alert us to the fact that we are entering a sacred realm in a spirit of prayer. Our response to the greeting will change. Instead of saying, “and also with you,” we will now respond, “AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT.” The greeting and response express the desire that the Holy Spirit be present to the entire community, both priest and people. Next is the Penitential Act. The priest’s introduction to the Penitential Act has changed slightly, as you can see on page One of your booklet. There are three options for the Penitential Act. The first option is found at the top of page Two in your booklet. It consists of the “Confiteor” or “I Confess.” Note that there are significant changes in the language, and the added gesture of striking one’s breast three times during the admission of “through my fault.” Let us read this revised prayer together on page Two. (Gesture for all to join in). “I CONFESS….” (etc.) The second option is the Penitential Dialogue, found at the bottom of page Two. The last line of the priest’s introduction says, “Have mercy on us, O Lord.” Our response is, “FOR WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU.” Then the priest says, “Show us, O Lord, your mercy.” And we respond, “AND GRANT US YOUR SALVATION.” The third option is the traditional, “Lord, Have Mercy” or “Kyrie Eleison” which can either be sung or recited. Toward the end of the Introductory Rites, the Priest sums up our collective prayers in the “Collect” or “Opening Prayer.” All of these prayers have been retranslated and may sound a little different at first. As usual, we will continue to respond to the prayer with our “AMEN.”
