I have no idea who told me but when I moved to Sugar Land in 1996, I was informed

that reading Bev Carter would keep me posted on the real politics of the area. I looked forward to it each week after.

I only saw her in person once but I knew she was an icon sitting in the first row

of a school board candidate forum. When the movie with her opening in reference to Tom Delay played I rushed to see it. I remember my husband and friend choosing a different show in the same theater-Anjelica-but I knew I wanted to see this icon's story of our Congressman.

Recently, the newspaper wasn't thrown in Sugar Mill and I was quite disappointed. Then I was gone all summer traveling and it occurred to me there might be other reasons I hadn't been receiving a paper.

I read this morning about her death. What will I do now to trust someone to tell me what is really going on in Ft. Bend?

To engage the business community is one of the seven goals listed on SMSD's Strategic Vision Plan. Hunting Subsea Technologies, who has had a presence in Stafford since 1968, has stepped up to make this happen. Terry Loudenburg, Community Relations for the District, is used to reaching out to community business leaders for sponsorship for school fundraising events. "What was

nice about this," she said, "was that Hunting contacted me about this school supply drive."

Human Resources Manager, Jennifer Waggoner, created the school supply drive as part of Hunting's "Make an Impact" program. The 162 employees were divided into seven teams and given one month to create a unique container to hold the donated school supplies acquired by members of the team. Hunting Technologies designs, creates, and manufactures

specialty valves, coupling products, and chemical injections used in the oil and gas industry. The sophistication and thoughtfulness that went into each of the completed containers showed exactly why the employees are so good at what they do. Made from various products like wood, cardboard, chalkboards, hinges, and wheels, these containers were painted and colored to make replicas of a school house, a school bus, a giant pencil, a giant crayon box, and three separate cabinets that the teachers will be vying for. The difficult homework assignment for SMSD staff was to choose a winner.

During the tour of the 106K sq.ft.. facility, Cherise Roberts, Career Bridge Counselor for SMSD, and Adrienne Lee, District Librarian, saw potential for students to learn the skills needed to someday work for a company like Hunting. Jake Rutt, a fresh-out-of-technical school twenty year-old, shared how he was able to get a job that allowed him to run the hyperbaric chamber that tests their manufactured parts at the sub-sea level of 15K feet. "I went to aviation technical school. It's the same analytical process." He switched fields because he finds the oil and gas industry to be more stable than aeronautics. Company President, Dane Tipton, gave a digital presentation on their role in offshore technology, adding that he has a "Great team of people. The whole place is passionate."

After a much debate and scoring, first place of the Hunting School Supply Receptacle Contest went to the team who built one of the large cabinets: Congratulations to HSE, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Management, and Purchasing for an A+ job!

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

Foot odor is typically the result of the growth of bacteria combined with excessive perspiration of the feet. It is difficult to eradicate moist conditions of the feet since each foot has 250,000 sweat glands that produce close to one cup of sweat on a daily basis. If you have foot odor, use mild soaps when washing your feet. Do not wear socks that are made with synthetic fibers, and change your socks during the day if possible. Select footwear that provides adequate air circulation, and let your shoes “air out” between wearings. If all else fails, your podiatrist may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics that will eliminate the odor-causing bacteria.

The feet and hands contain more sweat glands than any other part of the body. Smelly feet are not only embarrassing, but can be physically uncomfortable as well. Our practice has been dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of all pediatric, adolescent and adult foot and ankle problems. Located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South, we aim to provide you with an exceptional level of service and outstanding quality of care. We turn to the most advanced treatment for problems of the foot and ankle, always with an understanding and compassionate approach. Call us at 281-980-3668 for an appointment. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: Botox injections may be suggested to stop excessive foot perspiration.

2013 Property Tax Rates in City of Meadows Place

This notice concerns the 2013 property tax rates for City of Meadows Place. It presents information about three tax rates. Last year’s tax rate is the actual tax rate the taxing unit used to determine property taxes last year. This year’s effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This year’s rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers start rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property value.

Last year’s tax rate:

Last year’s operating taxes $ 1,881,533Last year’s debt taxes $ 500,323Last year’s total taxes $ 2,381,856Last year’s tax base $ 266,129,162Last year’s total tax rate $ 0.895000/$100

This year’s effective tax rate:

Last year’s adjusted taxes $ 2,374,763(after subtracting taxes on lost property)÷ This year’s adjusted tax base $ 276,076,310(after subtracting value of new property)=This year’s effective tax rate $ 0.860183/$100(Maximum rate unless unit publishes notices and holds hearings.)

This year’s rollback tax rate:

Last year’s adjusted operating taxes $ 2,131,336(after subtracting taxes on lost property and adjusting for anytransferred function, tax increment financing, state criminal justicemandate, and/or enhanced indigent healthcare expenditures)÷ This year’s adjusted tax base $ 276,076,310=This year’s effective operating rate $ 0.772010/$100x 1.08=this year’s maximum operating rate $ 0.833770/$100+ This year’s debt rate $ 0.168824/$100= This year’s total rollback rate $ 1.002594/$100-Sales tax adjustment rate $ 0.097583/$100=Rollback tax rate $ 0.905011/$100

Statement of Increase/DecreaseIf City of Meadows Place adopts a 2013 tax rate equal to the effective tax rate of $0.860183 per$100 of value, taxes would decrease compared to 2012 taxes by $-7,095.

Schedule A - Unencumbered Fund BalanceThe following estimated balances will be left in the unit’s property tax accounts at the end of the fiscal year. These balances are not encumbered by a corresponding debt obligation.

Type of Property Tax Fund BalanceDebt Service Funds 612,967

Schedule B - 2013 Debt ServiceThe unit plans to pay the following amounts for long-term debts that are secured by property taxes. These amounts will be paid from property tax revenues (or additional sales tax revenues, if applicable).

Schedule C - Expected Revenue from Additional Sales TaxIn calculating its effective and rollback tax rates, the unit estimated that it will receive $269,403 in additional sales and use tax revenues.

Inside Fort BendCongress is in

recess & Olson live with scheduled

town halls

Some in congress appear to have been staying in touch with constituents plugged in via social media during its month long recess this month. But here, Communications Director Melissa Kelly announces that U.S. Rep. Pete Olson will host town hall meetings in Fort Bend County in Katy and Sugar Land to provide a brief legis-

lative update and to hear from constituents. The Katy town hall will be on Thursday, August 29th, 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Seven Lakes High School – FreshmanCenter, 9251 Fry Road, and the one in Sugar Land will be on Tuesday, September 3rd, 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Clements High School, 4200 Elkins Road.

Some say voters need to give Congress an earful during this month’s recess. A report states that House Republicans have been armed with planning kits and pre-dictable statements. It sug-gests turning the tables on elected lawmakers calling them for a lack of leadership.

If you have anything to say, looks like you’ve got an opportunity!

As families enjoy this season of summer fun, Missouri City Fire & Rescue Services reminds residents that August is “Drowning Impact Awareness Month” and has launched a public safety initiative to educate citizens on the importance of practicing the “ABC’s” of water safety:

• A=Always have an adult around. Adult Supervision should be constantly maintained when children are in and around water.

• B=Barriers. Provide multiple layers of barriers that isolate your pool from children; install a fence, gate or swimming pool alarm.

• C=Classes. Enroll your child in swim classes and get basic CPR training.

Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children between 1 and 4 years old and it is the third leading cause of death among children, according to experts.

Statistics show in Texas, 48 children have drowned this year—three of these drowning deaths have been in Fort Bend County while neighboring Harris County accounts for 12.

To help keep your family and friends safe, the Fire Department along with the Texas Drowning Prevention Alliance, shared the following water safety advice:

• Give young children 100 percent of your attention when they are near or around water.

• Empty all tubs, buckets, containers and wading pools immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach.

• Keep toilet lids closed and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning. It’s also a good idea to keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed.

For more information about safety in and around the water, click on www.missouricityready.com and watch a video featuring Asst. Fire Chief Paige Day.

At their Aug. 5 meeting, City Council Members proclaimed August “Drowning Impact Awareness Month”. During the meeting, Mayor Allen Owen, above right, presented a proclamation on the issue to Asst. Fire Chief Paige Day, at left. As part of the City’s citizen outreach initiative on the issue, individuals are asked to wear a “purple” awareness ribbon to symbolize their support; a limited supply is available at City Hall, 1522 Texas Pkwy.

The Skeeters started off slowly on Monday night, holding a slim 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before they erupted for eight runs in the next three innings to push the lead up to 9-0.

The Skeeters really had the bats clicking, racking up 14 hits including a solo homerun from Aaron Bates and a three-run homerun from Eduardo Perez. Ben Kozlowski was terrific in his first start of the season, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and allowed just

one hit in his five innings of work. After Kozlowski’s five scoreless innings Gary Gaetti relied on the trusty Skeeters bullpen to finish things off.

Skeeters notes:• Ben Kozlowski: 5IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, 2 K• Adam Godwin: 3-5, R• Jeff Dominguez: 3-4, 2B, RBI, R• Aaron Bates: 1-4, HR, RBI, 2R• Eduardo Perez: 1-4, 3 RBI, RSkeeters Bullpen (Wells,

Marshall, Corcoran, Miller): 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 5K

Skeeters continue duck hunt with 10th shutout of the year

Managing Daytime SleepinessNarcolepsy is a sleep disorder with a pattern of severe daytime

sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks. People with this condition struggle to stay awake for a long period of time; this can cause significant difficulties in school and work on a daily basis. The classic feature of narcolepsy is sleep attack episodes that come on sudden, are short in duration, and may occur in the middle of a task. Other characteristics sometimes include the uncontrolled loss of muscle tone (cataplexy), the inability to move or control the body whole sleeping (sleep paralysis), and hallucinations.

While there is no cure for narcolepsy, there are many medications available to help treat the symptoms. Stimulants are a class of medications that help keep the brain alert during the day. Modafinil (Provigil) and armodafinil (Nuvigil) are often started before methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) because they are less addictive and better tolerated. To help control cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations, a special class of anti-depressants alter chemicals in the brain to help make a per-son less sleepy. Medications that belong to this class include fluoxetine (Prozac) and venlafaxine (Effexor XR). Tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine (Tofranil) may help reduce cataplexy.

The Conservative Voice

By Barbara J. Carlson

You understand why Senator Cruz criticized Senator Coburn, you know, the guy who blocked Katherine Archuleta’s national political director nomination until a 75% Obamacare subsidy—from us—was approved to offset Congressional lawmakers and their aides’ costs? Aides receive anywhere from $70-174K/year but they “can’t afford” the law that they helped write and have now thrust on us.

Grasping Tyranny Yet?

are “racially imbalanced,” intending to “integrate communities”—solely based on the Dept’s assumption—coined the “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.” This tyrannical agenda is only up for a 60-day public comment period. As usual, the policy is “unclear”—like Obamacare and the upcoming amnesty bill. Taxpayers would fund this racial and ethnic “integration.” No other country dictates where its citizens live.

The Left’s tyrannical rule is coming at us at morph speed while the Republican-majority House is sitting on its laurels.

The Democrats and RINOs desperately need the low-information voter. Detroit failed simply because it’s been run by the Liberal Left since 1957 that embraces the all-too-

common flawed philosophy of massive unions, massive unfunded pensions and wide-sweeping welfare, which never works. It’s a virtual impossibility to eradicate poverty by creating dependency—a lesson that the Democrats refuse to grasp.

How can the Republican Party win back the Senate and the Presidency? Stop interpreting “compromise” as time to cave in—again—and nominate courageous, rock-solid Conservative Constitutionalists who know how to negotiate! Pure and simple.

This Congress isn’t the “Do Nothing Congress” but the most corrupt, lawless and unconstitutional Congress ever.

So while Lindsey Graham refuses to host a summer town

It is unconstitutional and illegal to implement selective and discretionary law—and these guys know it!

Where will this 75% subsidy be buried so that the taxpayer forgets? Deep in the Office of Personnel Management.

Meanwhile, the Dept of Housing and Urban Development is working on permanently changing our neighborhoods because they

hall—and will cowardly refuse to debate Nancy Mace—watch our representatives crawl home to align themselves with potential winners because they know they have done the American people dirty. Constituents have wised up. Simply holding town halls and dodging the upcoming amnesty bill questions, Congress’ unconstitutional and illegal subsidies and why they’re

selling America out while trying to divert attention back to the Keystone Pipeline—which isn’t happening under this administration so move on—and the rhetorical whining that “it’s all Obama’s fault” that you funded, holding the purse strings…well, that just doesn’t cut it.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS

Long time broker/realtor Wayne Stone passed away Monday nightWayne Stone, a long time

Broker/Realtor (19+ years) in Fort Bend County, passed away on Monday evening, August 12. He was the owner of Wayne Stone Properties located in Pecan Grove on FM 359. Arrangements will be forthcoming. Check the web site @ FortBendStar.com for more information as it comes available. Wayne Stone

One in 50 school age children are diagnosed with autism. If autism has not affected your family, the odds are, you know someone or a family, who has been impacted. The autism spectrum knows no barrier to skin color, gender, language spoken, age or wealth.

At Travis High School in Fort Bend County, students did not see autism as a barrier when they elected L'Air Robertson, who has autism, as their Prom Queen. “This is exactly what the Hope for Three It's Cool to Care Program is designed to do - educate, empower and enable youth to make positive contributions to the lives of other young people with unique differences – autism”, said Bill Roy, Hope for Three Board Member and It's Cool to Care Ambassador.

It took the acceptance and

understanding of several students to not only encourage the nomination of L'Air, but to rally their fellow students to support her and make the idea of becoming Prom Queen possible. It is this kind act of inspiration that has earned Travis students Hope for Three's Caring Friends Award.

The students recently received the honor in a ceremony this summer. Travis High School is one of many schools in Fort Bend that have participated in the It's Cool to Care Program.

For more information on how Hope for Three can bring the program to your school and share why autism acceptance, awareness, and understanding is important for the greater good of the community, call 1-800-317-0787 or visit www.hopeforthree.org.

Travis High School students earn Caring Friends Award

On hand for the Caring Friends Award Ceremony are pictured left to right, Ronnie Edwards (Travis Associate Principal), L'Air Robertson (Travis High 2013 Prom Queen), Alexis McGhee, Bria Davis, Shelby Peterson, Denzell Clarke, Hannah Przybilla, Heather Grant (Travis High Students and graduates), Jennie Bailey (FBISD Board Member), Darla Farmer (Hope for Three Founder), Bill Roy (Hope for Three Board Member) and JJ Kyle (Travis High Principal). Not pictured are Travis High School graduates, Amanda Hammond, Kristin Talactic and Kaylen Wolfe.

Congratulations to Shelby Salge, a New Territory resident, for earning her Girl Scout Silver Award. Shelby is a member of Rainbow Stars Service Unit, Troop 3009 led by Julie Angle and Lynn Belgen.

Her community service project centered around creating activities for children to be used in waiting rooms of area doctors offices and hospitals. After interviewing many of the doctors and administrators of these facilities, the feedback was that these activity packages would not only entertain but also help educate children during their time in the waiting rooms.

It has been exciting for Shelby

Shelby Salge earns Girl Scout Silver Awardto see that the facilities have implemented the use of these activities and the children have really been enjoying them.

Sugar Land Police now have photos of a pair of men who went all the way to North Houston to pawn goods stolen from a Telfair home. It all started on July 10 when a woman heard her neighbor’s home alarm at about noon. The witness told officers she saw a man wearing a blue shirt climbing over a backyard wall carrying a television, said Sugar Land Police spokesman Doug Adolph. Adolph went on to explain that shortly thereafter a motorist in the area

also saw the man climb over the wall with the television. That suspect fled in a black four-door car that was parked on New Territory Boulevard.

That stolen television was later tracked to a pawn shop on the north side of Houston, said Adolph. Sugar Land Police have obtained and released pawn shop surveillance photos of the two men who pawned the television. Interestingly one man is wearing a blue t-shirt that just happens to match the description of the burglary suspect’s shirt as described by witnesses.

Earlier this month sheriff’s dispatchers received a call from a man that there was going to be a suicide on Oak Dale street, in Stafford. As the caller was questioned by 911 operators, the caller got angry and said he had a gun to his face and disconnected the call.

Sheriff’s deputies and Stafford Police officers responded to Oak Dale and found the homeowner who said her son, 21 year old Miguel Ceballos, was out of control. She explained that he was inside the home intoxicated, with a carbine to his head.

While law enforcement

personnel were gathering information about the situation and home, Miguel Ceballos opened the front door of the home holding a shot gun.

Ceballos was ordered to put the weapon down and come out of the residence. According to a sheriff’s spokesperson, Ceballos cursed the deputies and slammed the door shut. Shortly thereafter, all the lights inside the house went out.

During efforts to communicate with Ceballos, he would open the front door or the overhead garage door, threaten, cuss, and then retreat to the back of the home. As the situation wound to an end, Ceballos came out of the house

Mental health or crime? Subject keeps police on stand-byand into the garage carrying a shot gun. He went over and got into a pick-up truck parked in the driveway still toting his shot gun, started the truck, and drove at a high rate of speed out of the driveway and into a sheriff’s patrol car positioned

at the end of the drive. Several deputies were

standing behind this vehicle when it was struck. While crashed into the patrol unit, Ceballos continued to accelerate the truck in reverse. “In fear for their lives, and for

the safety or others, deputies fired several shots. Miguel was struck three times in the shooting and taken into custody,” said Terriann Carlson, spokesperson for the sheriff.

Miguel Ceballos was taken to Memorial Hospital

in downtown Houston where he was treated for non- life threatening wounds. He was later released from Memorial Herman Hospital and booked into the Fort Bend County Jail on four counts of aggravated assault on a public servant.

with city council and city staff has not received council’s input on recommended propositions for the bond election,” said Vasut.

Another concern, according to Vasut, was that the city had not prepared a campaign to educate citizens on the various bond proposals.

The $12.5 million bond measure would have included 10 projects including downtown sidewalks, a nature center at Seabourne Creek Park and additional security cameras around the city.

Memorial Park."Tim DeRosa, who served on

a hike and bike sub-committee, is worried that the language in the hike and bike portion of the bond is too vague. He says the sub-committee was very specific in plotting out which segments

needed to be a priority and which ones could wait.

"I'm concerned about the part that says, 'a system of trails and other improvements'", DeRosa said. "I want the language improved so voters know what they are paying for and when

they will get it."Council member Harish Jajoo

told the council that he had received some phone calls from residents who were concerned that the current design plan for the festival site did not include restrooms.

Assistant City Manager Karen Daly said the festival committee recommended only what is available in the current lease agreement with the University of Houston.

"Should we be able to add more as we hope to do in different phases of lease agreements, we'd be able to look at the construction of something verticle," said Daly.

The Sugar Land City Council plans to officially call for the bond measure to be on the November ballot on August 20.

check, the daily pay, which is compensation for the time of doing one’s civic duty.

“The issue is that we currently pay our jurors by checks, 21 percent of the checks never clear, which gave an indication that it is not an efficient way from a juror’s perspective for payment since they are choosing not to redeem payment,” Sturdivant told commissioners. He also told commissioners that the majority of the checks are for six dollars and “do create a burden to manage.”

In spite of the doubling of the cost to pay jurors, Sturdivant said “we expect a

redemption rate of 95 percent plus,” based on the feedback from payment processors, which are credit card companies. “So, (it’s) a more efficient process to pay our jurors,” he said.

“But the reason that we are willing to go from an $11,000 expense to a $24,000 expense is that (for) the $11,000 expense in order to meet all the auditing requirements,” queried Precinct 4 Commissioner James Patterson, is that “you have to have a lot of staff,” and “this other way, there is no staff involved,” and “we feel that we will save that differential.”

“And other resources in the county,” added Sturdivant.

“Otherwise, there’s no reason to do this,” further queried Commissioner Patterson. Both of his statements were affirmed by Sturdivant.

One Fort Bend County resident, aware of the newly authorized system costing over twice as much up front than the former one asked, “why can’t the county just give out the six dollars in cash to jurors when they leave the first day of jury duty when they weren’t picked?” Although it may sound like a simple solution, would it work?

Sturdivant said, “We are actually looking at a couple of options right now.” So there still may be time for yet another more efficient solution.

Comcast was not sure if the train was too high or the cable too low, but the line was severed. After that line was cut it swung into a power line, causing disruption there as well.

The placement of an operational ring system was discussed, but that would only help reroute city properties, not homeowners. Councilman Robert

Sorbet mentioned that in the last six months there has been a disruption in his Comcast service lasting anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours. Councilman Cecil Willis suggested that they invite a representative from Comcast to a future council meeting.

Powers Brown Architecture, E.E. Reed Construction, Pinnacle Structural Engineers and Meadow Burke are also donating design and construction services to the project.

The design, which is still being finalized, features a five sided, triangular shaped structure on the lake. Visitors will access the memorial by entering a concrete gate and crossing over a bridge.

“The five walls symbolize the five branches of the military,” said Jeffrey Brown of Powers Brown Architecture. “Light will shine on all of the walls, eventually shining on

the name of someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

The cost of the project could increase, once the final design and construction costs are determined. The plan is to have the project finished by late September.

Sugar Land Legacy Foundation launches capital campaign

The Sugar Land Legacy Foundation worked with TCA to get the Veterans Memorial project off the ground. The non-profit group, which was started in 2010 as a way for the City to help pay for smaller quality of-life projects, is hoping to increase its visibility in the coming months.

The organization is

launching a capital campaign to raise about $155,000 for the Universally Accessible Playground planned for First Colony Athletic Park. The total project cost is $400,000.

The Foundation received $36,900 from the Fort Bend Junior Service League’s Charity Ball, almost $7,400 in other donations and the City of Sugar Land has earmarked $200,000 for the project.

“This is a small capital campaign but we’re hoping it will be a good first step in raising general awareness of the foundation,” said Jennifer May, Assistant to the City Manager.

The Legacy Foundation also recently received $28,000 from

Sugar Land resident Samuel Levin, to put four sculptures in Oyster Creek Park. The sculptures feature people

sitting on a bench, children skateboarding, children playing and an alligator. The sculptures will be installed in the fall.

The foundation also collected a $15,000 donation to help pay for improvements to the Eldridge Park Trail.

parking, a marquee sign and additional amenities.

The city will be responsible for construction and as announced, by September 23, it will select an architect, who will design the project during the next 12-month period. Facility construction will begin in 2014, and is expected for completion two years later.

Last year, the Sugar Land City Council approved and signed a letter of intent among the city, the Sugar Land Development Corporation, and ACE Theatrical for transaction plans relating to project location, lease agreements, a financing plan, closing deadline and other conditions for the project.

Groomsmen included the bride’s brother, Andrew Sels-er of Durango, Colorado, as well as friends Joshua Levine of San Diego, California, Daniel Barbey of Minneapolis, Minne-sota, Michael Glover of Seattle, Washington, and Christopher Brophy of Durango, Colorado.

The bride wore a stunning Modern Cinderella ball gown, as if picked right out of a storybook, from the Alfred Angelo Dis-ney Fairytale Bridal Collection, featuring a dramatic, cathedral length veil and elegant tiara.

Courtney and Gary would like to thank Todd and Bonnie Barbey for allowing their special day to take place at the beau-tiful Bar Bay Ranch. They would also like to thank the many family members and friends that traveled from Texas, Okla-homa, New Mexico, Washington, California and Minnesota to attend the wedding and associated festivities. We love you all!

Following a honeymoon trip to Seattle, Washington, the couple will reside in Durango, Colorado.

Did anyone hear the roar coming from Austin High School on the 8th of August? It was the freshman orientation pep rally. Before starting their first day of classes at Austin High School, upcoming freshman were given the opportunity to get all questions answered and to see how exciting high school really is. The ninth-graders thanks to help from AHS Link Crew are already equipped with some helpful tips for surviving high school.

AHS Link Crew is a school community-building program. As positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators, leaders and teachers who guide freshmen, and new students, to discover what it takes to be successful in high school. A year with Link Crew begins

with a spirited and interactive 9th grade orientation at the start of the school year. After the orientation, the Leaders lead their crew of freshmen through a series of fun, positive activities designed to help them all get to know each other as well as learn important campus information.

The day-long event included the pep rally, team building events, a tour of the school, breakout sessions, and a club fair in the gym, of course who could forget the pizza lunch. Seeing as Link Crew's goal is to provide schools with a structure in which students make real connections with each other, thus increasing school safety and reducing the incidence of bullying through anti-bullying education, this goal at AHS is on its way to being achieved.
