Blessed with God’s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity.
By Jesus Christ’s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy.
As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.

We gather at your table, Lord, because you bid us come. Our lives, though scattered through the week, we now unite as one. Before us is the bread, the wine; prepare our souls to eat. Come join us by your Spirit, Lord, and make the feast complete.
*Call to Worship Happy are those who walk in God’s way with unwavering steps. They go from strength to strength, ever singing God’s praise. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly. Their hearts are filled with hope as they journey with their Maker.

*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
God of hope, we confess our disregard of your creation, our doubt of your providence, and our disrespect of our neighbors. We too easily separate ourselves from you and from others, and we foster divisions between those you love. Have mercy on us. Help us to amend our lives, so that we might be your faithful people who bear the good fruit of your Word in the world; through Jesus Christ we pray. (time for silent confession)
And let God’s people say: Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness
*The Peace of Christ
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.
*Sung response (hymn 447)
We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. (repeat)

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee
A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
August 14, 2016 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Anthem Dona Nobis Pacem Lightfoot
Blessing of the Backpacks
Gracious God, we lift to you today these students and educators. They stand here ready to receive your blessing as they commit themselves to the study, learning, and fun that a new school year brings. We ask your blessing on each of them. Further, we ask your blessing on these backpacks. They will hold the school work of each student and will be carried from home to school and back again. As these students carry these backpacks, may they be reminded of the love and care of this congregation that surrounds them each school day. We pray as well for the teachers and administrators in our schools, and those who teach in our communities. May they also be sustained by your blessing. May they be reminded that this congregation embraces their call to teaching and learning, and surrounds them with love and care. We pray in the name of Jesus who we seek to follow day by day. Amen.
(Children, grades two and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to activity time.)

*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC) We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We give thanks to you, creating God, breath of all being … to join the song of all creation and forever sing your praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We give you thanks, O God, that you sowed your Word in Jesus … Creating God, in songs of endless praise, now and forever. Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup
Sharing of the Elements
[Elders will serve you at your seat. We eat the bread (all gluten-free) together to symbolize the unity we share in Christ. We receive the cup as individuals to acknowledge the personal need for forgiveness by God’s grace.]
Prayer after Communion God of grace, you have renewed us at your table with the bread of life. May we now go forth in the strength of your love to serve you in one another; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES
Our anthem this morning is a simple and lovely
setting of the Latin phrase 'Dona Nobis Pacem'
(grant us peace) by Mary Lynn Lightfoot. The
vocal lines move together, sometimes independ-
ently, weaving a warm, expressive texture. This
phrase has its origin in the Agnus Dei (Lamb of
God) section of the Roman Catholic mass, and has
been used in many musical settings outside of its
original context.
Blessing of the Backpacks—This morning we
are offering a blessing of the backpacks for our
students and teachers. This is a tradition that our
church embraces which reminds us to support,
stand with, and pray for our students and
community educators throughout the year. We
are also commissioning those from within our
congregation who are graciously volunteering
their time and talents to be our Sunday School
teachers this year.
