TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophe c response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jere-miah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The au-thor of the Le er to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can s ll persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who him-self knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of si ng at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a bap-
sm that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and an-guish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly sooth-ing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficul es of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assur-ance of our own salva on in Christ.

The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin - On August 15, Catholics and many other Chris ans celebrate the feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950, invoking papal infallibility to proclaim, “that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” His Apostolic Cons tu on “Munificen ssimus Deus” (Most Boun ful God), which defined the dogma, contained the Pon ff's accounts of many longstanding tradi ons by which the Church has celebrated the Assump on throughout its history. The cons tu on also cited tes monies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflec on on many Biblical passages which are seen as indica ng that Mary was assumed into heaven following her death. Although the bodily assump on of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradi on iden fies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revela on. The passage calls that woman's appearance “a great sign” which “appeared in heaven,” indica ng that she is the mother of the Jewish Messiah and has “the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” Accordingly, Catholic iconography of the Western tradi on o en depicts the Virgin Mary's assump on into heaven in this manner. Eastern Chris ans have also tradi onally held Mary's assump on into heaven as an essen al component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzan ne liturgical texts, as well as the eighth-century Arab Chris an theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authorita ve defini on of her assump on. “It was fi ng,” St. John of Damascus wrote in a sermon on the as-sump on, “that she, who had kept her virginity intact in childbirth, should keep her own body free from all corrup on even a er death,” and “that she, who had carried the creator as a child at her breast, should dwell in the divine tabernacles.” In Eastern Chris an tradi on, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormi on (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebra on of the Dormi on is pre-ceded by a two-week period of fas ng which is similar to Lent. Pius XII, in “Munificen ssimus Deus,” men oned this same fas ng period as belonging to the tradi onal patrimony of Western Chris ans as well. ~ Catholic News Agency
Because the feast of the Assump on 2016 falls on a Monday, the precept to a end Mass is abrogated. – that means it is not a holy day of obliga-
on this year – but a ending Mass is always encouraged.
NOTE: The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin (Aug. 15) is NOT a Holy Day of obliga on this year.
