By Elsa Maxey The good news is that FBISD reports it has contracted with ATC Associates to perform air qual- ity tests at Austin High School. The results are due soon and the school district advises that they will be posted on the Austin High School’s website. Over the summer, Nancy Porter, FBISD Communications Director, said Austin High School replaced its air conditioning tow- ers. She said there were interrup- tions to the A/C service and only one of three chillers was being used to cool the building. That explains the warm conditions in the school building while a sum- mer class was underway. By Aug. 1, Porter reports that all three chillers were fully opera- tional and a suspect material, she called it, was reported in the band room and band uniforms the week of Aug. 1. She said, “appropriate cleaning measures were taken as verified in the Texas Department of State Health Services inspec- tor’s report,” the result of an inspection on Aug. 4. Both the inspector and the spokesperson for the state agency told the "Star" that mold was found, albeit “here and there” in small areas. This is allegedly due to cleaning by dis- trict staff before the state inspec- tion, maintains a school taxpayer and eye witness to the clean-up. Porter said someone filed a complaint with the Texas Department of State Health Services, which is probably what triggered the mold inspection at the school. An eye witness who saw him a matter of a few feet away said it was Attorney Jose Baez. She said he was walking in and out of the airport dressed in an orange shirt and khaki shorts. In plain view of TV camera crews from the media photographing him, he reportedly said he wanted some privacy and was looking for a restaurant. Any guesses about his coming over to see Anthony, who possibly could be in hiding in our part of the state? According to news accounts, Anthony vanished from public view since being released from prison last month following her acquittal on murder charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter. Reports from Florida indi- cate that Anthony must return to Orlando no later than Aug. 26, at noon to serve a year's probation for check fraud. Casey Anthony in Sugar Land? By Elsa Maxey With the intense heat and drought this summer, there has been some noticeable, decreased mosquito activity. But the pres- ence of the pests is known big- time now with a sample of West Nile virus that was reported last week. Fort Bend County Health and Human Services said a mosquito sample from the Fresno area tested positive for the disease-causing virus. It is the first positive sample in Fort Bend County in several years, according to the agency’s spokesperson Melanie Manville in a media release. The county’s Road and Bridge Department has intensi- fied mosquito spraying in the area, also using a larvacide to prevent mosquitoes from hatch- ing. It will continue preventive efforts until a negative sample is obtained. The escalated spray- ing is being targeted at ditches and drains, areas that hold water. Health authorities cau- tion residents to take personal responsibility in and around their homes. They are being told not to rely solely on mosquito spraying by the county or cit- ies. That’s because the spray may not reach backyards due to obstructions such as fences and even other homes that may prevent the spray from reaching those area. The announcement about Gaetti’s selection was made last week. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” said Gaetti about enjoying the teaching and coach- ing aspect of the game. “There is no better place to do that than right here in Fort Bend County,” said the 2004-06 Astros full- time hitting coach after serving three seasons in Houston’s minor league system. Gaetti is reported to have been Houston’s hitting guru when the Astros played for the 2004 National League pen- nant and in 2005, when the Astros made their first-ever World Series appearance. Why it’s the new Justice Center across the street from the jail on Ransom Road where Fort Bend taxpay-ers have just spent around $75-80 million to have all the courts in one building. That includes a next-door, several-story parking garage, which allows plenty of covered parking for judges, juries and all matter of employees.

The county wasn’t able to give employees a raise this year, and yet we have judges who want a cover for their cars, which they probably don’t park in their garag-es at home in the first place.

It would cost about $400,000 to pave some more land and cover it for their cars.

There have been complaints that the parking garage is always full. This may be the case but if the judges would agree to call panels of jury on more than one day a week, there would be suf-ficient parking.

Then the judges point out there is not sufficient security in the parking garage. If they would take off their “state judge” license plates from their vehicles, it might be safer. Nobody would know who drove what vehicle.

And if the Justice Center park-ing garage isn’t safe right across from the sheriff’s department, I

don’t know what will be. A side note to every judge

being in the new Justice Center is that all judges are now housed in the same building and any judicial antics are exposed to all there. Judge Bud Childers, who we have written about before, is showing his true self. The way I heard it, he came storming out his court-room, black robes flying, making him look for all the world like an avenging hound of hell, busting into another judge’s office and telling them to get quiet because it was disturbing him!

Judge Childers, who we’ve often called “Bud Lite” has here-tofore been in a building all by himself. Now his peers will get to witness his actions.

Water rationing.....Looks like all the cities are getting around to mandatory water rationing. It’s about time and I think it should have been done earlier. Most have had voluntary water rationing and we know how that works.

Pumping all of the water from the ground without a replenish-ing rainfall causes subsidence and I’ve already noticed a cracked tile in my kitchen. I suspect my foun-dation is sinking.

This rainfall amount is about the worse I’ve ever seen in Fort Bend. I lived through the drought in West Texas in the 50s when my daddy burned through all our college money trying to keep his cows alive. It resulted in my mother eventually having to open a beauty shop to send my brother and me to college. (Heaven forbid that we ever did a lick of work!) Of course, there wasn’t a lot of jobs for young people then either. It was before the fast food era.

We had such dust storms we

had to hang wet sheets on our doors and windows to protect us during the worst of it. We could see the dust storms com-ing across the flat land, big red or black swollen clouds according to which way the wind was blowing. I swear I saw Lubbock blow by one day.

I remember when the drought was finally broken. My daddy stayed up all night, eating popcorn and looking out the window. I asked mother why he stayed up all night and she said he was afraid if he took his eyes off the rain, it would stop. It took us a long time to recover from that era, both our land and us, mentally.

I keep hearing.....disturbing things about the city justice sys-tem in Stafford. A person called me this week, and it’s not the first complaint I’ve heard about this very thing, and was disturbed that he had asked for a jury trial in traffic court and it had been reset four times. That makes me and the complainant think they are just trying to wear him down and get him to pay the fine and go away.

This person said not only was the judge insulting, but the pros-ecutor was as well. This person told me he had to take off work every time he had a court date, only to get there and it be reset. The person said they would never spend another penny in Stafford and tell their friends the same. This person said he knew that times were tough and cities were trying to increase revenue, but he said the ticket he got was so egre-gious he decided to fight it and he had the video to prove his case.

This person was so upset about the latest reset, he looked me up on the newspaper website and

called me about it. Like I said, this is not the first

time I’ve gotten this complaint. Kudos.....You probably read

in this newspaper that Classic Chevrolet recently won some big award as the “dealership of the year.” I want to take a little space right here to tell you about how Don Kerstetter took over that dealership, which had a terrible reputation when it went by anoth-er name. A relative young man, Don still had lots of experience

in the car business, and he took over that dealership determined to make it successful.

He moved his family here and put a lot of hard work and deter-mination into doing just that and it has yielded the right results. Don always has a happy smile, always is upbeat about not only his car dealership and the car business, but Fort Bend County in general. Anything you ask him to do, he tries to make it happen and usu-ally does.

I’m just saying that in a few short years, he has revived a deal-ership that was mired in bad feel-ings and he has been able to get the whole community pulling for him. And why besides hard work and determination? Because he is just a nice person.

We’re Here! We’re Here!

I'm Sick and Tired...I’m sick

and tired of the Social S e c u r i t y r e c i p i e n t s saying ‘they paid into it, so they are entitled to receive it.’

I hate to break this news to you, but you are not entitled to one cent. You did not pay into anything. You merely paid a tax. Yes, it can

be broken out on your pay stub separately but that does not mean doodle squat.

That amount itemized on your pay stub is not placed into an account with your name on it. Therefore it is a tax - plain and simple. That is the amount you are taxed to give freebees to senior citizens. That amount is not figured based on what it will cost to put food on your table when you turn 62. It is the amount needed to provide money to TODAY’S seniors.

That amount is deducted from your check because our politicians have promised to give every single person 62-years-old or older approxi-mately $1,200 per month for the rest of their natural lives. In other words, that is the tax you have to pay for the politicians to keep getting the seasoned citizen vote (vote buying).

The first year that Social Security was established, ben-efits were paid for an average of five years. Today, the aver-age payout is 20 years. Where in the U.S. Constitution does it say that workers should pay for any individual’s retirement lifestyle for any length of time?

Of course when Social Security was established by the Social-ist, Franklin D. Roosevelt, working people probably only had to pay a dollar a month TAX to pay for those current retired persons

that were only going to live five more years.

Social Security was sup-posed to be a safety net, not a retirement plan. Since it was established, forward-looking, hard-working Americans have discovered this thing called the 401K, which is a retirement plan. That is supposed to pay for food on your table, your RV, your other travel plans, etc. So, why are we paying those seasoned citizens that did plan for retirement a Social Security check?

In the not too distant future we won’t. In fact I hear political pundits bring it up frequently.

This is known as means-testing and this is the future of the Social Security program. The first thing a retired per-son will start squealing like a stuck pig is ‘I paid into the system, so I am entitled to get a check’. Relax! This won’t go

into effect for anyone on social security or anyone 40 or older.

As I stated earlier, you paid a tax and that tax should not and will not (when they even-tually start means-testing) ben-efit those of us that chose to establish a retirement plan that does not rely on a $1,200 check each month, courtesy of current workers. In other words, you will not be able to opt-out of Social Security and provide for your own retirement. We will all have to pay the TAX but if you have a well-funded retire-ment plan, then you don’t get a Social Security check.

You see, they say we will have an effective tax rate of over 90% in about 20 years in order to pay social security and Medicare benefits to every retired person at the same rate we pay today. That is not going to happen.

Either we slash every-

body’s social security benefits DRAMATICALLY or we only hand it out to those that really need a safety net. If benefits are slashed enough to keep everybody on the dole, then the people that truly need a safety net will not receive enough to keep them from eat-ing dog food.

Meet Shane Mize: Missouri City’s new Recreation Superintendent is the proud win-ner of the 2011 Texas Recreation & Parks Society Young Professional Award for his excep-tional achievements in the profes-sion. The coveted prize is given to one young professional 35 years old or younger who is actively involved in TRAPS through lead-ership roles and the promotion of parks and recreation in published articles and research projects.

Mize joined Missouri City in January 2011. He holds a B.B.S. in Sports, Fitness and Leisure Management from Hardin-Simmons and has a M.S. in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration from Western Illinois University.

Mize currently serves on the NRPA Program Committee and as the Chair-Elect of NRPA’s Young Professional Network; he was featured in the May 2010 NRPA Parks and Recreation Magazine as a “Future Leader in our Field”.

“We feel very fortunate to have Shane on staff to head the Recreation Division,” said Missouri City Parks & Recreation Director Larry Foos. “Shane has

a diverse background in provid-ing recreation programs and we appreciate his efforts, work ethic and enthusiasm in providing qual-ity programs and events for our citizens.”

Mize’s experience and exper-tise has resulted in the introduc-tion of many new programs for residents, including these: • Fun Fridays • Special Population Programming—fitness activi-ties for youths and adults • Free Fishing Day • Texas Nature Challenge • A blog on the Parks & Recreation web page.

The blog will include informa-tion and updates on recreation programs and activities and will feature follow-up pictures and reports. The goal is to provide an interactive communications tool to receive feedback from citizens.

Sugar Land Police asking for public assistance in robbery case By LeaAnne Klentzman

Sugar Land Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the man wanted for a home inva-sion robbery in the Ashford Lakes subdivision in late July.

Police have i d e n t i f i e d one suspect, D e m a r c u s Johnson, a 2 0 - y e a r - o l d Houston man, in connection with an aggra-vated robbery in

the Ashford Lakes subdivision. According to authorities, Johnson should be considered armed and dangerous. He has the roman numerals five and nine tattooed on the front of his neck.

Johnson is wanted in connec-tion with a July 22 afternoon rob-bery where a group of black men forced entry through the back door of a home in the 12000 block of Ashford Green Court. During their crime spree a 19-year-old woman told police she was held at gun point by one man while others went through the house looking for money. When the ransacking

Demarcus Johnson

and looting was over, reportedly at least six intruders left the woman and fled the scene in a newer model sedan loaded with the family’s elec-tronics and other valuables.

The man who held the teen at gunpoint was described as tall, wearing a long sleeve white t-shirt and black workout pants. He reportedly asked the victim for the specific location of money they believed was in the house. A second suspect was described as wearing a brown short sleeve t-shirt and was carrying a large tote bag. He was described as thin and bald. Yet another suspect was

described as short and muscu-lar, wearing a short sleeve navy t-shirt and jeans. He appeared to be 20-25 years old with a square face, thin beard, and short hair. He had big eyes, a flat and wide nose and visible nostrils and also had a large carry-on bag.

Anyone with information should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2540. Tips can also be provided to Fort Bend Crime Stoppers, Inc. at 281-342-TIPS (8477), by text messag-ing CRIMES (274637) or online at www.fortbend-tx-crimestop-pers.org.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Proud Nursing Team.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is pleased to announce it has achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the ele-ments of work environments where nurses can flourish. The designation substantiates the pro-fessional satisfaction of nurses at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and identifies it as one of the best places to work in the country.

“This recognition represents a great deal of hard work and a true commitment to nursing excel-lence,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer at Methodist Sugar Land. “Our nurses are at the heart of every-thing we do and they deserve to be honored for their unrelent-ing compassion and care for our patients.”

The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of charac-teristics known as “The Pathway to Excellence Criteria.” For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environ-ment — as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be present in the facility’s practices, policies, and culture. Nurses in the organiza-tion verify the presence of the cri-teria in the organization through participation in a completely con-fidential online survey.

As a Pathway to Excellence® designated organization, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is committed to nurses, to what nurses identify as important to their practice, and to valuing nurses’ contributions in the work-place. This designation confirms to the public that nurses work-ing at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital know their efforts are supported. The honor encour-ages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and

Approximately 36,000 Fort Bend ISD students ride the district’s school buses to and from school each day. The Transportation Department recently converted the bus

routing software to a new sys-tem and the new transportation schedules were available on the District’s website at www.fort-bendisd.com on Friday, August 12. Just go to “Quick Links”

and click on “School Zone and Bus Route Locator” to access the 2011-2012 bus schedules, or go directly to the Transportation Department website at: www.fortbendisd.com/transportation.

A post card mailing with route numbers and bus stops was sent to parents and should have arrived in mailboxes during the week of August 8 through 13.

Transportation guidelines approved by Board in summer

2010 - Over the summer new students were added to the bus routes, and some of the bus stop locations have changed. The transportation guidelines approved by the Board in the summer of 2010 for bus stop locations have not changed. Elementary students may walk up to 1,000 feet, and middle and high school students may walk up to one-half mile to a bus stop. This is the same

The Texas Department of State Health Services & Fort Bend County Health & Human Services reminds parents to be sure their children are current on all required immunizations before school starts. Students must be vaccinated against certain preventable diseases before the first day of school, or they may not be allowed to attend class.

“Immunizations are key to stopping the spread of disease and keeping children well,” said Dr. David Lakey, DSHS commissioner.

“Vaccinations are safe and have dramatically reduced the

number of children who suf-fer and even die from serious illnesses like measles, polio or chicken pox.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week that deaths of young people due to chicken pox have fallen by 97 percent since the vaccine was introduced in 1995.

Texas immunization require-ments for the upcoming school year can be found in the School & Childcare section of ImmunizeTexas.org.

Immunizations are now available at Fort Bend County Clinical Health Services.

Attention Fort Bend County residents! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County would like to challenge the community to participate in the 2nd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. For only a $500 team entry fee, a team of three spellers will win a place in our “Honey Hall of Fame” and the braggadocio rights as the “Best Grown-Up Spellers in the County.”

In addition to entering teams of spellers for only $500, there are other sponsorship opportu-nities. Sponsorship opportuni-

ties range from $100 to $5,000. As a sponsor at the $100 level, donors will choose a letter in our A-Bee-C’s for Literacy Alphabet. Businesses will claim the letter of their business and have that letter represent their business. The “Literacy Alphabet” will be on display at the event. Additionally, there will be an alphabet for individu-als to show their support of the Council or honor an important person in their lives.

If you have never donated to the Literacy Council, now

is your chance! There are other various opportunities to sponsor this event, and all proceeds ben-efit the life changing programs of the Literacy Council.

Whether you are interested in supporting Literacy by spon-soring the event, or you are interested in spelling, but can’t form a team – contact us! We are looking for spellers AND sponsors!

If you are interested in com-peting against other local spell-ers, please call 281.240.8181 or visit www.grownupbee.com.

2011 Property Tax Rates in City of Meadows Place

This notice concerns the 2011 property tax rates for City of Meadows Place. It presents information about three tax rates. Last year’s tax rate is the actual tax rate the taxing unit used to determine property taxes last year. This year’s effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This year’s rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers start rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property value.

Last year’s tax rate:

Last year’s operating taxes $ 1,863,948Last year’s debt taxes $ 548,746Last year’s total taxes $ 2,412,694Last year’s tax base $ 269,574,749Last year’s total tax rate $ 0.895000/$100

This year’s effective tax rate:

Last year’s adjusted taxes $ 2,405,902(after subtracting taxes on lost property)÷ This year’s adjusted tax base $ 267,712,818(after subtracting value of new property)=This year’s effective tax rate $ 0.898687/$100(Maximum rate unless unit publishes notices and holds hearings.)

This year’s rollback tax rate:

Last year’s adjusted operating taxes $ 2,101,201(after subtracting taxes on lost property and adjusting for anytransferred function, tax increment financing, state criminal justicemandate, and/or enhanced indigent healthcare expenditures)÷ This year’s adjusted tax base $ 267,712,818=This year’s effective operating rate $ 0.784871/$100x 1.08=this year’s maximum operating rate $ 0.847660/$100+ This year’s debt rate $ 0.182587/$100= This year’s total rollback rate $ 1.030247/$100-Sales tax adjustment rate $ 0.087756/$100=Rollback tax rate $ 0.942491/$100

Statement of Increase/DecreaseIf City of Meadows Place adopts a 2011 tax rate equal to the effective tax rate of $0.898687 per $100 of value, taxes would decrease compared to 2010 taxes by $-6,794.

Schedule A - Unencumbered Fund BalanceThe following estimated balances will be left in the unit’s property tax accounts at the end of the fiscal year. These balances are not encumbered by a corresponding debt obligation.

Type of Property Tax Fund BalanceDebt Service Funds 569,991

Schedule B - 2011 Debt ServiceThe unit plans to pay the following amounts for long-term debts that are secured by property taxes. These amounts will be paid from property tax revenues (or additional sales tax revenues, if applicable).

Description of Debt Principal or Contract Interest to be Other Amounts Total Payment Payment to be Paid Paid from to be Paid from Property Taxes Property Taxes

Total required for 2011 debt service $ 488,810- Amount (if any) paid from Schedule A $ 0- Amount (if any) paid from other resources $ 0- Excess collections last year $ 0= Total to be paid from taxes in 2011 $ 488,810+ Amount added in anticipation that the unit willcollect only 100.00% of its taxes in 2011 $ 0= Total debt levy $ 488,810

Schedule C - Expected Revenue from Additional Sales TaxIn calculating its effective and rollback tax rates, the unit estimated that it will receive $234,932 in additional sales and use tax revenues.

This notice contains a summary of actual effective and rollback tax rates’ calculations. You caninspect a copy of the full calculations at fort Bend County Tax Office, 1317 Eugene HeimannCircle, Richmond, TX 77469.

Fort Bend ISD responds to taxpayers mold concerns .....................................from page 1

See Although mold was found, it was not in a 25 foot contiguous area that would require profes-sional mold remediation.

A little confusing is that while the school district indicates a sus-pect material was reported in the band room the week of Aug. 1, it also states that no one report-ed any concerns about mold to school officials or to the District’s Auxiliary Services Department until a staff member sent an email to the principal on Tuesday, Aug. 9, which was the following week. This implies that it wasn’t until after the state inspection that any cleaning took place on the part of the school district’s in-house cleaning staff, since neither school officials nor cleaning staff was aware of any mold at the high school. But someone was aware of a suspect material.

What is called into question is the assertion on the part of the school district implying an after-the-state inspection clean up, irrespective of an eye wit-ness account alleging it took place before then, corroborated by a “whistle-blowing” call to the "Star" the day of the inspection on Aug. 4 about what, from the taxpayer’s perspective, was tanta-mount to a perceived cover up on the part of the school district.

Then, what seems to have annoyed FBISD is the reported statement that an in-service was moved from Austin High School to Clements High School report-edly due to the mold issues. It was due to completion repairs of the Austin High School air condi-tioning system, maintains the dis-

The Fort Bend ISD board of trustees has appointed Cynthia L. Gary to fill the East Side At-Large Position 7, an unex-pired term of the school board recently vacated by Jim Babb. Gary, whose appointment was made on Aug. 8, will start serv-ing in that capacity at her first official board meeting on Aug. 22.

Gary completed her under-graduate and graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University, where she also was a visiting professor of Sociology. She has worked as an Environmental

trict, “and for no other reasons.” The in-service was scheduled at Austin High School on Aug. 3, and Porter said that all three A/C chillers at the high school were fully operational by Aug. 1. It is possible the air conditioning sys-tem may have still needed repair.

The question about the in-service being relocated was not asked of the school dis-trict, because it had already not responded to many others. For the responses and information the school district chose to pro-

vide, they were furnished after an expressed deadline, which has required this follow-up.

In the end, the district said staff members of its Auxiliary Services Department are closely working with the Austin High School cus-todial staff to clean classrooms and carpets, and wash walls appropriately. Air conditioning systems coils have been cleaned, new filters installed, which are also routinely replaced. In this case, replaced again as an added measure, reports the district.

Asperger Syndrome: Treatment OptionsAsperger syndrome is a childhood social and behavioral condition

that is classified as a type of autism. Changes in social behaviors are the defining signs of Aspergers, including decreased interest in socializing or inability to socialize with others. Behavioral differences of children with Aspergers may include specific interests, intolerance to changes in routines, and difficulty detecting subtleties of language, such as sarcasm. Children diagnosed with Aspergers may also be affected by other neurological conditions, such as anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or depression.

Depending on the child’ s age and specific symptoms related to the condition, medications may be prescribed. Disruptive behaviors in children with autism in general may be treated with risperidone (Risperdal) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin). Risperidone is an antipsychotic medication. Methylphenidate works by stimulating the central nervous system. For anxiety, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor ., such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), may be prescribed. For hyperactivity or inattention issues, atomoxetine (Strattera) or clonidine (Duraclon) may be prescribed. Children with Aspergers may be more susceptible to side effects of medications.

High School Football Roundup

Rosenberg National Little League headed to Junior League World SeriesThe Rosenberg National

Little League 14 year old base-ball team won a crucial regional final game last week and is in Michigan now for the Junior League World Series. It is a feat that has not been accomplished by a Rosenberg LL team in exactly 40 years. It is a big, big deal.

In the regional tournament final, SS Jaxon Williams led a team wide defensive attack that gave up only 3 runs and made no errors. Williams made plays that halted the rallies of the Louisiana team time in and time out. Rosenberg was by far the most talented team. They aver-aged more than 11 runs and 13 hits per game.

Jeremy Arriaga, hit 2 monster shots that cleared the bases early in the game. One of them, a triple, was measured at over 375 ft. To give you an idea of how far that is, the foul poles at Minute Maid Park measure 315 ft. Folks, word on the street is that this kid can slaughter a baseball consis-tently.

Umpire Bobby Zepeda, who also was a Rosenberg Little Leaguer back in his day, traveled to Midland with the team and had this to say about the game. “From the 1st pitch the boys had brought their leather. You could see it in their eyes. The confidence level was high.” Let’s not leave out star pitcher Cody Williams, who threw a one hitter

in the regional final. Rosenberg 12 Louisiana 3 - FINAL.

The city of Rosenberg “ struck up the band “ and honored the boys and their coaches and fami-lies with a star studded parade and ceremony last Thursday at the home of RNLL. In atten-dance were multiple members of the media, Mayor Morales, the Terry HS cheerleaders, and anyone and everyone who has anything to do with youth base-ball in the area.

The boys signed autographs, took pictures, answered media questions, received kudos, and were treated like the kings they are.

Coach Steve Sulak, also a for-mer Rosenberg LL player, gave an inspirational tribute to the team and to little league base-ball. Coach Sulak and his staff are to be commended, not only for great baseball, but having great attitudes everywhere they go. They are true ambassadors of the game and their league.

RNLL President Lori Cook gave a great testimony as to how long she’s known the boys. It was touching. Lori has been President for the last 10 years. Anyone who has served on a board of directors knows how much time she has put in. Unbelievable. She, of all people, deserves a trip to the World Series.

We, at the “Star” newspaper, want to congratulate all involved with these boys and salute their

hard work and dedication. The finals from Michigan will be aired on ESPN Saturday, August 20. With a little more hard work, a little more belief in themselves,

and a lot of love from their com-munity, they will be playing in the finals........ and we’ll ALL be watching!!

Go Rosenberg!!!

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

CANCER OF THE FOOT Foot cancer weakens the foot bones and can cause inflammation and

tenderness of the joints. It is a malignant tumor, and its presence results in the destruction of bone cells. Some bone cancers spread to the bone and others originate in the bone. In some cases, the bone or surrounding tissues may develop a lump. Generally, children and teenagers are more likely to develop cancer of the bone. Three percent of skin cancers, or malignant melanoma, occur in the feet. Tumors that form in the bone underlying the toenail are also forms of foot cancer. There are many approaches utilized to treat foot cancers. They are contingent upon the location and severity of the condition and include radiation and chemotherapy.

Today’s column on foot cancer has been brought to you as a public service by our entire staff. Of considerable significance in caring for feet of any age, or any gender, is choosing the right podiatrist. Bearing in mind how much our feet do for us, the least we can do is to provide them with a comfortable envi-ronment, preventive care before problems occur, and professional care when they do. Comprehensive, compassionate footcare is available at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. For an appointment, please call 281-980-3668. Don't take your feet for granted - make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: Each year, over 2,000 people in the United States are affected by bone cancer.

Follow the money ......from page 1

Wow! Citizens actually getting the representation by their governmental officials that serves THEM instead of what best serves the ELECTED OFFICIAL; What a concept.

According to the Feds, these two conspired to have a contract for county services pushed to a particular vendor by accepting and providing bribes, making campaign contributions and providing access to travel to places like Las Vegas to other elected County officials.

It never fails, follow the money and you will find the crooks!

By LeaAnne Klentzman Sheriff’s deputies were called

to a home in the 16400 block of Noblewood Court in the Village of Oak Lakes subdivision in the northeast quadrant of Fort Bend County about 7:45 p.m., Monday evening to investigate an armed robbery.

According to Sheriff’s spokes-man Bob Haenel, the female victim told officers she had just pulled into her garage when a black male subject wearing a white mask over his face walked into her garage holding a semi-automatic handgun. Haenel said the victim’s husband was also in the garage at the time of the robbery.

According to Haenel, the armed intruder ordered both the husband and wife to the floor of the garage then demanded her purse, jewelry and car keys. The suspect was last seen flee-ing south on Noblewood Court in the direction of Oyster Creek

Elementary School. At press time it remains unclear

if the armed intruder actually took the victim’s car or just her keys or exactly how he fled the scene.

The suspect was described as a black male, about 5' 10" with a medium to heavy build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and green shorts.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665.

FBISD’s Chief Communications Officers to retire ..................from page 1

position under a different title. Before joining FBISD, Simpson served as the Public Information Officer for Region IV Education Service Center.

“Mary Ann has given her heart and soul to FBISD, bring-ing all her experiential knowl-edge and talent to maintaining high opinions about the quality of our education system,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Jenney.

“Mary Ann Simpson’s retire-ment will be a loss to FBISD,” said school board president Susan Hohnbaum, who worked with her for almost four years extolling what she called Simpson’s strong sense of integrity and professionalism and thanking her on behalf of the board for her accomplish-ments and commitment to the school district.

Throughout her career Simpson, who earned numer-ous professional achievement awards, has been active chair-ing major project committees, participating on an executive

board and as president of the TSPRA, the state’s public rela-tions association.

She will be vacating her position with the school district on November 11.

Neinast said Ola’s friends told authorities that they had come to the river to cool off and swim after practice. Ola, a honor student and lifeguard, was last seen by his friends about 10 a.m. Neinast said his teammates reported that Ola came up for air, did not appear to be in trouble, then went back under water to swim. That was the last time they saw him. Minutes later when they could not find him, they called 911 for help.

Ola’s body was recov-

ered in the river, just down stream, a few hours later by the Richmond Fire Department.

The Brazos River has a history of claiming lives said Neinast, the currents can be treacherous and the visibility is 0, not to mention all the debris that's lurking under the surface.

The Ola family immigrated to the United State in 2004 for a better life where Benjamin Ola excelled in , as well as sports. He will be missed by both friends and family.

Fort Bend Independent School District cancelled all school activities to honor Ola and provided grief counseling for students at the school, if they chose to participate.

By Elsa MaxeyThe shovels in the ground last

Thursday are a clear indication of Fort Bend County’s announce-ment of the construction of tolled overpasses on the Grand Parkway to be built in two phases. Motorists will have the option to use them and pay a toll for continuous, high speed vehicular traffic use, or they may stay on the frontage roads and pay no toll on the roads already in use.

Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert joined by other county officials, board of directors of the toll road authority, and represen-

tatives of the Texas Department of Transportation broke ground on the Grand Parkway at West Airport for what is called Segment D, the main lane over-passes. “Fort Bend County Commissioners Court assumed local primacy over Segment D of the Grand Parkway nearly two years ago,” said Judge Hebert. He also said it was for expediting the extra high-speed capacity needed to meet increasing daily traffic needs along the segment. “This project will efficiently add that new capacity.”

The groundbreaking signals

Shown l-r at Segment D were: Mike Stone, Professional Project Manager; TxDOT's Jim Hunt and Fort Bend County Commissioner James Patterson seem joyous at the recent groundbreaking for the construction of the overpasses on the Grand Parkway. Construction has already begun for Phase I of the project. Motorists will be able to opt for toll road, non-stop trav-el using nine overpasses or they may opt for the non-toll road sec-tions currently in use.

A troll at the Grand Parkway?

Motorist to be given option to pay toll for continuous trafficthe start of construction of what will be nine overpasses beginning with Phase I from the Westpark Toll Road southward to U.S. 59. Two of them, one at West Airport Boulevard and the other at West Riverpark Drive, are now underway and will be finished in about a year. According to Fort Bend County, construction on the remaining overpasses will begin

next year by early spring or next summer.

Once the overpasses are fully operational, motorists will have the option to take the raised toll roads or the non-toll front-age roads. The tolls for overpass use, not unlike other toll loca-tions, must be paid electronically in accordance with the EZ-TAG system.

Former major leaguer Gary Gaetti to manage the Skeeters ..........................from page 1

His “who’s who” bio includes entering a 30th sea-son associated with profession-al baseball as either a player or coach. During his Major League career, Gaetti played for for six different teams—the Minnesota Twins (1981-90), California Angels (1991-93), Kansas City Royals (1993-95), St. Louis Cardinals (1996-98), Chicago Cubs (1998-99), and Boston Red Sox (2000).

Gaetti begun his Skeeters managerial role immediately and it has been announced that the Atlantic League will hold an expansion draft for the Skeeters team in early 2012. Details will be announced at a later date.

“We are thrilled to have Gary lead this ball club,” said Matt O’Brien, President of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “We are confi-dent that his leadership, Major League experience and impec-cable knowledge of the game will represent the club and the community very well.”

Gaetti and his wife, Donna, make their home in Houston with their daughter Gigi. Gaetti has two sons, Joseph and Jacob. Gaetti’s son, Joe, was selected in the 12th round of the 2003 draft by the Colorado Rockies out of North Carolina State and played in the minor leagues in five different farm systems.

Fort Bend Focus Magazine, the county’s premier maga-zine showcasing people, places and happenings, is pleased to announce their fourth annual event honoring five extraordi-nary women whose contribu-tions to our community make them real gems.

Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend is sched-uled for Thursday, September 22, 2011 with a premier Luncheon and Style Show honoring this year’s Fort Bend JEWELS – five Joyous, Extraordinary Women Enriching Lives. Fort Bend Focus Magazine is pleased to introduce the five JEWELS selected for 2011: Doris Gurecky, Pat Hebert, Cari Middaugh, Judy Schmid and Lucia Street.

From the Fort Bend Junior Service League to the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to the Richmond State School, these women are all committed to making our community the best place to live, work and raise our families. Fort Bend Focus Magazine is pleased to recognize their efforts while doing some-thing that they all feel passionate about: supporting our commu-nity.

Proceeds from Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend will be invested back into our community by support-ing a vital organization: The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County. This non-profit organi-zation’s mission is to end inter-generational cycles of illiteracy in Fort Bend County by improv-ing adult literacy skills and gen-erating community-wide literacy awareness. Formed in 1987, the Literacy Council serves adults who have made the commitment to help themselves change their lives. Well-trained and supported volunteers work one-on-one with adults needing help in basic lit-eracy and on a small group basis in English language skills. Since 1987, the Literacy Council has served over 23,000 adults and has donated 591,000 tutoring and learning lab hours to assist with decreasing the 24% rate of individuals lacking basic lit-eracy skills in Fort Bend County. (National Center for Education Statistics (NCES); January 2009)

“As a publisher, literacy is vital to success of not only our business, but to the success of our community as a whole. With the illiteracy rate of Fort Bend County exceeding 20%, the valuable work of the Literacy Council is making a difference in our work force,” said Lisa Fredrickson, publisher of Fort Bend Focus Magazine. Since 1987, the Literacy Council has returned approximately $15,000,000 to the community in tutoring hours alone. “This year, the Literacy Council will spend approximately 22,000 hours tutoring citizens, and we are honored to assist with this much-needed and worthwhile program.”

While the event will be the highlight of Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend, the September magazine will feature a beautiful spread showcasing photos and biog-raphies of the five JEWELS along with sponsors of the event. Distributed directly to Fort Bend homes each month, as well as in rack distribution at business-es and retailers throughout the county, the special Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend section will pay hom-age to these special women and their community service.

“Because of the efforts of the wonderful, caring individuals

who devote so much of their time and talent to our philan-thropies, especially these five women – Doris, Pat, Cari, Judy and Lucia – our community is a better place,” said Fredrickson. “Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor their commitment to Fort Bend County and be able to give back to the community that has so graciously supported us.”
