1969 C.O.P.O. Chevelle
A few dealers in '69 who knew what boxes to check could order a 427 equipped Chevelle literally out the “back door” of the assembly plant. They were purchased under C.O.P.O.
(central office production order) number 9562. The fire-breathing 427 was rated at 425hp and a whopping 460 ft/lbs of torque. When leaving the factory, the only telltale signs these potent Chevelles were anything other than the ”plain Jane” variety were the twin-bulge hood, “blacked out” grille, and dual chrome exhaust tips. Yenko Chevrolet, located in Canonsburg, PA, arranged to purchase as
many as ninety-nine of the estimated 323 specially equipped C.O.P.O. Chevelles built. All Yenko Super Cars were fitted with heavy-duty versions of either the 400 Turbo Hydra-matic or M21 four-speed manual transmission and a 4.10:1 Positraction differential. Although the official horsepower rating given to the 427 by Chevrolet was 425hp, Yenko rated it at 450hp. Many enthusiasts firmly believe the higher horsepower rating given by Yenko to be closer to the truth. Several special cosmetic appointments were added to the Yenko Chevelles, transforming them into Yenko Super Cars. The list included after- market fifteen-inch five spoke wheels with Yenko center caps and special Yenko striping on the hood and body side panels. Cast Yenko emblems, painted red, white, and blue, were added to each of the front fenders behind the wheel
openings. A red, white, and blue Yenko decal was applied to the rear cove panel as well. As for the interior, a Hurst shifter was installed on four-speed equipped Chevelles, while a Hurst dual gate shifter was used for those equipped with a Turbo Hydra-matic trans-
mission. A Stewart Warner tachometer was mounted under the dash pad to the right of the driver. A special 140 mph speedometer replaced the standard 120 mph version. The Yenko “SYC” logo was carried over to the interior and applied to the front head rests as well. This fire-breathing Chevelle did not come cheap, as the sticker price of one of these Super Cars was nearly $5000.
