On the Cover - Bob & Jo Spurr’s 1994 White CoupeOur 1994 White Corvette Coupe was a great find as it has only 28,128 miles on it. The interior is grey and black with grey seats. It still smells new. The drive train is an LT1 with a 6 speed and is very fun to drive. We have owned about 43 cars during our 28 year marriage. But the ‘94 Coupe is the one we enjoy most. This is my second Corvette. I bought a new 1976 ordered to my spec., which was great. We hope to order one more new Corvette to specs., but for now the ‘94 will do.

We also have a 1948 Chevy Pickup parked next to our Corvette with 49 miles on it. We finished a full restoration on it and took “Best in Class” in the 2005 Kirkland Legends car show. Hope to show our ‘94 as well and who knows? My wife and I look forward to being members of the CMCS and to enjoy some of the club road trips. They sound like fun. We've lived in Kirkland for most of our 28 years in Washington. Originally came from Chicago but now call Washington our home, as Chicago is a great place to be from.We have 3 children, 2 daughters and a son. Our oldest daughter is graduating from WSU this fall in nursing. Our youngest is a freshman at WSU. Our son is starting his 4 years in the Navy, serving our country. My wife and I enjoy traveling the Pacific NW, dancing and fine art.

Bring out the cake. Light the candles…it’s Anniversary Time! Yes, it was 10 years ago this month that we welcomed SEAVIEW CHEVROLET-GEO as our major club sponsor. A lot has changed. A lot has stayed the same. GEO is long gone, replaced by PONTIAC-GMC. A few of the faces have changed but owner, CHRIS OLSON, is still ready, willing and able to do whatever’s needed to take you out of whatever you’re driving and put your tail in the seat of a new or used CORVETTE or, for that matter, anything else that Chevrolet or Pontiac or GMC builds. Our feature event this month will be the 10th Annual Seaview Show-n-Shine on August 13th. All Corvettes and all Corvette Clubs are welcome and encouraged to be there. Chris Olson is making this anniversary show extra special with things like a live remote radio broadcast on-site during the show. Put this one at the top of your Corvette ‘to do’ list this month. Let’s show SEAVIEW CHEVROLET-PONTIAC-GMC how much we appreciate their TEN YEARS of support of CMCS. Details are on page 17.Plenty of other Corvette stuff going on in August, too. Check out the Upcoming Activities pages. Looking ahead, have you registered for Seattle in September yet? Is your Valve Cover racer ready? Better get moving. On both! The host hotel is filling up fast and the track will be faster. Competition for Club Participation award is heating up, too. Capital City Corvettes is still (barely) in the lead, but only by the slimmest of margins. Another Oregon club and at least one from Idaho are breathing down their necks. It’s going to be a race! Last month at the High Desert event, word on the street was that the Dukes Racing Team would be coming back en mass to defend their Valve Cover Racing title. Can they do it? Find out at Seattle in September. See you there!

We thought so, too.

What if instead of parking this505 horsepower rocket for mostof the year in the garage, youcould share it with some of yourbest friends, forget about maintenance, and pay something morealong the lines of sales tax instead of the full $75,000 price tag?Now if you and your friends could stand to gain from other folks drivingthis Z06 while you have a good time with another car, that would bequite a blast, right?

Some Thoughts After School Daze by Michael Armstrong

One of the objectives in getting THE CHEV was to have a sports car and learn how to drive it. I was pleased to find that CMCS would provide the opportunity to learn some of the dynamics of the car’s behavior & performance in a safe, controlled environment. Here is some of what a first timer at School Daze encounters:Sensory Overload: this started one week before track day. Ground school was a fact filled two hour session dealing with track safety, rules, protocol and how-to. The track boss and the chief driving instructor briefed us on track rules, safety, flags, more safety and information about getting around the course. There was more than two days material covered in two hours. It left you well briefed but wondering how much would be retained, even with all the handouts. Event Day Butterflies: We have strong attachments to our Corvettes. The prospect of hurting it is not heartwarming. The speeds, unknowns and a new experience leave one wondering what’s in store.Meeting The Learned One: I was chatting with the event organizers about getting an instructor lined up. They introduced me to Jim Millet, a senior instructor with the BMW Club. He has lots of experience both driving and teaching. We started the day with a few runs around the track in his Z3 M series coupe. He showed me the “line”, where to accelerate, brake, the turn in points and how to get the car around the course most efficiently. My Turn: The sensory overload resumed. All those things you need to remember must now be executed. It took a while to get the line down. At different points, the correct line appeared counter intuitive. Weather complicated things. It was wet, it dried a bit then got wet again. After three or four track sessions, I had the line reasonably well organized and did not get lost as often. Then we got a drier session and confidence & performance went up markedly. Jim Millet taught well. As it turned out, the speeds were not that high and the car and occupants were never in peril. That Car Is More Than A Pretty Face: I viewed THE CHEV as a capable GT car, sometimes in the vein of a Thunderbird that performed better. That is no longer. Experiencing what that car can do was a real eye-opener. It goes, stops and turns with more finesse than imagined. And, more than that, it is something I can do with the car. It very positively changed the way I feel about the car. A big thank you to CMCS, School Daze organizers and Jim Millet. Now I’ve got to do it again.Mike and his wife Jane joined the club in January with their 2003 Spiral Gray Coupe, THE CHEV.

Mill Creek Show - Event Reportby Lorrie Montgomery

For those of you who missed the Mill Creek All Corvette Show this past weekend, you really missed a great event. The venue was super, with a variety of stores and restaurants to please everyone, as well as the Annual Mill Creek Festival which was going strong. We had 98 Corvettes register for the show, and a few others that just stopped by to see what was going on. They came from all over the area including Yakima!

We want to thank Jay and Jan Cockrum for the outstanding job they did in planning and executing the Mill Creek All Corvette Show. They started out by organizing a group of Marque Club volunteers to help. But it was Jay and Jan who worked tirelessly over the last few months meeting with the Mill Creek Festival organizers, calling on the community businesses, lining up sponsors and getting raffle donations from anyone who showed even the slightest interest, and they handled all the promotion for of this event (obviously it paid off)! And to top it off, they arranged for 85 degrees and sunshine!Needless to say, this show was a huge success. So be sure to watch for it next year...you won't regret it!! Thanks again to Jay and Jan!

2006 Parade Event Reportby Jim McDonnell (Parade Chairman)

[email protected] is having another successful parade season. We were in 4 parades in July and are looking forward to two more in August.

On July 4th twelve cars participated in the Bothell Parade. The weather was not as hot as last year, thank goodness, were closer to the front. We moved rapidly through the receptive crowds. Afterwards several of us went to lunch, something we always try to do.

The Redmond Parade was second. On July 8th we carried celebrities in 10 cars and had four cars “along for the ride.” The parade route was so short this

year that we finished in 15 minutes. We skipped lunch as many of us departed for the Mill Creek Show & Shine.

Celebrities were in our cars again at the Greenwood Parade on July 26th. We had nine cars of celebrities and a few along for the ride. A run to Dick’s for hamburgers afterwards finished the evening.CMCS was specifically requested to furnish convertibles for the Seafair Torch Light Parade on July 29th. We came in with 9 convertibles and a few extra. We carried dignitaries both from Seattle and other countries. The Torch Light Parade is the premier parade of Seattle Seafair. Being a part of it was special.

We have two parades in August, both on the same day. Magnolia is on the morning of the 5th and Lake City is in the afternoon. There is still room if some of you folks want to join our group. We will have more pictures to add to our web site and next newsletter. Do come out and join us. Parades are a fun way to offer community service.

Let’s Go Valve Cover Racin’. . .VALVE COVER RACES! Never heard of it, you say? Here’s the deal: It’s a lot like the Pinewood Derby races that your neighborhood Cub Scouts do. Only bigger. Bigger boys have bigger toys. Girls do too! Simply take an old valve cover, slap a set of wheels under it, find an incline somewhere, and say to your buddy, “Bet mine’s faster’n yers!”, and Bubba, ‘ya probably got ‘yerself a race. There are a few rules, of course, but not many. In order to keep this from turning into an NWACC type fiasco…i.e…crushed under the weight of the NWACC competition rule book…we’re borrowing the guidelines used by our Canadian friends. Very simple. And, if we build to their standards, perhaps we can entice some international competition some day.

THERE WILL BE (3) CLASSES:

RULES and SPECIFICATIONS

GENERALEntrants are responsible for staging their own Valve Cover entry.Racing is open to kids (ALL ages), one official entry per person, after time trials.Unsportsmanlike behavior will result in disqualification (& heavy shame!).Organizers do not accept responsibility for injury or damage to persons or property or for failure to have fun. Yer on yer own, bubba!Decisions of the Organizers will be final. Protests will NOT be acknowledged.Awards may be made for People’s Choice, Rusty Wheels, and Competition classes.Anything NOT specifically PROHIBITED by above rules is LEGAL.Anything NOT specifically REQUIRED by above rules is OPTIONAL.And finally. . . there AIN’T NO MORE RULES!So there you have it. Dig around in your garage & find that old valve cover you’ve been using to store old rocker arms & rusty head bolts that you’ll never ever use again. Dump the junk out of it, slap on a set of wheels (and maybe a coat of spiffy paint) and LET’S GO RACIN’ . . . !

2006 RAD Experience - Event Reportby Patty Bunn

A huge round of applause goes to Kayla, Gary, and to those who helped make the Mains final RAD event successful! Bob and I are sporting new suntans and sunburns that will remind us of our wonderful experience on the 2006 RAD to Seaside, OR. It was a blast and HOT, HOT, HOT!On Saturday, I drove at speeds faster than I-5 (a parking lot at the time) on sweet long and winding roads that RUNVUS has mostly never driven on in order to get to Seaside. We did get a lot of smiles and waves from on-lookers who were passed by our mostly roofless convoy of Corvettes. Shortly after arriving in Seaside, Bob and I purchased yummy salt water taffies and souvenirs while walking along Broadway, then dipped our feet in the ice cold refreshing ocean waves, and then crashed in our room. Later that evening, we enjoyed the company of other Corvette Marque Club members such as the Luczyk’s who flew their kite during an incredible sunset. Soon after, I helped get a huge bonfire going. We roasted marshmallows and nibbled on S’mores as memorable stories of Corvette moments were being told. Before we knew it midnight was close at hand. After a majority voted, only Bob objected, no one was to be named the ‘31’ champ that night. The sound of Seaside night life still buzzed in the air as Bob and I tried to get some much needed sleep. When Sunday morning came, we had a hard time believing that it was almost time to head home. Not eager to go, I wanted to check out the shops and walk on the beach one last time that weekend. When it was time to go, Bob and I agreed to keep the roof on RUNVUS due to it being a lot hotter day than Saturday. Bob drove this time around towards home. The roads taken back were pretty bumpy, and the smell of pine was strong. We stopped at the Jewell Elk Park to stretch our legs. A few of us commented about needing ‘sporting bras’ on that last stretch of road. Only one tree provided enough shade for our group. During the break, we found out that someone actually had a refrigerator in their storage area. We checked it out and were pretty impressed with how little space it took up! Also, none of us saw any Elks, but saw a llama (or was it a camel?). After getting back on the road, we stuck with our group up until reaching I-5 so that we relieve the grandparents who were watching our kids.Bob and I got to experience RAD only once before with RUNVUS. We both were sad that RAD 2006 would be the final one. After talking it over with the Mains, the Bunns will coordinate a RAD event in 2007. We will keep you posted with the details after we decided what route and where we will be staying. Till then- TTFN!

Seattle in September 2006 Informationby Kevin & Judy Jewell [email protected]

There is only a little over a month until Seattle in September debuts for 2006. If you haven’t already done so, get your registrations mailed and be sure to contact the hotel for your room reservations. There is a competing event at the hotel that weekend, so we expect them to be booked. The event is coming together well and we look forward to giving everyone a fun time. Food, touring, autocross, more food, valve cover racing, show & shine, poker run, big banquet with entertainment; something for everyone. Remember our theme is Mardi Gras so bring your beads, masks, hats or whatever for the banquet. One of the ways we pay for the event is with the raffles during the event. During the event we sell raffle tickets. For the major raffle prizes, which will be spread around the room, the participant can put one, or more, raffle tickets in each of the boxes in front of the prize. The winning ticket gets the prize. We also will have lesser raffle prizes that will be grouped together to go to winning tickets drawn at random. We are soliciting the following type of prizes:

Goody Bag Prizes: These tend to be the less expensive give away prizes such as pens, car wash items, key chains etc. Anything of value is always fun to get in a goody bag. Marty Cameron is collecting goody bag prizes.

General raffle prizes: If you have something new sitting at home that would work for a raffle prize, please donate it for the event. Maybe you know something that you could buy that would be well received, consider adding that to your next shopping list. We need lots of raffle prizes. If you have a contact with someone you buy from, sell to or just know, ask them for a raffle prize. This could be a free oil change at your favorite dealer. Maybe a car wash bucket full of car care products. Use your imagination, for prizes. Certainly, even things like software can be a valued donation. For cash contributions, we recognize any entity that gives us $150 as a donation. They will be shown on our bulletin board and all the promotional literature as major donors. If you were there in 2004 you might remember that the coveted raffle prize was a set of 4 Goodyear tires for your Corvette. Good Neighbor Tire & Auto Service, Inc. of Renton has again offered a set of tires. Don’t think the prizes you solicit have to be of this cost. Anything, especially car related, is valued. We can always group together small tool kits with something else to make a raffle prize. Don and Marcia Hardesty are the chairs of this effort.

This year, we are also soliciting members to develop gift baskets that will be put around the room with the raffle ticket container at each one. The baskets have been very successful and highly sought after at other events. At the last Seattle in September planning meeting, one of the committee chairs showed a nice carrying bag full of hair care products. Some of the other baskets already planned include a Cajun basket (our theme is Mardi Gras this year), an Everything Seattle basket full of Seattle unique products and a Closet Basket, with cedar hangers and other closet items. Get together with a friend and develop your own Wine and Chocolate basket, Gardening basket or again use your imagination. I use the term basket, but it could be a bucket, wheel barrow, or any type of container to hold the prize contents. Whatever seems appropriate for the prize. I have seen people buy another $50 worth of raffle tickets just to increase their odds of winning that basket they most covet, so this is a great fund raising activity for the event.Marty Cameron is also taking shirt and sweatshirt orders. See the registration form to order your clothing, or call Marty direct. We hope everyone joins us for Seattle in September. Please also consider helping, by volunteering for one or more of the committees and participating in the raffle prize solicitation or preparation of gift baskets. Any questions, just call or e-mail us and we will get you the answer. Thanks, Kevin & Judy Jewell (425) 885-0103
