August is Membership Month in the Rotary World…

August is also the second month of my term as District Governor and reality is start-ing to set in that I must write an article every month for the Governor's Newsletter. There is so much going on in our Rotary World (District 6630). On July 25, 2009 we enjoyed our first (and hopefully an-nual) “Christmas in July” Dinner Auction to benefit The Rotary Foundation. The ever-amazing Marsha Pap-palardo, of the Rotary Club of Brunswick, chaired the com-mittee that raised nearly $10,000 to help The Founda-tion. Special thanks to Mar-sha for all her hard work, and a big thank you to everyone that participated. It was a

great time for a great cause!

You may be wondering how this ties into Membership. Becky (my significant other) invited some of her friends to the auction. They were impressed by the fellowship they enjoyed and the good works that they learned about. They asked me which Rotary Club to consider joining. The obvious answer of course was ANY Rotary Club…just join!!

Each time we meet someone new, we have an opportunity to make a positive impres-sion about this wonderful organization called Rotary. When others see and feel our excitement and realize that they too can help change the world, they will

want to be a part of the best organization on earth!

The Rotary Clubs of Aurora and Burton-Middlefield had a joint membership recruit-ment cocktail party at the Pine Lake Trout Club on Wednesday July 15th, approxi-mately 75 Rotarians and prospective members at-tended including my oldest son Mike. Mike resides in Greensboro, N.C. and is now seriously considering joining Rotary. Apparently, it helps to hear things from people other than Dad.

The Rotary Club of Cleveland is bringing the Tall Ships Fes-tival back to Cleveland July 7-11, 2010. The festival will be one of the highlights of TRC Cleveland’s Centennial Cele-bration.

The club is very involved in the planning of this event. It is currently one of the biggest events on the calendar for Northeast Ohio in 2010. Previous Tall Ships events have attracted as many as 150,000 visitors. There will be many sponsors and part-ners helping to put on this event, but there will be a strong focus on Rotary throughout the event. There will be many opportunities to volunteer during the event.

The Tall Ships Festival will be used to promote membership and our message not only for TRC Cleveland, but for all clubs in district 6630. What

a great opportunity to get the message about “Service above self” out to the community. For the first time, there will be a youth sail training compo-nent, designed and imple-mented by TRC Cleveland and its partners! Sponsorship opportunities are available, with one of the most popular being the ability to book a Tall Ship for a “Sail Away” during the Festival. These are ex-pected to sell out quickly.

For more information please contact TRC Cleveland at 216 556 8637 or

[email protected] . TRC Cleveland looks forward to working with everyone to strengthen our clubs and dis-trict through the Tall Ships Festival.

This years for-mat of allowing half the team to be family members was a plus and between that and encouraging clubs to merge should help us to continue this tradition, and even get more clubs for next year. Thanks to all of you and a special thanks to John Bosco, our new District Gov. for his support and coming out yester-day. See you all in 2010.

Please mark your calendars now for DISTRICT CONFERENCE at KALAHARI , April 23to25. This will be a family Conference so make your plans now! make this the year YOUR CLUB MEMBERS meet the rest of the District’s Fam-ily of Rotary!

Congratulations to Strongs-ville who continued their Yan-kee dominance in the Rotary softball tournament. They have won 7 in a row and 13 overall championships. We added $304 to be contrib-uted to World Community Service in behalf of the final 3 clubs, which brings the amount raised for 23 years to

TRC Cleveland Continues Rapid Recovery

Governo r’s letter cont’ d

Tucked away in a densely populated area on the near west side of Cleveland is an oasis of nature that runs along the rapid transit train tracks known as the Red Line. The tract of green space had been ignored and neglected for years. In 1977 the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) started a track clean-up program known as Rapid Recovery. Corpora-tions and non-profit groups were asked to adopt sites ap-proximately 200 feet wide along the tracks for the pur-pose of cleaning up and beau-tifying them. The Rotary Club of Cleveland, founded in 1910, was one of the original organizations to volunteer their services and they selected the West 25th Street station as their site. The West 25th Street site was chosen for several reasons. A visitor who takes the train from the airport gets their first view of Cleveland from the site and the Club wanted this view to be a posi-tive first impression of the City. Thousands of RTA rid-ers view the site daily, totaling nearly one million riders an-nually. The Red Line is a fa-vorite for fans going to Indi-ans, Cavaliers and Browns games. The station itself is a

very beautiful and unique ar-chitectural structure made entirely of red steel and glass. There is not a single section of wall or roofing that is not made of glass. This feature enhances rider safety within the station. The station’s three story tall steeple-like peek is a beacon for the neighborhood which includes the famous West Side Market and the Great Lakes Brew-ing Company. Over the years every other Rapid recov-ery site has been abandoned and the program has been discontinued. But the Rotary Club of Cleveland was not deterred...they continued to maintain their site. In fact, the Club began adopting aban-doned sites next to its original site which had become over-grown and much of the tracks appeared to be a garbage trough. Today the Rotary Club of Cleveland maintains over 21 acres on a mile long stretch of track that runs from the Cuya-hoga River on the north end to a quarter mile south of West 25th Street. A dedicated group of members follow a vigorous Spring, Summer and Fall work schedule to maintain

and improve the site. Stanley H. Adams, Roy G. “Dutch” Harley and Peter H. Presson are Club members who have spearheaded the project from the beginning and all have served with distinction as Honorary Club presidents. The Rotary International motto is “Service Above Self” and there is no better example of this than these three amaz-

ing gentle-men.

Past Honor-ary President

Stan owned an insurance agency into his 80’s and is currently 88 years old and is the father of nine children. He is a tireless volunteer who can still handle a weed trimmer on a hillside for three hours straight. He can “out work” many of the younger members and his passion for making the site a park-like setting is conta-gious. A member of the Club for over 40 years, his vision of what the site should look like is reflected in its beauty today and in the Club’s long-term plan for the site. He is on call at all times for anything that needs to get done.

Past Honorary President Dutch, formerly an executive with Albert M. Higley Con-

struction Company and an avid volunteer at Rockefeller Park in East Cleveland, is 94 years “young” and always ensured that flowers, shrubs and trees were planted at the site. He personally built a stairway capable of getting a push mower up and down the steep slope that bor-ders the entire site. His wisdom and dedication have proven invaluable to the project. In recent years Dutch would bring along a helper to make sure the flowers he brought were planted so everyone else could proceed with their regular tasks. He is a 54-year member of Rotary.

Past Honorary President Pete was an account executive at Federation for Community Planning and is currently 84 years old. A member of the Club for over 40 years, he was a long-time Treasurer of the Club and Pete was always the first one at the site. He had picked up the site be-fore anyone else arrived so mowing could begin immediately. For many years he maintained all the equip-ment and used his van to haul the equipment to every clean-up. His wit and smile made it a fun project for everyone.

Based on the performance of the world economy over the last six or nine months, it does not appear that this situation has turned around yet. This left several projects that were in the works at the end of last Rotary year as "carryover" to this year. Those projects will be submitted soon. That will put a further strain on this years RI funds and could even

close funding earlier than last year. I hope that this is a "worst case scenario" and that funding returns to normal, but I would hate to see any of our excellent Dist. 6630 projects be delayed or die because of a lack of funding. Please keep this in mind as you work through the early stages of your projects. Please contact Rick Pollak or Jim Eldridge

Please consider submitting EARLY if you plan on apply-ing for either a District or RI matching Grant for an Inter-national project. As you may be aware; last year due to the poor investment returns on RI Foundation money, RI had to suspend matching grant fund-ing at the end of March.

from the District 6630 Grants Committee, or your ADG or even DG John Bosco as soon as your ideas are ready to put on paper.

For the 2010-2011 academic year, District 6630 will have one Ambassadorial Schol-arship to award. The deadline for having the completed applications was August 1st. Next year’s deadline will be about the same time. There will be 6 candidates invited for district interviews to be held on August 22nd.

The Rotary Foundation is currently the world’s largest, private sponsor of univer-sity-level international scholarships. It supports approximately 800 students studying abroad annually. Each scholar-ship is worth $25,000 and only the aca-demic year scholarship is now offered. In the past, there have been Cultural and Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholar-ships. These are no longer available. Our district, however, has always only awarded the academic year scholarship with the expectation that our scholars will have the time to go beyond their school work and get involved in the local Rotary clubs and the local communities.

Please feel free to call me with any ques-tions you may have. Debra L. Boerger 216/464-6266, x 206 216/464-5387 fax [email protected] Alterna-tively, the RI website can give you a lot of information. Just go to the Students and Youth tab.

upper ½ of the class. (The exchange ex-perience often opens the eyes of this latter group who become much better students on their return.) Parents will only need to cover travel expenses, organizational fees

and additional spending money as their child needs it.

This is not a Founda-tion program so chil-dren or relatives of Ro-tarians can participate in this Rotary program. The District Candidate Interviews will be in the

middle of November, 2009 so applica-tions will need to be submitted to District Outbound Chairman Patrick Kelley by the end of October.

For more information on this Scholarship program as well as the Inbound and Short-term programs each Club should send two representatives to the Club Training Session at the District Inbound Orientation at Rex Lake on August 29, 2009, 9–11 AM. It will be followed by lunch with the District’s new Exchange Students. Cost to Club is $10 per person. You can also click on the Link to the Youth Exchange Page for more informa-tion and Applications or call/text Asst Governor Patrick Kelley, District Youth Exchange Outbound Chairman, at 330-233-2700 or call at 216-759-2105, [email protected].

The District’s Youth Exchange Commit-tee has announced the availability for each District club of partial Foreign Study scholarships for American high school students to study for one year in a foreign country. As part of Rotary International’s Youth Exchange Program, foreign Rotary Clubs will provide your child their room, board and tuition with an estimated worth in excess of $20,000. This program has earned the reputation of a highest quality program that the middle class student can easily afford.

The District is making available 25 of the scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year. (This number could be increased if more clubs award their scholarships to outstanding teenagers.)

There is no cost to your Rotary Club to award this scholarship and sponsor your hometown candidate to the District inter-views.

There is at lest one teen at your local high school who has dreamed of the adventure of being an exchange student but didn’t know about this Rotary scholarship pro-gram.

They must be between 15½ and 18½ on September 1, 2010; generally in the upper 1/3 of their class but exceptions are regu-larly made for outstanding teens in the

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest held its 49th annual Changeover Dinner at Acacia Coun-try Club on Saturday, July 18th. On the surface, given TRC Hillcrest is but one of many Rotary Clubs in District 6630, one might question the newsworthiness of the event.

In addition to the typical awards, recogni-tions, thank yous and inductions, this year’s changeover included a special event. TRC Hillcrest is now the home club of the Dis-trict Governor for 2009-2010, John Bosco. John reaffirmed his acceptance of this posi-tion as part of the festivities Saturday night. The “Home Club of the District Governor” Banner was presented by PDG Fran Bayless and the induction was preformed by PDG William Hite, III.

Upon completion of his term in July 2010, John will become the 6th PDG on the membership rolls of TRC Hillcrest since 1975. Other PDG’s who have called TRC Hillcrest home include PDG Earl Much, 1974-1975; PDG Joseph Skoda, 1980-1981; PDG Michael J. Johns, 1986-1987; PDG William Hite III, 1999-2000 & PDG Daniel Sazima DDS, 2001-2002. Congratulations to John and TRC Hillcrest and please pass the hot mustard!
