What is Ablative Fractional Resurfacing? by Todd E. Schlesinger , MD, FAAD Welcome to August! With summer in full swing, you may not be thinking laser resurfacing!Believe it or not, now is the time to make plans for the fall if you have been considering having this done. Dermatology & Laser Center of Charleston is proud to announce the latest technology in fractional laser resurfacing, the Groove optic. Another first for DLCC in Charleston, the Groove optic channels the Erbium laser light from our Palomar resurfacing laser into parallel channels called Grooves. The unique and controlled skin injury pattern preserves portions of healthy tissue surrounding the treatment areas so that clients can receive a high level of ablation (better results!) with minimal downtime. The Groove optic is the newest innovation to improve on an already amazing treatment, the Palomar Lux2940 Resurfacing Laser. The Lux2940 is designed to reduce facial lines and wrinkles by 50 percent or more, while removing dark spots, blemishes and building new collagen. Previous laser resurfacing procedures carried several weeks of recovery and a higher risk of complications like scarring and color change. Lux2940 Laser Resurfacing can be accomplished in one treatment and recovery takes a week. Safety is paramount and the new laser minimizes problems while offering the best result available. Clients who have had Lux2940 with the Groove optic say that there is increased smoothness to the skin, better removal of lines and wrinkles and decreased sun spots and blemishes. Candidates for this procedure should be able to stay in for 2-4 days while the skin recovers, but can expect full healing of the skin surface by day 7 after the procedure. In subsequent weeks, the healing continues under the skin’s top layer. Several months later, the collagen is still building, further smoothing the skin and providing for a long term result (5- 15 years). Preparation for the procedure is easy. Stay out of the sun, use sunscreen and an excellent skin care regimen. Be healthy and eat a balanced diet. Clients may not be tanned prior to the procedure. Our staff will suggest an appropriate skin care regimen when you schedule your appointment and a customized after care regimen is included in the price of the procedure. During your pre-procedure consultation, the details of the procedure and after care will be explained and all of your questions answered. We have photographs of prior clients and a reference list for you to speak with clients who have had the procedure done. After the procedure, your job will be to simply follow our after care directions, applying ointment and keeping your face clean. While there is swelling for the first few days, you will be surprised at how fast the healing takes place! We look forward to discussing Lux2940 Laser Resurfacing using the Groove Optic with you soon! DLCC News by Kara O'Neil Congratulations are once again in order for our own Dr. Schlesinger. Place salmon in a sealable plastic bag, add 3 tablespoons of the sauce and refrigerate; let marinate for 15 minutes. Reserve the remaining sauce. Preheat broiler. Line a small baking pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. Transfer the salmon to the pan, skinned-side down. (Discard the marinade.) Broil the salmon 4 to 6 inches from the heat source until cooked through, 6 to 10 minutes. Drizzle with the reserved sauce and garnish with sesame seeds. Tips & Notes Tips: How to skin a salmon fillet: Place skin- side down. Starting at the tail end, slip a long knife between the fish flesh and the skin, holding down firmly with your other hand. Gently push the blade along at a 30° angle, separating the fillet from the skin without cutting through either. To toast sesame seeds, heat a small dry skillet over low heat. Add seeds and stir constantly, until golden and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and let cool. Safety First! We want to do everything we can to make sure your children are safe while in our office. We must ask that you do not bring any children under the age of 12 to your laser appointments.
