This year we will be ordering all of the tickets through the church so that we can sit together for the fun, and transportation to and from the game will be available for a small additional
cost! This is an ALL AGES event, and anyone under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult from their family. Tickets will be discounted to $20 (normally $50-62) and are located in the upper level of the Metrodome. AUGUST 2012
Thank you to everyone who made Mystery Mission 2012 such a wonderful success, through
prayers, well wishes financial contributions and encouragement. This year thirteen youth and two
adults traveled to Joplin, MO one year after an EF5 Tornado cut a one mile path of destruction
through the middle of the city. Our group was again noted for its hard work, and great attitudes,
which allowed us to be God’s hands and feet in the midst of the recovery of that community. We
were able to work on three different work projects while there:
First, we helped to honor those who had lost their lives in the Tornado. Cunningham Park has
become a memorial park for the community, and 161 trees were planted honoring each of the
deaths from the disaster. Our group was honored to help keep those trees thriving in this park,
even in the midst of this year’s draught, by bringing bucket by bucket 10 gallons of water per tree,
as well as water the bushes which surrounded this now holy place.
Second, we helped to rebuild community for those whose neighbor-
hood and homes were destroyed. There still remains approximately 350
FEMA trailers in Joplin, as even with the efforts of all the volunteers,
rebuilding livable homes is a slow task. In the middle of these trailers is
a two mile walking path that connects the different living areas with a
playground and an area for community support. Our group was able to
rehabilitate that path, by moving and laying new mulch along the full
length of the path, hopefully bringing a little bit of God’s green space
back to the temporary residents of the FEMA village.
Finally, we worked with the city to identify the permanent changes to the infrastructure. Because
the Tornado ripped a path through the center of the community, everything city wide was ef-
fected, including the city water. We were informed that because of the damage, not all of the Fire
hydrants had the same water resources or pressure throughout the city, and needed to be identified
which could be used for what tasks. Our last day we walked through, even some wealthy areas of
Joplin, with spray paint to color code the city’s hydrants.
Those of us on the trip learned a lot, not only about who we are, but who God is, through the sweat, tears and laughter that all come from being God’s hands and feet in the world, and realizing that God was already there, long before the Peace bus ever rolled into town.

“I have already met
everyone I want to
meet.” “I’ve got
enough friends.” “It’s just too hard to get to
know people when you know they’ll be leaving
in a short time.” “I don’t have the energy.”
Have you ever thought those things?
Figured your life is full enough with the
people you already know? Ever
hesitate wondering just how involved
you want to be in making a new friend?
Sure, it’s easy to be friendly, to
welcome someone and be a gracious
acquaintance. But how deeply do we
welcome others into our lives? It takes
time, energy, and a lot of effort to get to
know someone, that sometimes we
wonder why we should bother.
You’re not alone. The first church
struggled with these same problems.
People started to get comfortable with
one another and stopped seeing the
value in the new people who joined
their group. So the writer of Hebrews
concludes his letter about God’s grace
in Christ with instruction for living out
the Christian faith: “Let mutual love
continue. Do not neglect to show
hospitality to strangers, for by doing
that some have entertained angels
without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:1-2).
Think about what you may be missing
out on in those times you don’t feel like
letting someone in: the chance to learn
more about yourself, to grow in who
you are, or to offer your wisdom and
the gift of who you are to someone
else. God’s church is made up of his
people – how we choose to welcome
others speaks volumes about our God.
So I share this bit of poetry with you that
I came across a month ago as a
reflection on what it means to be God’s
church:
God’s church is composed of people like
me. I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly, if I am.
Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.
It will do great work, if I work.
It will make generous gifts to many
causes, if I am a generous giver.
It will bring other people into its worship
and fellowship, if I invite and bring them.
It will be a church where people grow in
faith and serve God, if I am open to such
growth and service.
So my challenge to you is to let mutual
love continue. Don’t neglect to show
hospitality to strangers – and even those
who are familiar – for by doing that, you
will find your own life enriched by the
almighty God who welcomes us into his
family!
Blessed by God through others,
~Pr. Matthew
