Visit to RAF Scampton On Thursday, 14th June, a coachload of RAFA members, family and friends, set off from the club, picking up more passengers at The Royal British Legion, Waltham, en route to RAF Scampton for a 40's style day. We met up with coaches from other areas and lots of people had made the effort and dressed in uniform or forties dress. A spiv, wearing an ill-fitting suit and suede shoes, (never trust a man wearing suede shoes, girls) approached to sell me some nylons out of a suitcase, said they'd fallen off the back of a lorry but if he thought I would fork out 1/6d he had another think coming, I can buy them cheaper at RAF Binbrook! One of the hangars had been transformed into the Forties with Union Flags, marquees, stalls, a stage with a live band, tables & chairs, dance floor and most importantly, unlimited tea & coffee. The Jump Jive Boogie Dance Club strutted their stuff to an excellent band whose singer was a Frank Sinatra sound-alike. Scunthorpe ATC looked after us and sold raffle tickets. We were all summoned outside around midday to see the Red Arrows taxiing on the runway, the pilots waving as they passed by and the sun came out. Although we've all seen the Red Arrows several times before, it’s never been at such close quarters and to watch them do a 30 minute display over the airfield, just for us, was a real privilege. Oh, alright, it was a training exercise. Apparently, the red & blue smoke they use in display costs a whopping £4,000, the chemical is mixed in a special shed at the side of the airfield. Lunch was next, tables groaning with sandwiches, pastries, quiches, every scrummy homemade cake you could think of, fruit flans and strawberries & cream. Following the raffle, splendid prizes in aid of "Hounds for Heroes", which incidentally raised a magnificent £700, we were entertained by Pollyplatt Community Primary School Choir, ages 9-11, conducted by their teacher Mrs Grebby, who sang all the wartime songs: Pack Up Your Troubles, White Cliffs of Dover, We'll Meet Again, Wish Me Luck, Rule Britannia and many more. The children then came round and chatted to everyone. After some more eating, drinking and dancing it was time to go. What a memorable day for everyone and many thanks to Kettle Funeral Services for arranging such a special event. End of Part One. It’s time to put the kettle on, make a cup of tea and return for RAF Scampton, Part Two. Because the RAF Scampton Museum was closed for refurbishments during our visit, Kettles insisted on taking us back to Scampton when it re-opened. On Saturday 14th July we made the return journey but this time in the company limousines. I'm sure the drivers have never had such lively passengers but it was an unusual situation, to say the least. Our guide at RAF Scampton gave us a bit of a tour round the camp before we arrived at the Museum. There was a lot to see and learn about Bomber Command, the Dambusters and Guy Gibson; they have preserved his office which was interesting. There are souvenirs to buy and a nice little rest room with refreshments. We then had a look at the RAF Scampton Firefighter's Museum. This is still under construction but there was plenty to see including a huge model collection and a trophy room. Lots of polishing there! So, another lovely day at RAF Scampton, if you get a chance to visit the museum we can highly recommend it. Huge thanks again to Kettle Funeral Services for their

care, attention and chauffeuring and we look forward to maybe arranging some joint events. Andrea Shepherd. RAF East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre visit We have arranged a coach trip to go from the Club on Tuesday 18th September for the day. The Lancaster there will be doing two taxi runs during the day, the NAAFI will be open for refreshments and lunch and the exhibitions there are all extremely interesting. Cost will be only £10 per person, including coach travel and entry into RAF East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre. The coach will leave the RAFA Club at 0900hrs and leave RAF East Kirkby at 1700hrs, returning at approx 1830hrs. There is a list up in the Club, so get in early if you would like to go! Any further details or payment to Donna Flint please. Further information can be found at www.lincsaviation.co.uk Branch and Club meeting The next Branch and Club committee meeting will be on Monday 3rd September at 2000hrs. The Club will be open for members and guests as well. Thursday nights Numbers drawn out this month on Thursday nights in the Membership Draw were: Thurs 5th July - H Lindsey would have won £140 if they had been in Thurs 12th July – K Perkins would have won £145 Thurs 19th July – B Thorpe would have won £150 Thurs 26th July – P Paintney would have won £155 The next draw is on Thursday 2nd August with £160 to be won, so good luck everyone! Don’t forget the rules for the draw; you have to be IN the Club at 9.30pm and have your membership card with you! There is also an excellent fun quiz, bit of Bingo (run by a Rock Ape and an RAF Fireman), sometimes another quiz and a general good night on Thursdays, so come down and give it a try! Front garden Many thanks go to Pat and Colin Howard for doing such a great job in making the front garden at the Club look so attractive and colourful. All the work they do, like everyone else, is voluntary and a couple of times a week they can be found cutting the hedge, weeding the borders and tidying up the rubbish. The geraniums are looking particularly beautiful due to being watered and cared for every day. Thanks, Colin and Pat, you do a fantastic job! A very special evening for Cyril Monks

On Saturday 14 th July, the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Branch held a very special ‘This is Your

Life’ evening for Branch member Cyril Monks. Members of Cyril’s family had travelled from

as far away as New York and Omagh in Ireland to help celebrate Cyril’s very special

evening.

Cyril’s colourful life, researched and presented by Graham Malster and Bill McCann, was a complete surprise to him. He was asked to come to the Club and told that he was being presented with his recently awarded, and most deserved, RAF Association Presidential Certificate, but we all knew better! Pam Golds, Cyril’s niece from Norfolk, kept her uncle away from the Club on the day whilst all the sneaky preparations were being made, only delivering him at the requisite time of 8pm. Around 80 people crammed into the Club for the evening to see Cyril being honoured in this way, and Graham Malster introduced the evening by playing the famous ‘This is Your Life’ music. His family, listening from upstairs, came in one-by-one including his daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Peter Savage-Jones, two of Cyril’s grandsons, Darren and Simon and two great-grandchildren, Zak and Katie all from High Wycombe. Next to be introduced was Cyril’s cousin, Sue Dewhurst, from London, who last saw Cyril about 4 years ago, followed by his cousin (by marriage) Dominic Pinto from Omagh, Northern Ireland who Cyril hasn’t seen for 35 years! The last of the family was his cousin, Pamela Dryden, who made the trip all the way from New York to see Cyril, and who was brought up with him in their earlier years. (L-R Back Row, Graham Malster (Branch Vice-Chair), Cousin Pamela Dryden from NY, Great-grandson Zak, Cousin Dominic Pinto from Ireland, Grandson Simon, Daughter Lynne, Cyril Monks, Grandson Darren, Neil Gammon (Branch President), Bill McCann (Branch Chairman) Front Row, Great-grandaughter Katie, Son-in-law Peter, Cousin Sue Dewhurst and Niece Pam

There then followed a slide and film show, narrated by Graham using photographs and information given by the family and also gleaned from Cyril himself over a few whiskies at the Club! Cyril was born in Streatham, London in 1923 to Lucy and Tom Monks. All his mother’s family were in the theatre and his mother was an actress who went under the name of Lucy Miller. She was once an understudy to Dame Sybil Thorndike and

was a collector of engagement rings, we found out! His father was an engineer in the Merchant Navy and was away from home a lot of the time. At the age of 7, the young Cyril Monks started his acting career, enrolling in the Italia Conti School of Acting. He appeared in Hitchcock’s ‘Murder’ and ‘Cottage on Dartmoor’ and also in the 1930’s comedy ‘The Black Hand Gang’. He was good friends with Lewis Gilbert, who went on to become a famous film director. However, Cyril’s acting career was short-lived as his father insisted that he went to College to train as an engineer at the age of 12. In 1939, war loomed and Cyril wanted to be a pilot in the RAF, so he lied about his aged and enlisted. He was sent to Blackpool where his drill instructor was none other than Max Wall! However, with his eyesight not being good enough, Cyril was turned down for pilot training and was instead sent to Whale Island in Portsmouth, where he was one of twelve airmen to be trained as deep sea divers in the RAF. Promoted to Corporal, he was sent to Gambia in West Africa in charge of a sea-plane tender where he was given a top-secret mission! Corporal Monks was summoned by Lord Trenchard to take his boat to be refitted and then given instructions to go and moor up in a secret location. Cyril took his modified tender and crew and waited until a sea-plane landed. His mission was to take President Roosevelt from the plane, in his wheelchair (hence the modified boat) to a waiting cruiser, where the President went on to Casablanca to meet with Winston Churchill to discuss ending the war! After Africa, Cyril was posted to Air Sea Rescue at Ramsgate, rescuing downed pilots from the North Sea. In those days, the crew had to dive into the freezing waters to bring the pilots out and Cyril’s strong swimming skills served him, and the rescued pilots, well. We watched a short Pathe Newsreel piece of the time, in which an Air Sea Rescue boat –a Whaleback High Speed Launch - was dispatched to carry out such a rescue. Many tales were told about Cyril’s days in RAF Air Sea Rescue, including the time that they took a boat out to search for pilots and found themselves near Holland. It was thick fog, but they could hear a foreign language being spoken on the nearby beach. As the fog quickly cleared, they suddenly found themselves staring at a Tiger Tank with its German crew having a cigarette break next to it! When the Germans spotted the boat, they jumped into the tank and started firing at it while the boat sped away...leaving the back of it peppered with gunshot holes! Posted then to Grimsby Docks, Cyril met his wife, Gladys towards the end of the war. He left the RAF and went to work for Walls where, coincidentally, the MD was the son of Lord Trenchard. This stood Cyril in good stead as word soon spread around the factory that Cyril ‘knew the boss’. Cyril also opened a Club in Brompton Road, London, which was frequented by many ‘celebrities’, including the Kray twins, Jack Slipper of Scotland Yard and many more. In 1954, Cyril’s acts of heroism continued with a man’s rescue from the Serpentine in Hyde Park. He was told of a man who was in trouble in the water and Cyril dived in and saved him, having his boots stolen for his trouble. Staying with a keen interest in boats, he also had a keen interest in cars. For three years running, he entered the race to Monaco, winning the first two years and losing out to Jimmy Greaves in the third year. The following year, he and Jimmy trained

together, with Cyril navigating, but they didn’t end up racing. Later, he entered a version of the Monte Carlo rally and was presented with a trophy by the racing driver, Graham Hill. As well as mixing with the rich and famous, Cyril was also known by HM the Queen Mother! His first encounter with her was when he was a landlord in Shepherd’s Bush in London. One of his flats was rented by a driver who drove a van for the dress designer, Norman Hartnell. One morning, the van bearing the ‘By Royal Appointment’ crest failed to start, so the driver asked Cyril to run him up to Clarence House to deliver a dress to the Queen Mother. She came out to meet them both and enquired after Cyril. A few years, being the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, she was asked to unveil a stained-glass window in Dover. Cyril, being then Chairman of the Air Sea Rescue Association, was presiding at the event. She looked at Cyril very carefully, before remarking that, “We’ve met before.” This was one of several occasions that she and Cyril met and they became well known to each other. His long list of celebrity acquaintances include singer Terence Trent D’Arby, who once spent nearly 24 hours having his hair braided at Cyril’s Afro-Caribbean hairdresser’s in London, the first one of its kind to open up. Cyril is also well known to Robbie Williams (we were all hoping he would appear at Cyril’s night!) as Cyril’s nephew is Robbie’s sound engineer. Cyril often goes to concerts that he performs in and Robbie calls him ‘Grandad’. Throughout the evening, Cyril elaborated on the highlights of his life and narrated on the photographs being shown. It was an extremely entertaining evening and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

Air Commodore (Rtd) Neil Gammon, Grimsby & Cleethorpes Branch President, then thanked Cyril for all his hard work for the Branch over the last 24 years as Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary and presented his RAF Association Presidential Certificate to a loud and prolonged round of applause from everybody. He was also presented with an engraved whisky tumbler and bottle of whisky from Branch and Club Chairman, Bill McCann.

Cyril gave a very emotional thank you to everyone for coming along and Graham Malster added that it had been “a great honour to present this evening and that nothing had given him greater pleasure.” Everyone sang, ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow’ and raised their glasses to toast a great Branch member, a fellow RAF comrade and a thoroughly great gentleman! Conference Savings Fund Just to remind members, anyone wishing to spread the cost for a trip to the RAF

Association Area or National Conference can save the money at the Club over the year for their accommodation. The Area Conference is usually at the end of March and the National Conference is during May. The Branch will cover the cost for transport, so any members wishing to go will only have to pay for drinks over the weekend as all food is included. Cost will be approximately £130-£150 for the weekend. Bargain! Wings First of all, many apologies to Lisa Chamberlain for missing her off the thank-you’s for Armed Forces Day. Thank you, Lisa. Everyone worked really hard and it was a long and tiring day, but thank you everyone who helped in any way. We started July with a visit to North Coates Flying Club, on the old RAF North Coates base, for their Wings and Wheels event. The sun shone all day on Saturday but it was cold on Sunday. However, we collected £121 for Wings and had a good time there, with lots going on. Barbara and Mike Speakman looked after us all extremely well and the fantastic barbeque food kept us going all day! We also collected at Brigg Garden Centre on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July. There were only four of us collecting at the weekend and it would have been nice to have more volunteers to help, but we managed with a little help from the excellent cafe there! We collected £430.59. The Firefighters’ Fete was on Thurday 26th July and what a great day we had! The organisers looked after us really well and we had a great time making gliders and RAF Association windmills with children. We collected £305, which is a great amount! The Club being open some weekends is becoming very popular and we are seeing more and more people pop in for a drink and a chat while out in Cleethorpes. Look out for future dates of the Club being open. We will be open every Saturday in August as there is an air display every Saturday at 4pm on the sea front, just outside the Club. Our total collected so far this Wings year is now just over £10,000! We still have a few events and collections to go so please join in when you can. All the Wings merchandise – wristbands, Wings teddies, mugs, aeroplane lapel badges, highly sought after RAF Association rubber ducks etc, is available from behind the bar at the Club. If you would like to be more involved in Wings in ANY way, please get in contact with me and we’ll be only too pleased to have you in the Team! A group of men, all age 40 and lifelong friends discussed where they should meet the following week for lunch. Finally, it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the waitresses there were gorgeous, with tight skirts, perky breasts, great legs and nice bottoms. Ten years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally, it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the food and service was good and the wine selection was excellent. Ten years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally, it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because they could dine in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean. Ten years later, at age 70, the friends met and discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally, it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible, had clean toilets, and a lift. Ten years later, at age 80, the friends met again and discussed where they should meet for lunch. Cenotaph Ceremony - London - 11th November 2012 The Royal British Legion, on behalf of the Home Office, will be organizing the ex -service contingents

attending the Parade and Service at the Cenotaph, Whitehall, on Remembrance Day, 11th November 2012

A representative of the Overseas Area will lay this year the Association’s wreath; Stewards will also be

positioned at the Cenotaph to lay wreaths on behalf of the detachments as they march past.

Contingents will assemble and disperse at Horse Guards Parade

Due to the number of personnel on parade the overall length of the march past has increased and I would ask

you to ensure that your members are aware of the physical demands of standing in Whitehall for at least 1

hour and then marching for a distance of 1.5 miles, possible in inclement weather.

We have been asked to remind all on parade to help to ensure that behaviour and dress standards match the

dignity of the occasion. There have been a few rather regrettable lapses that have offended the majority of

those marching and the general public.

In view of the current security arrangements, only holders of admission tickets will be allowed to join the

parade. All participants are liable to a security search on the day.

The South East Office will be administering the ticket allocation for the event this year. Peter Stockdale

would therefore be grateful to receive applications for tickets at your earliest convenience. Contact details:
