August is here and has it been a busy month for us already. We had a Chicken Cook Out on the 4th of Au-

gust at Bob’s House of Honda and it turned out to be a success. We sold pre-sale tickets to see how many

chickens we were going to cook and ordered some extra for walk-ups. We ended up cooking 168 chickens and

sold every one of them. This was a Chapter Fund Raiser. We also gave away a 410 Shotgun that day. Debbie

Seaton made the Bake Beans and Cole Shaw and they were to die for!

We had our Chapter Meeting that day also, Chapter TN-K came up to join us, even as HOT

as it was, they stayed all day with us. Thanks Chapter K for being there. Even Alan & Glenda

Keough from District came up and hung out. OH yes, we got pictures of Glenda even working,

making plates for the customers. At 3:00pm we all went into Bob’s Honda and had our meet-

ing. Man, was it COOL in there after being outside all day cooking and selling the chickens.

Sandy Hayes stepped up and was assigned as our NEW MEC. The paper work was filled out and we got it

to the District MEC to be signed and filed. Reginald and Kim did not get to make it, they were coming back

from Washington State. They were going to be at the cook out, but some storms held them back for some time.

They got back in West Memphis about 8:00pm that day.

Now we are working on FUN DAY, which is the 25th of August. I hope to have a good turn-out this year, it

was a little cooler last year when we held it. This year it is earlier and on the inside where an A/C is and it is at

Natchez Trace State Park. Signs will be posted to help people find their way to the Lodge. We

are planning a Bike Show, Corn Bag Toss Contest and many games for prizes. I hope to see a

lot of my friends there.

So, come out and have a good time at our FUN DAY and maybe you will take some of the

prizes or money home with you. Even if you don’t win a prize, you will go home with the BEST

prize of all, the FUN and Memories of a GOOD TIME.

Until then,

Ride Safe, Ride Often, Have Fun

You know, things happen in your life that you know why they happen, but then, there are things that happen you

just can’t figure out. So this my new out look on life,

“TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF MY LIFE.”

Have you really set down and thought about what gets you through the day. I know now that each day that I get up, the number one reason is the Lord let me have one more day to spend with my family, my children, my grand-

children, my brothers and sisters, but one more day to spend with my best friend and my wife, Debbie. I know she

would stand by me no matter what was put in our way. So each morning now, I thank the Lord for all of this.

Now on with the rest, the weather is getting better, and a whole lot more enjoyable to ride in. August is almost

gone now and September is upon us. I hope to see everyone at the Fun Day on August 25th. Going to be a lot of

fun and friendship. Let’s all keep making the Thursday night rides if you can, I know we can’t make all of them

but make the ones you can. And congratulations to Sandra for accepting the position of Membership Enhance-

ment. I know she will do the best job she can.

Ride A Lot, Be Safe, Have Fun

The August Funny!!

Hehehe! Too cute! Now that’s funny-I don’t

care who you are. Thanks Eldon.

Now that’s bashful!

Motorcycle Gear for Staying Safe Picture this, the door swings open, you strut through in your black leather jacket and boots, doing your best to

conjure Marlon Brando in the Wild One. Everyone turns; you are clearly the coolest person in the room. There is clearly no better reason than that feeling to buy motorcycle gear. Well, except this one – safety. The clothing we choose to wear during riding is the only thing between our skin and the road and it is incredibly important. A study

done in Munich in 1986 found that motorcyclists wearing protective gear (heavy jacket, gloves, boots etc.) could expect a reduction in injuries of 30% or more. ("Modern Armor", Motorvike.com) So what do you need?

Jacket

The head, arms, and legs are the most often injured in a crash. (Motorcycle Safety Brochure from the NHTSA) Learn

how to keep your head safe by reading our section about helmets. To protect your arms, you need a good motorcycle

jacket. A good jacket will be made of nylon, leather, or Kevlar and be well constructed. Check out the seams at any of your sharp points (elbows, shoulders, etc). The stitching should be strong and enforced at these points. Also, a good jacket will include heavy padding on the elbow, spine (yes, that's very important!) and the shoulders. Addition-

ally, if the jacket is nylon or Kevlar, it should include reflective stripes. Read more about reflectivity here and view some

reflectivity products.

Whether it means going to a store or ordering a couple of different jackets to try, the first time you buy a jacket,

you need to try it on and make sure it fits. An ill-fitting jacket might result in injury if the protective parts of the jacket shift during a fall or accident. But it can't be too tight, make sure you have room for a sweatshirt or vest on

cold days. Also, sit on your bike with the jacket on. It might feel great standing up but make sure it's long enough to cover your back while on your motorcycle and that it is not uncomfortable. Make sure the sleeves should be long enough to cover your wrists when your arms are on the handlebars.

If you are winter rider, check out jackets that have side laces and a belt that allow you to adjust the jacket to your body. This allows you to fit the jacket after putting on some warm layers. Many jackets have zip out linings, there-fore they can be used all year round. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are lucky enough to live in year round warm weather or are a summer rider, check out summer-only jackets which are thin and highly perforated for ventilation, but still have armor.

Pants

That covers the arms, now, let's address the legs. Many riders wear jeans, but it's worth it to invest in pants

made specifically for motorcycle riders. Like a jacket, good pants will be made of leather, nylon, or Kevlar. For winter riding, pants can not only offer protection, they can keep you warm. Insulated pants or chaps are a good choice and can be bought coated for rain resistance.

Riding Suits

If you are serious about riding, and want to really protect your limbs, you can invest in a one or two piece suit. Although a bit expensive, these offer substantial protection in case of a fall and go on and off quickly. If you are go-ing to the office, you can fit a suit right over your (other) suit or khakis. Look for a suit that offers lots of armor

pads, and has good venting; these can get hot in the summer.

We want YOU!

Page 5: August 2012 Newsletter

Gloves

Gloves should be worn regardless or weather, and there are different types for warm and cold weather. Warm weather gloves are usually leather or Kevlar and good ones have carbon fiber knuckle protection and are un-

insulated but provide protection should you fall.

Winter gloves provide the same level of protection, but are insulated. Waterproofing is also a good idea. Watch fit when buying gloves, if they are too bulky in the palm, you could lose the feel of the bike and the controls. Good gloves should also have long gauntlet cuffs that fit over your jacket sleeve to prevent wind from getting up your sleeve. Watch any seams between your hand and the grip or between fingers. A couple of hours with a seam rubbing your hand and you'll be hurting. Reflectivity and bright colors add to us being seen and this can be carried all the way to our gloves. Here are

some reflective riding gloves featuring 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material.

Boots

Whew! You're finally dressed and ready to go riding. Until you look down and see your bare toes wiggling around. Last thing you need are some protective boots.

A motorcyclist should have boots with a short heel; this allows the boot to fit on the motorcycle peg while still providing good ankle support. Boots should be at least 6" tall as that will offer some ankle protection. Boots can be as high as 17", which are useful for use against cold wind. Leather is a great choice for a boot, as leather provides much greater protection than that stylish, yet utterly thin,

fabric on your new Nikes. Make sure the boot has a good, durable rubber sole that provides traction and slip resistance. The thicker the sole, the more the boot will absorb the vibration of the bike.

It has been a great summer for us and also a busy one of travel. This year we have been blessed to travel to Cen-

tral America (Costa Rica and Nicaragua) and the upper western states (Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana,

Washington, and Nebraska); the latter by Goldwing. We have seen so many of God’s nature wonders. To use

the word awesome or spectacular is an understatement. These words cannot begin to describe what we saw. You

will just have had to see them for yourself. However, we are sharing a few of our wonder pictures with you! Until

next time, have fun and ride safe.

This picture is one of my favorites because it is proof that I can operate outside the box. If you were not at the

Dyersburg Dinner Ride in June, you didn’t see me on the floor having this picture made. They tell me it was even

more funny watching me try to get up from the floor. My point is—-I am ready to have more fun than a person

deserves to have. I hope you continue to do the same.

I will be getting right to work and read all those manuals and look at all those guidelines because I want us to continue to reach for the top in all categories for awards. You are a great group of bikers and I do enjoy visiting

together. I have an idea or two for some future fun but I sure would like to hear from you on what you would like

to do also. So please take time to share your ideas and we will add them to our list of FUN possibilities.

Boy the Grilled Chicken Cookout was great. Hot but great. Bob’s Honda enjoyed having us

at the lot and came to enjoy the food as well. They had a great idea, too—do this again but

do it when it is cooler. Avery offered me an opportunity to cool off when the steakhouse wa-

ter sprinkler came on across the lot. Yep—I took him up on it. It was REFRESHING.

Thanks guys for all your hard work.

Then we did another dinner ride to Lexington. We surely do have fun just sittin’ and vistin’. Thanks to Tony,

Reginald and Kim for the surprise presentation as the Member Enhancement. The certificate looks great.

Let me take this chance to also remind you that we have all heard that motorists say we are sometimes hard to

see. So as you travel on your way across Tennessee (or whatever state your travels may take you), be alert to the

possibility that others will not see you and practice safety. See you at the next gathering. And remember it is all

about having FUN!

SAFETY FIRST

THEN ALL THE FUN YOU CAN HANDLE

allowing us to use the facili-ties. The family dog came to see how the chicken was com-ing along. I later found her

August has been a busy month for Chapter N. We sold smoked chickens early in the

month at Bob’s Honda. Hot did not describe the weather. We all almost melted down but

the day was a success. We had our meeting at the dealership. Just last Saturday we

had our FUN DAY. The weather was great. We had over 100 in attendance. Chapter TN

-W2 was the largest Chapter there. Chapter TN-T won the plaque for the Traveling the

Furtherest. Don’t remember all the names of the people of the Bike Show, but we will get

that info out in next months issue. We also will have pictures of the winners to show too.

We had 3 new members. The Fun Day was their first meeting. We welcomed back 3 other

members that hadn’t been to a gathering in a long time. Gary Woodard, Fred & Kitty

Westenberger and Tom Duncan, we are glad you’re back. We had lots of prizes and good

food. Sounded like everyone there have a good time. Jeff was on his best behavior. Actu-

ally he was too busy to do much cutting up. After cleaning up, several from Chapter N

went to Dickson for Chapter K ‘s gathering.

Tony Douglas, Eldon & Debbie Seaton, Nolan Nation, Shannon & Karen Seaton and

their son Jacob. Sandy Hayes, Reginald & Kim Seymour were the ones that went to Chap-

ter TN-K meeting. For a very first day, Shannon Seaton got a full day of it, as a new mem-

ber, he and his son, had all day of Fun Day and then a Chapter meeting, WOW! Now

that’s the kind of members we want. His wife met them at Farmers Market in Dickson, TN.

It was her very first meeting.

It was good to see all the other Chapters come out to have FUN and support our Chap-

ter. We hope to see all of them at the District Picnic on the 29th of Sept. We even had

some from District at our Fun Day, Richard & Becky Griffin, Jim Lester, Glenda & Alan

Keough and Reginald & Kim Seymour, but they are ours anyway. Chapter TN-N pulled off

another GREAT EVENT, if you missed it, you missed a GREAT TIME!!

Page 9: August 2012 Newsletter

Well I am not sure what happened here. After the monthly meeting in July, I found myself thinking about in-

terviewing for the position of member enhancement and now here I am. I am really excited about having this op-

portunity. I cannot remember when I have had so much FUN!. Following behind Reginald and Kim is a little

scary but I know they will still be near to help me through a transition time.

In case you did not know this—I really do like preparing this newsletter. So today I just want to share some of

the memories.

Sometimes you have seen newspapers that make corrections to prior publications. Well

here is my first. This smiling duo is (Jeanette and Gattie—you all knew that). Sorry la-

News From Region N

It gives us pleasure to pass along the following information, pertaining to the selection of Mike and Angie Mitchell

as International Deputy Directors, supporting Regions L, D, B, A, N and K. We had previously announced that

Mike and Angie would be stepping down as Virginia District Directors, and that they would continue to be active

in GWRRA. How was that for a forecast. Please join us in congratulating Mike and Angie on their new positions,

on behalf of each of your Districts. Mike’s email address is: [email protected]

News From District

Finally, we get a break from the extreme temperatures and this makes for better riding, of

course this also means more rain. We need to be even more careful on our bikes is these con-

ditions, so prepare yourself, your bike and enjoy the ride.

We have many activities on the calendar for the remaining months so mark your days and let’s

get on the road. The District Picnic is on the 29th of September at the Gladeville Community

Center. You know your District Team is working real hard to show

everyone a good time. There will be great food, fun games and socializing with all your friends from across the

state. We hope to see all of you there.

Now is the time to be planning to attend the District Ops Meeting, November 10th at Patterson Park Community

Center. This is a mandatory meeting for Chapter Officers to get all the updates from Home Office for the upcom-

ing year. Please mark your calendar to attend this very important event. Since space is very limited we ask that

only the Chapter Officers or prospective Officers attend.

Many of you have seen the new Flyer for Spring Fling 2013, “Winging Around Choo- Choo Town”. It has been

sent to all the Chapters. If you have not received yours, ask your Chapter Director and start planning your ride

on the train. Will you be the Engineer, Conductor, Brakeman, Signalman, or just the passenger. What will be

the Chapter Challenge, how can we top last years? Rest assured, I am already working on this.

Many of you have taken some very interesting trips this summer. Be sure to share the stories and pictures with

your Chapters for the newsletters. We really enjoy reading these and wishing we could have been along for the

ride.

Chapter visitations are alive and well in Tennessee. The Plaques are getting a lot of road time and I think we have

captured the Region Plaque for good. It has been in Tennessee’s possession for a long time. I challenge the other

Districts to come get it.

We will see y’all soon, ride safe and have fun,

Come Spend The Summer With Me: The Travels of Nolan Nation

Hello this is Nolan Nation the youngest member of Chapter N.

Well I just got back from California on my summer vacation. It was really fun. I got to see my cousins down

there. They taught me how to surf and I wiped out a few times. I also saw Kelly Slater (pro surfer).

Then I went to Vines Beach it was also fun.

I almost forgot, I took in a ball game while I was there.

I have been spending some time going to the river and catching fish.

Took a few days and went to the mountains in Magi Valley, North Carolina. I tried trout fishing but no luck.

Then I made some new friends.

Then I had to go to school.

I wish I could go back to California.

See you next month.

Gold Wings Over St. Jude

Every year a low rumble steadily grows across the campus of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This welcome sound escalates to a roar as more than 275 Gold Wing motorcycle riders arrive at St. Jude for their annual visit known as Wings Across Tennessee. The Tennessee Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is one of a growing number of motorcycle enthusiast clubs that participate in Cruisin’ for St. Jude, a volunteer-based fund-raising event. Participants in Cruisin' events ride and drive across the country to help raise funds for St. Jude. Many of the riders who participate in the Wings Across Tennessee

travel more than 500 miles as part of the event. The two-day trip begins at Atlas Honda in Bristol, Virginia, and continues through Knoxville, Tennessee, where riders stop for a charity lunch with proceeds going to St. Jude. After a few more stops for fuel, the riders stop for the night in Dickson. New riders join the group all along their route. The next morning, after a stop in Jackson for a break and snack, the group concludes

its ride at St. Jude in Memphis. (Source is St. Jude website). See you this year on September 14-15, 2012.
