I have been in Samoyeds for almost 40 years. I purchased my first from Jeanne and Wayne Non- hof as a pet, her name was Sugar. Then, at a later date, I ran into Jeanne and Eve Rittberg at the Cascade fireman's picnic. Eve had done a breeding with Jeanne and had a show puppy for sale. The breeding was out of Ch Moonlighter's Ima Fire- cracker by BISS Ch Wolf River's Drumlin ROMC. The puppy came to be known as Ch Alever's Crystal Col- lection, my first champion, and it went on from there. I have finished my quota of champions for a small kennel. After that I co-owned Alever's Four x Four O the Floor with Eve, and she was the start of my kennel. I have now fin- ished my latest champion that is the sixth generation of my breedings. This

month’s spotlight is

on Pat Backhaus. Pat was

our GMSF 2010 Secretary and

enjoys her retirement as a “snow bird”.

Thanks to Pat for all her great answers!

How long have you owned Samoyeds?

I have been in Samoyeds

for almost 40 years. I

purchased my first from

Jeanne and Wayne Non-

hof as a pet, her name

was Sugar. Then, at a

later date, I ran into

Jeanne and Eve Rittberg

at the Cascade fireman's

picnic. Eve had done a

breeding with Jeanne

and had a show puppy

for sale. The breeding

was out of Ch

Moonlighter's Ima Fire-

cracker by BISS Ch Wolf River's

Drumlin ROMC. The puppy came to

be known as Ch Alever's Crystal Col-

lection, my first champion, and it went

on from there. I have finished my

quota of champions for a small kennel.

After that I co-owned Alever's Four x

Four O the Floor with Eve, and she was

the start of my kennel. I have now fin-

ished my latest champion that is the

sixth generation of my breedings. In the

meantime, I was looking for a very spe-

cial male to complete the picture.

That is when we went

on a trip to Colorado to

look at puppies at the

Krystall kennels owned

by Nancy Golden. We

picked out our puppy

and made the trip home

with Ch Krystall's Per-

snickety Edition BISS

who finished with three

majors by the age of

two. He was my first

and only dog to have a

Best in Specialty win at

the Minnesota Spe-

cialty.

I bred Jimmy with Ch Romsey's Lord

of the Rings which produced Ch

Alever's Custom Cruiser and my Ch

Persnickety's Sweet and Sassy.

Litter Announcement

Sire: BISS Ch. Moonlighter's Grandstander ROMX

Dam: Ch. Moonlighter's Laffin Eyes CHIC #82471

As Grandstander has been dead for 15 years, this was a frozen semen surgical insemination and pretty dear to my

heart.

We have a litter of eight, all pretty much the same size and all nursing

well. Poppy is a good mother and she has them all lined up at her milk sta-tion like little piglets in a row. Four

boys, four girls.

Congrats to Jeanne and mama Poppy!

Our next meeting will be held 30

minutes after Best of Breed at the

Kenosha Kennel Club show.

for doing such a great job.

It was a great day for Mendel’s whole fam-

ily. His half brother, Mater, was awarded

Best of Opposite Sex, and his daddy (Rico)

was awarded Select Dog to finish his

Grand Championship!

Mendel’s sister, Heli, went BOW on Sun-

day to finish her Championship while Men-

del got Reserve Winners Dog. On Monday

Mendel was awarded Winners Dog but just

couldn’t keep it together to have a chance

at a cross over ma-

jor. He went Re-

serve Winner on

Tuesday to finish off

the long weekend.

Left: Mendel and

Mom having a talk

in the ring

Having only about a year of showing under

my belt, Mendel and I are never quite sure

how things are going to go when we walk

into a ring. I did everything I could think

of to give us our best chance — we had a

“handling class” the night before in the

fairground parking lot with a group of

friends to get in some “fake ring time” and

I made sure to get him a little tired out

before we went in the ring.

Fortunately for us, Saturday at the Wau-

kesha Kennel Club

shows could not

have gone more per-

fectly. We managed

to put on our best

performance yet and

pull out our first ma-

jor win under judge

Sakura Moses. I am

so proud of my boy

As I continued on, Jimmy was bred to Karin Nyhuis's

Ch Bramblewood's Quick Claim (Boka) to produce Ch

Persnickety's Miss Ellie whom I co-owned with John

and Deb Myrechuck. She was my first OFA Excellent

and finished with 3 majors, which at that time was a

big thing. She also was a group placer, her first being

under Anne Rodgers Clark. I kept her brother Ch Per-

snickety's Road to Fame as well. His son, Ch Per-

snickety's Pt Cruiser (pictured Pg 1), went winners

dog at the Minnsota specialty 2003, and has champion

offspring. He is now 11 years old and doing well.

Ch Persnickety's

Sweet and Sassy was

bred to

Ch Snowberry's Bur-

ton of Mauyak to pro-

duce two boys. One

of them was Ch Per-

snickety's One Sassy

Kid, known as Simba

from the Lion King

movie, which was

popular at that time.

When it was time to

look for a girl for him

there was a puppy

just looking for me

out of a litter Karen

Brooks had done with

Jeanne Nonhof. She

came to be known Ch Moonlighter's Applause. I bred

her to my Simba to get my special girl, Ch Persnick-

ety's Sassy Niner (pictured) she was born 9-9-1999

and recently went to the rainbow bridge. . Nina was

bred to Ch Chatanika's Winter Diamond and five lit-

tle munchkins hit the world. Ch Persnickety's Sierra

O'Alever (owned by Alever Kennels), Persnickety's

Winter Delight (Best Bred By at the 2004 Samoyed

Nationals), and Persnickety's Sparkl'n the Snow ,

(Chloe, the sparkle in my eye) were among the pup-

pies in that litter.

Chloe was bred to Chatanika's Moonlit Run to pro-

duce two puppies. Lucky for me, there was both a boy

and a girl. I retired from work and decided to spend

the winters in Arizona, so when they were 10 weeks

old we all spent our first winter in Arizona. They had a

blast as there is a huge dog park for them to play in

and socialize. Tunwar (above), named by my grand-

son, (Ch Persnickety's Moonlit Snow) finished with

three majors and is working toward his Grand Cham-

pionship. Tunwar’s sister Hannah (pictured below),

Persnickety's Misty Sky, has both her majors and only

needs singles to finish. Tunwar has an OFA good and

I am so proud

Hannah has an

OFA Excellent!

Eyes are clear on

both.

That is my story

and I am sticking

to it!

What are some of the most notable dogs you have

owned/produced?

My Miss Ellie was the super show dog just loved to

show. Chloe was my sweet heart, as far as I can see

they are all special to me and of course will never for-

get my Snicker's.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year,

where would it be?

I don't know I kind of like it the way I have it now

here in Wisconsin for the summer and Arizona in the

winters.

How do you spend your free time?

Lot's of camping, horseback riding and camping with

them, I have a big garden and a lot of flower beds.

What is your motto in life?

I live for every day enjoy it to the fullest to

share with my husband and keep our health.

Who do you admire?

I have made many wonderful friends over the

years doing this Samoyed adventure. I admire

them all.

Are there any Sammy adventures you have not

tried yet, but would like to?

I have had adventures with them already pack

hiking, swimming, herding and agility. They go

with us where ever we go.

Do you have pets other than Samoyeds?

Yes I have my favorite horse, Willy, with whom I do

a lot of trail riding. Three kitties.

What is your most memorable dog show / dog com-

petition moment?

First one was when my friend and I were heading to

Minnesota in October and got buried in a snowstorm,

21 inches to be exact. It took us all night to get there.

We followed the snow plow in. Got there and there

was a semi jack knifed in our exit. Got to the hotel

and stuck in the yard, emptied an ash tray on the

ground and away we went to our room. What a night .

That was the weekend my boy Snickers went best in

Specialty 1991. I also was also thrilled when my

Nina took back to back majors at our Double Expo-

sure Specialty.

Fanciers, Inc. (GMSF) states that the club “Shall do all in

its power to protect and advance the interest of the

breed.” In applying for and maintaining membership,

applicants agree to further the club’s objectives and con-

duct all their activities in connection with the breed in

accordance with this Code of Eth-

ics. A member of GMSF should

conduct activities as follows:

Breeding:

Each litter is the result of conscien-

tious planning, including consid-

eration of the parents’ freedom

from hereditary, defects, sound-

ness, temperament the general con-

formance to the official standard of

ment of puppies, both pet and show potential. The

mal from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, an

radiologist and has its eyes certified free from genetically

transmitted defects by a certified Veterinary Ophthal-

mologist. The GMSF member knowingly breeds Samo-

yeds only to other registered Samoyeds.

puppies, or adults to pet shops, wholesale dealers, contest

sponsors, or anyone who is known to degrade the Samo-

yed breed or purebred dogs, or to individuals contemplat-

ing breeding and/or sale to the aforementioned. The

GMSF member provides and requires written agreements

of good kennel practice and provides all

communicable disease, consulting as neces-

sary with a licensed veterinarian. The

GMSF member will not exhibit, release, or

otherwise expose any Samoyed, which is

known to have been exposed to a communi-

cable disease until the end of the incubation period for

that disease.

The GMSF member accurately registers his Samoyeds

with the American Kennel Club and abides by the AKC

rules and regulations.

Exhibition:

The GMSF member exhibits Samoyeds in conformation

and obedience competition in conformity with the rules

of the American Kennel Club and in the spirit of good

sportsmanship. When traveling with Samoyeds, the

GMSF member takes reasonable precautions to maintain

hotels and show grounds in a clean condition.

of Ethics, the GMSF member conducts himself or herself

in the best interest of the breed and as he or she would

like to be treated in similar circumstances. Failure to con-

duct oneself in compliance with the Code of Ethics shall

be considered prejudicial to the best interest of the Samo-

yed breed.

members sections. However, I am ALWAYS

looking for volunteers to add to the publica-
