NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: AUGUST 13, 2013

Acclaimed choral ensemble Stile Antico and virtuoso violinist Isabelle Faust headline the August releases from harmonia mundi. Faust is joined by Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony in a recording of Bartók’s two Violin Concertos (p.7) and Stile Antico explores the music of the Tudor period in a recital entitled The Phoenix Rising (p.9). Also on harmonia mundi, the Ensemble Correspondances led by Sébastien Daucé debuts in a recording of sacred vocal music by Charpentier (p.8). Hyperion’s priority release of the month is a two-disc set of the complete music for violin and piano by Schubert featuring violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cédric Tiberghien. This month, we begin a new partnership with the enterprising and imaginative Scottish label Delphian. Among the five new releases offered, the key title is an album of German Romantic choral music entitled Deutsche Motette, which features the combined forces of the Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and the Choir of King’s College London (p.5). Expect even more exciting things from this label in future months. In non-classical releases, our focus title is from flamenco star Juan Carmona, whose new album Alchemya takes the genre on a trip to new and exciting destinations (p.22).

Marin Alsop débuts on harmonia mundi

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts (b. 1972) is known for his distinctive and richly colored musical voice. Making their label début, Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra perform Puts’s Symphony No. 4 (“From Mission San Juan”), inspired by Native American melodies. Opening this program of first recordings, Craig Hella Johnson leads Conspirare in two choral settings of texts by women poets: “To Touch the Sky” and “If I Were a Swan.”

Classics Today 10/10 reviews of recent releases

IMPORTMozart’s Requiem and Clarinet Concerto were both written in 1791, the final year of the composer’s tragically short life. The Requiem’s emotional power and magnificent choral writing have inspired countless composers, performers and

listeners ever since. The Clarinet Concerto was written for Anton Stadler, a famed virtuoso of the time. Mozart provided Stadler (and history) with a glorious composition - both poignant and technically challenging. These two cornerstones of classical music are performed here by clarinet soloist Benjamin Dieltjens, the Choir de Chambre de Namur and the New Century Baroque orchestra, all under the direction of Leonardo García Alarcón.

IMPORT Born in Chengdu, China, violinist Ning Feng studied at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London. The recipient of prizes at the Hanover International, Queen Elisabeth and Yehudi Menuhin

International violin competitions, Feng was also awarded first prize in the 2006 International Paganini Competition. Now based in Berlin and performing worldwide, Feng is developing an international reputation as an artist of great lyricism and tremendous bravura. This second volume in his series of works for solo violin features works by Bartók, Prokofiev and Hindemith.

IMPORTLa Pasionaria was the nickname of Dolores lbarruri, an inspirational figure to generations of Latin American women. Through the songs on Delphian’s album of the same name, singer Valentina Montoya Martínez tells stories of

life in her native Chile and of exile in England; stories of the high life, the low life, girls on the town, girls looking for love. This fascinating program also features music of the tango nuevo, represented here in six tracks by Astor Piazzolla, including a song and three instrumental interludes from his ‘operita’ Maria de Buenos Aires. Partnered with the ensemble Mr McFall’s Chamber, Martínez’s performances have an earthy intensity and sultry sensuality.

IMPORTThe inspirations behind these six British works for saxophone and piano are linked by the composers’ relationship to popular music, whether oblique, overt, or antagonistic. From the muscularity of Graham Fitkin to the blues-

drenched melancholy of Mark-Anthony Turnage, Edinburgh duo Sue McKenzie and Ingrid Sawers bring stylistic authority and idiomatic flair to everything they play on this, their debut recording. McKenzie is one of Scotland’s leading contemporary saxophonists, and has given the UK and Scottish premieres of many new works for saxophone. Ingrid Sawers is in demand as one of Scotland’s finest accompanists and chamber musicians.

IMPORTThe Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and The Choir of King’s College London are among the UK’s finest collegiate and university ensembles. The two groups regularly combine efforts for religious services, concerts, recordings and broadcasts, both in the UK and abroad. Here, Delphian presents a stunning collection of German Romantic choral works that displays the many talents of this unusual ‘superchoir.’ Richard Strauss’s sumptuous Deutsche Motette exemplifies Romantic choral opulence. Its complex polyphony is brought to thrilling life by this virtuoso cast of over sixty singers. The rest of the program explores the many facets of German music of the period. The singing throughout demonstrates the musical intensity, imagination and understanding of period style that are hallmarks of both choirs’ work.

IMPORTPianist Peter Hill’s Delphian recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II wowed critics across the board. On this eagerly anticipated release featuring Book I, Hill’s performances exhibit all the stellar qualities that were identified by

reviewers of his previous traversal - most particularly his warmth, clarity and insight. One of the leading British pianists of his generation, Hill is known for his performances and recordings of twentieth-century and contemporary music as well as the classical repertoire. His complete cycles of Messiaen and of Berg, Schoenberg and Webern have received superlative acclaim.

IMPORTThe ensemble Concerto Caledonia brings to life a key figure from the Golden Age of Scottish fiddle music, when the familiar forms of strathspey, reel and jig were just taking shape. ‘Red Rob’ Mackintosh, named in the customary

Gaelic fashion after the color of his hair, found himself a place in the orchestra of the Edinburgh Musical Society and set up business as a teacher. Airs, Minuets, Gavotts and Reels (1783) was his first published collection, and it represents his desire both to understand the musical world around him as fully as possible and to forge himself a career within it. Concerto Caledonia is one of Scotland’s premiere early music ensembles, and has built a reputation for reviving little known but important music. With their third disc on Delphian the band bring a vital part of Scotland’s heritage to a wider audience.

IMPORTOne of the great works of the 20th century, Bartók’s Violin Concerto No.2 has virtually eclipsed his first effort in the genre, written thirty years earlier. However, this youthful work, inspired by his passionate, unrequited love for the young violinist Stefi Geyer and rediscovered long after the composer’s death, deserves to be rediscovered. Isabelle Faust’s deep connection to Bartók’s music inspired her to explore a variety of original sources in an attempt to get closest to the composer’s true intentions. Joined by the insightful Daniel Harding leading the Swedish Radio Symphony, Faust offers definitive readings of these masterworks.

IMPORTThe harmonia mundi label, once well known for specializing in the French Baroque repertoire, makes a welcome and triumphant return to this treasure trove of musical delights. For their first release on harmonia mundi, Sébastien Daucé and the Ensemble Correspondances present a sumptuous interpretation of the six-voice motets composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier for the House of Guise. These works, which include the Litanies de la Vierge and the Miserere, are masterworks that exemplify Charpentier’s influence on the music of the Grand Siècle. The creative genius and intense fervor of this deeply spiritual music display the blend of French and Italian flavors that were his hallmark.

IMPORTHyperion welcomes back the duo of Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien for a double album of Schubert’s complete music for violin and piano. Their intelligence and technical prowess, seamless and intimate connection as performers and profound understanding of the music combine for magical performances. While still in his teens, Schubert wrote four works for violin and piano that could have been given the label ‘Sonata,’ yet none of the four was published with that title. The first three, completed in 1816, bear instead the designation of ‘Sonatina,’ perhaps to appeal to the amateur market. But these are highly accomplished works by the teenage composer that hint at compositions yet to come. The program also includes the Violin Sonata in A major, D574, the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasy in C major. Written in the last year of Schubert’s life, the Fantasy is truly a masterpiece and the composer’s greatest achievement in this genre, combining poignancy with sheer joy in life itself.

IMPORTThe Brabant Ensemble continues their investigation into unknown jewels of the Renaissance, researched by their director Stephen Rice and recorded with equal amounts of passion and erudition by the young singers of the group. Cipriano de Rore was and is principally known as a madrigal composer. This recording presents some of the least well-known works in de Rore’s output. It contains two mass settings based on French chansons, Missa a note negre on a composition by Rore himself, and Missa Doulce mémoire, which takes one of the sixteenth century’s greatest hits as its inspiration. Also included are three motets. Fratres: Scitote is apparently a unique instance of composition to its text: Saint Paul here tells the story of the Last Supper, in which Jesus takes bread, blesses and distributes it, and thereby institutes the ritual of Holy Communion.

IMPORTFrench composer Bruno Mantovani draws his inspiration from musical works of the past, from which he fashions thoroughly modern objects. This recording presents five pieces for strings and piano that “refer” to music of Franz Schubert, Béla Bartók, Maurice Ravel, and the most musicianly of all painters,

Paul Klee. These richly inventive works are in no sense pastiches or variations, but genuinely contemporary interpretations of masterpieces of musical and artistic history. Performed here by Trio Wanderer and pianist Claire Désert, these fascinating and accessible chamber works offer a wealth of musical delights.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDScholars and audiences alike consider Iberia to be a marvel of the piano repertoire - a work that presents Albéniz as a true heir to Chopin and Liszt. The great Spanish pianist Alicia de

Larrocha was a major exponent of the music of her country. Her performance of Iberia highlights the work’s flamenco roots, exploring its expressive luxuriance, Debussyian colors and oriental harmonies typical of the gypsy repertoire. Also heard here is Arbos’s orchestration of five pieces from Iberia, featuring Manuel Rosenthal leading the Paris Opera Orchestra. To complete the disc, French pianist Jean-Joël Barbier, a master of the Spanish and French repertoire, performs a selection of Albéniz’s solo piano works.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDOver the course of his long and successful career, the great pianist Sviatoslav Richter made his likes and dislikes well known. He favored live over studio recordings, and carefully chose the

works he performed, often avoiding staples of the repertoire and sometimes the entire output of a particular composer. Apparently, in spite of his legendary recording of the second concerto, Johannes Brahms was not a Richter favorite. This recording makes one wonder why - as the insightful readings of these solo works seem every bit as ‘legendary’ as his playing on the concerto.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDOn this Praga SACD, Manuel Rosenthal conducts the Orchestre du Théatre National de l’Opéra de Paris in Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and the symphonic suite Images,

with its surprisingly successful evocation of Spanish culture, despite Debussy’s limited knowledge of the country. Even the great Manuel de Falla was surprised by its authenticity. Also included is a performance of La Boîte a Joujoux, Debussy’s lavish ballet for a children’s puppet show, featuring the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Astoundingly, this work was written during the same period as his Three Poems of Mallarmé.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDThis disc presents violinist Gérard Poulet and the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra’s “rehabilitation” of Edouard Lalo’s Concerto Russe, which was written for violinist Pablo de

Sarasate in 1880. Sarasate was instead fond of Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, which is performed here by violinist Isaac Stern accompanied by Eugene Ormandy leading the Philadelphia Orchestra. The work is less of a symphony than an instrumental suite of lyrical scenes for violin and orchestra. This release also includes the overture to Le Roi d’Ys, a now forgotten opera that dwells on the power of both human passion and the sea, performed by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

IMPORTAs a conductor, Joseph Keilberth belonged to the “old school,” which distinguished itself from younger generations by focusing on climbing the career ladder in the same opera house. His friendship with Hans Pfitzner significantly

affected his vision of interpretation, which was devoid of all theatrical effects. The sound he produced under his baton was brilliant but never storming or thundering, and he didn’t let himself go to exaggerating details. From his work with several German radio orchestras, sprang these live recordings of Beethoven and Brahms from 1962.

IMPORTOne of the great conductors of the twentieth century, Felix Weingartner was a student of Franz Liszt. From 1908 to 1911 he was the principal conductor of the Vienna Hofoper, succeeding Gustav Mahler and he retained

the conductorship of the Vienna Philharmonic until 1927. Weingartner was the first to make commercial recordings of all nine Beethoven symphonies. His conducting style contrasted with the romantic approach of many of his contemporaries; Weingartner insisted on playing the music as written. These two Beethoven recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic come from his extensive discography that he recorded between 1910 and 1940. The recording features Symphony No.8 and Weingartner’s own orchestration of the Hammerklavier Sonata.

IMPORTIn February 2008, five musician friends met at Elmau Castle in the Bavarian Alps: Markus Stockhausen, Tara Bouman, Stefano Scodanibbio, Fabrizio Ottaviucci and Mark Nauseef. Their intent was to make a recording

of Intuitive Music: a music that is fleeting – since it is only intended for the moment – but nevertheless deserves documentation. For four days, they played together, without music or prior discussion. The rules of this intuitive ensemble-playing had to do with discovering, listening intensely, responding, contrasting, and constructing – but with everything in real time.

IMPORTThe piano works of Mark Andre are founded on his intensive examination of the fleeting phenomenon of sound reverberation and decay. His fading sounds can take numerous forms; there might be a thick cluster that reverberates

on a single string, or a single note that causes the entire landscape of strings to resonate. On this recording, Tomoko Hemmi and Yukiko Sugawara interpret Andre’s experimental constructions, focusing on his more recent pieces which seem softer and more playful, although here, too, the intrinsic logic and necessity of every transition and development has been closely scrutinized.

IMPORTFile in: CountryIn the late 1950s and the ‘60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967, collects a dozen of Patsy Cline’s biggest hits including “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Sweet Dreams (Of You),” “Crazy,” and “I Fall to Pieces.” Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline’s full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville’s “countrypolitan” sound. Before Shania Twain found a new (though not necessarily improved) way to combine country and pop in the 1990s, this was the top-selling country album of all time by a female artist. Analogue Productions’ SACD transfer is taken directly from the master tapes, providing the best possible sound.

IMPORTFile in: World / FranceSerge Gainsbourg both charmed us and repelled us, which made him a familiar enigma, a dazzling mystery. Simultaneously Jekyll and Hyde, shy and provocative, modest yet

exhibitionist, masculine and feminine, he represents the two extremes of desire and natural urges. Gainsbourg is almost unique in French music. Only he and Léo Ferré developed their own texts and their arrangements to such an extent. Gainsbourg wrote and composed not as an author or a musician would, but like a painter. He used words, notes and instruments as he would have done colors and paintbrushes.

IMPORTFile in: World / FranceBoris Vian did not have the time to enjoy his moment in the sun. No sooner was he dead and buried than his songs began their inexorable rise to immortality. “Le Déserteur” was sung by

all the pacifists on earth (Joan Baez and Peter Paul & Mary, among others). In France, he inspired various artists such as Jacques Higelin, and above all, Serge Gainsbourg, who always claimed Vian was his main source of inspiration. The small selection of songs presented here, whether they are sung by Vian himself or other performers, demonstrates his incredible modernity, as if their author (and perhaps therein lies the rub) was very much ahead of his time.

His 1949 album Intuition, under Tristano’s leadership, found the three men defining “free jazz” a full decade before the term was coined. It is not surprising then that free-thinking and improvising Konitz would gravitate to the post-modern sensibilities of Ethan Iverson, best known as the pianist in The Bad Plus and a composer of extremely wide range and versatili-ty. Together with Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy they offer a wildly creative set list where past and present combine to teeter on the edge of the future, where new compositions traverse unexplored soundscapes and standards are deconstructed only to be reassembled in a way which challenges all preconceived notions of how a tune “should go.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzKenny Burrell has appeared on so many essential jazz recordings that jazz history and his biography seem irretrievably intertwined. Billie Holiday’s valedictory rumination Lady Sings the Blues, Jimmy Smith’s epochal funk throwdown Back at the Chicken Shack, Tony Bennett’s Carnegie Hall debut -- Kenny Burrell played guitar for them all. Even Jimi Hendrix once remarked, “Kenny Burrell - that’s the sound I’m looking for.” Here is Burrell captured live at the West-Coast jazz Mecca, Catalina’s, in an easy-going program of some of his most-requested tunes along with a few of his personal favorites thrown in. Jazz tunes by Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, the Duke and others, standards and even Kenny’s classic original “Chitlins Con Carne” are here, all given the ever-tasteful Burrell treatment.

IMPORTFile in: FlamencoSeldom has an album lived up so well to its name. With each track, crafted with the utmost care and featuring a whole host of superb guest stars, Juan Carmona blends the flamenco music so dear to his heart with flavors of jazz and world music. At times very outward-looking, at times introspective, with Alchemya he brings his art to a new level and paints a bold self-portrait underpinned by rich variety, freedom, the pleasure of new discovery and exceptionally high standards. Carmona truly is an alchemist who has found the philosopher’s stone by focusing on the music alone.
