The Board Retreat was held on July 31 and August 1, 2014 at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A group of outgoing, incoming, current and ex officio members of the KSCPA Board of Directors gathered to evaluate the success of the 2014 KSCPA Strategic Plan and to create a plan for the 2015 fiscal year.

The retreat was facilitated by Tom Hood, CEO of the Maryland Association of CPAs and the Business Learning Institute. The Board looked at what the KSCPA has accomplished since the 2013 retreat and what still needs to be worked on. After evaluating the previous year’s plan, everyone focused on the future of the KSCPA by looking at each “Big Rock” and asking “Why” is this important to KSCPA members. Once we drilled down to the root of each “big rock,” we were able to create meaningful action plans to achieve future success. You can read more about the process in the Board Update on page 5.

As we start a new fiscal year at the KSCPA, it is important for our members to see the value in renewing membership. Please reach out to the KSCPA to let us know what we are doing well and what areas we can improve upon. I also invite you to get involved in the KSCPA by serving on a task force or conference steering committee. This is a fantastic way to share your ideas, meet other KSCPA members and to ensure the future of the KSCPA and the profession.

Kind Regards,

Melinda Hitz

2014 Board Retreat a Success

This is a transition time of year when outgoing, incoming, current, and ex officio members of the KSCPA Board of Directors gather at the annual strategic planning retreat. Our Board Chair, Melinda Hitz, chose the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, CO with the CEO of the Maryland Association of CPAs and Business Learning Institute, Tom Hood, serving as facilitator. The location was not only attractive as a location for the retreat, but also a great place for families. Despite the rain, while planning was underway, family members were able to enjoy the many activities at the Resort and in Colorado Springs.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW PHOTOS FROM THE 2014 BOARD RETREAT

our Board Meets the Needs of All generations – We are Sustainable

The board composition spans three generations – Millennial, Gen X, and Boomer, with Gen X the majority. Unlike many state association boards, the KSCPA is moving forward with Gen X leaders and seeking ways to expand the engagement of Millennial and Gen X to ensure sustainability of the association. Despite the desire to change and to continue to add value, some things never change; namely, the ability of like-minded CPAs to come together, bond, and to work together collaboratively to achieve our mission:

MiSSioN of the kSCPAThe KSCPA is dedicated to supporting and developing its members and promoting the accounting profession.

it’s About the Process: the i2a: insights to Action Strategic Thinking System

For the past several years, Tom has facilitated our retreat using the i2a: Insights to Action Strategic Thinking System with the goal of making sense of the complex and changing world. This process is outlined in Tom’s report along with the results of the retreat.

CliCk heRe To ReVieW RePoRT By ToM hooD oF The STRATegiC PlANNiNg ReTReAT

In summary, the i2a process involves the following steps:

1 SIGHT: Look at the world around us to identify trends that impact our profession.

2 INSIGHT: Look at what we’ve accomplished, what we learned along the way, and what got in the way.

3 CREATE: We develop our own “big rocks” and action plans. This year, Melinda worked with Tom prior to the retreat, and it was decided that our “big rocks” from 2013-14 would not change and that we would focus on engaging our board members with action items that would be followed throughout the year instead of only at the biannual leadership summits. We accomplished our goal at the retreat, have solid action plans, engaged champions, and a plan to connect via conference call every quarter and in person as needed.

Page 6: August 2014 Skyscapes

6 AUGUST 2014

4 CoMMUNiCATe: We continuously communicate our plan to the KSCPA team and to the leaders on the board and other members who serve on the “big rock” task forces.

5 INSPIRE: For us to be successful, we must inspire others to action. An engaged leadership of the KSCPA is the ONLY way to ensure sustainability of our profession as the “most trusted advisors” in the state of Kansas. As the KSCPA team works to implement the plan and strategies and, in fact, in whatever actions we take, we always do a check against the plan to make sure we are following the strategic thinking of our leadership.

Successful organizations Focus on the “Why?”

A central focus of the first day of the retreat was to ponder WHY we do what we do. Most organizations focus on what and how they do something, but the most successful organizations zero in on the WHY because that is the inspiration and the reason for wanting to belong.

We, therefore, approached our strategic planning session on why we have the “big rocks.” We built a “Strat House” for each of the “big rocks,” starting with the roof, which is the WHY. During the second day of the retreat, we built the walls of the houses (actions), identified the deliverables, and stated our Guiding Principles.

Our champions led round table discussions to build each “Strat House” followed by a “Strategy Café” process in which we rotated the groups so that everyone was involved in each “Strat House.” The Champions facilitated feedback and edits to the “Strat Houses.”

The actual “Strat Houses” will be sent to each champion and task force members and reviewed at the first follow-up conference call along with a list of task force members.

Finally, we identified “Next Steps,” which is our commitment to the action plans created by the “Strat House” process.

Over the next year, our “big rock” champions and task force members will “meet” by conference call and in person, as needed, to ensure the strategies developed at this important retreat are implemented. All members are invited to serve on a task force. If you are interested in serving on a task force, please contact Danielle, [email protected].

Thank you, again, to everyone who participated in this event, and we look forward to a very productive fiscal year beginning September 1, 2014.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Windows 8: What Are The Advantages?By Thomas G. Stephens, Jr., CPA, CITP, CGMA

Introduction

With over 200 million licenses sold, Windows 8 has achieved critical mass in the market. Yet many professionals and organizations remain leery of Microsoft’s newest operating system. Unfortunately, if you choose not to upgrade to Windows 8, you may be missing a number of great features designed to allow you to work more efficiently and securely. In this article, you will learn about some of these features and why Windows 8 may be right for you.

Differentiating between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Before discussing new features, let us first differentiate between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Microsoft released Windows 8 on October 26, 2012 and followed up with Windows 8.1 on October 27, 2013. Essentially, Windows 8.1 was the first major update to Windows 8 and added several features that make the Windows 8 environment more attractive to business users. All users of Windows 8 are eligible for the free Windows 8.1 update. Additionally, Microsoft has added even more business-oriented features to Windows 8.1 with the free update of Windows 8.1 Update 1 released in April. Figure 1 summarizes the timeline for Windows 8 releases to date.

For purposes of simplicity, we will use the term “Windows 8” to refer to the entire Windows 8 environment, including Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update 1.

A Dual-Personality Operating System

The computing world has forever changed. Increasingly, business professionals are choosing to supplement – and in some cases, replace – their traditional desktop/laptop computers with touchscreen tablets. With Windows 8, you do not have to learn how to use multiple operating systems in order to work with multiple devices because Windows 8 runs on tablets and on traditional desktops and laptops. When you choose to run Windows 8 on a tablet, such as Microsoft’s Surface Pro, you will probably take advantage of the new “Modern” user interface, a sample of which Figure

2 illustrates. From the Start screen of this touch-optimized user interface, you can launch virtually any application on your computer by tapping or clicking on one of the tiles. However, if you want – or simply prefer – to work from the familiar “Desktop” user interface, you can quickly switch to that environment by tapping or

clicking the Desktop tile or the Windows button in the lower, left corner of the Start screen. When you do so, the

Figure 1 - Windows 8 Release Timeline

Figure 2 - Windows 8 Modern User Interface

Page 12: August 2014 Skyscapes

12 AUGUST 2014

familiar Windows desktop pictured in Figure 3 appears.

The significance of being able to switch between two different “flavors” of Windows 8 cannot be overstated. Because of this feature, you can use Windows 8 as the operating system for a tablet as well as a more traditional desktop/laptop environment. Thus, you do not need to learn how to work with other operating systems when you want to work on your tablet. Further, if you choose to use a smartphone running Windows Phone 8, you will find that it very closely mirrors the functionality found in Windows 8, meaning you only need to learn how to work with one operating system across your desktop/laptop, tablet, and smartphone.

Windows 8 Runs Your Familiar Applications

If you choose to run Windows 8 on your desktop/laptop or tablet, you will find that it runs all of the applications that you otherwise would choose to run on a previous version of Windows (assuming, of course, that your device has adequate resources, such as RAM.) For example, if you have a Surface Pro tablet with Windows 8 installed, you can run Microsoft Office, your accounting software, or your tax application directly from the device. With other operating systems, you typically cannot do this. Of course, this frees you to work from virtually anywhere with your tablet, increasing your productivity.

Five Business-Oriented Features in Windows 8

In addition to the two “big picture” items mentioned above, Windows 8 contains a number of features targeted to business users, including those who choose not to work from a tablet. Because of space constraints, we will discuss only five of the more significant features available to you in Windows 8.

Boot to the Desktop

Many Windows 8 users on desktops and laptops without touch screens will more than likely want to work predominately in the familiar desktop environment. Added to Windows 8.1, you have the ability to have your Windows 8 computer boot directly to the desktop, instead of the Modern user interface.

Faster Boot Times

You will find that a Windows 8 computer boots and is ready for use much faster than the same computer equipped with a previous version of Windows. In some cases, you will see a Windows 8 computer boot in less than half the time required of a Windows 7 computer. While this is great news, the speed improvements do not end there. In fact, in virtually all tasks, Windows 8 outperforms prior versions of Windows, sometimes by significant margins.

Smart Search

The Smart Search feature added in Windows 8.1 allows you to search your computer, the Internet, and any data you store in OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive). For example, you can enter your search term by typing it anywhere on the Start screen. When you press Enter, Windows begins searching all locations for documents, web sites, and applications that match your search criteria. With this feature, you can save time by not needing to use different methods to search for data on your computer versus data on the Internet.

Windows To Go

If you run the Enterprise edition of Windows 8, you will have the ability to create a Windows 8-equipped computer that you can carry with you on a flash drive. Known as Windows To Go, this feature allows you to install Windows 8 on a flash drive, along with any desired applications and data. You can then take the flash drive on the road, insert it into a USB port on a computer that is certified for use with

Windows 7 or later, and your Windows 8 To Go portable computer will spring to life. When you finish working, simply unplug the flash drive. With Windows To Go, your computer can literally fit into the palm of your hand!

Improved Security

Security issues affect businesses of all sizes and Windows 8 helps to provide a more secure computing environment through a combination of features. A new boot up solution known as Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) replaces the Basic Input Output System of years gone by. Among other benefits, UEFI prevents unauthorized operating systems from loading during the boot sequence. Another example of improved security is found at the end-user level, where Windows 8 offers you the ability to use Picture Passwords instead of traditional passwords to login to your device. Picture Passwords allows you to use a series of gestures to login and represent an attractive option toward improving device and data security.

Summary

Windows 8 has critical mass in the market, now exceeding the market share of Apple’s OS X operating system. Yet until now, many have wondered if upgrading to Windows 8 makes sense, particularly in a business environment. The “big picture” aspects of learning only one operating system and being able to run all of your applications on all of your desktops, laptops, and tablets certainly begin to make a compelling case for Windows 8 at work. Add in numerous features that will enhance productivity and improve security and you have an operating system in Windows 8 that provides significant advantages over prior versions of Windows.

Kristen M. Doering - Executive & Artistic Director: I have always felt a deep connection and love for the people across Kansas who have supported me through the years, not only in my musical endeavors, but in mypersonal development as well. When Maria Im agreed to travel to Kansas last August to perform, I was incredibly excited to introduce her to my world outside of New York City. As Maria and I worked in Kansas that week, a hazy vision of this project began to take shape. When I made the solid decision to move forward, it was exciting to ask my close friend and colleague, Maria, to be a part of this vision.

Many people have asked if this project is school initiated, or if I will receive school credit at the end, and the answer is no. It is my deep sense of community, intertwined with my love of music that com-pels me to move forward with this project. The support I have received from the collective Kansas community throughout my life is one for which I am extremely grateful, and is at the heart of my efforts. We have already witnessed, in just a few short months, how this project is bringing the people in each community together. The community’s interest in what this project will mean for our youth is creating connections in my hometown and across Kansas all the way to New York City.

Maria O. Im -Executive Assistant Director: One of the major components of this project is our work within the schools. It is our vision that this project not only exposes students to the world of the performing arts, but inspires these young individu-als to look outside the box, to see a world full of potential, and to feel the exciting spark of a dream that may lead them to a life as a performing artist.

The six other artists that will be joining us in Kansas are completely invested in the community aspect. It is a rare opportunity for us as artists to connect with our audience up close and personal before we perform. It is truly a unique experience for both the artists and community members.

The project will have its first season this September, but it is our hope to build the foundation for an annual concert series that will tour through Kansas, with the potential to extend to other states across the country. With each year we hope to add more cities and schools to our roster. In doing so, we will be taking an active role in creating a place for the arts in the next generation.

During our weeklong tour through Kansas we will be doing school workshops, concerts, and different events within the larger communities. Please click here for more information and tickets!

The American Institute of CPAs honored Dr. Dan Deines, Ph.D., CPA, Ralph Crouch / KPMG Professor of Accounting at Kansas State University, as a winner of the Special Recognition Award. The AICPA’s Special Recognition Award is given to an individual who has contributed to the success of a particular professional initiative - contributions of an outstanding nature. The award was bestowed upon Deines by AICPA Chairman Bill Balhoff, CPA, CGMA, at the AICPA’s E.D.G.E. Conference in New Orleans on August 8, 2014. “Throughout his career, Dan Deines has worked tirelessly towards his vision of a professional accounting course for high school students and has helped rally the profession around this concept,” said Balhoff. “With an impressive resume of developing programs aimed to recruit high-performing students to the accounting profession, Dan’s dedication to improving the quality of accounting education makes him a fitting recipient of the Special Recognition Award.” Dr. Deines’ passion for developing programs to recruit high-quality students to the accounting profession began in 1989. His dedication to teaching and the profession has been continuously demonstrated throughout his career, and he has served on several AICPA and Kansas Society of CPAs (KSCPA) task forces and committees related to education.

He has served as the former chair of the AICPA’s Accounting Careers Subcommittee and has previously volunteered as a member of AICPA’s Accounting Education Executive Committee, Leadership Development Task Force, Financial Literacy Commission , Member Advisory Panel, Pre-education Certification Committee and as a participant in the Pathways Supply Chain initiative. Deines was previously honored with the AICPA Educator’s Award. Dr. Deines is the only educator to serve as the chair of the KSCPA, and he continues to attend and to participate in all leadership activities of the society. He also served as the chair of the KSCPA Educational Foundation. He joined the society in 1984. Deines is the 23nd recipient of the Special Recognition Award which was established in 1999. Past recipients of the Special Recognition Award are listed on the AICPA’s web site.

Deines and colleagues, John Morris and Joseph Ugrin were recently announced as recipients of the 2014 NASBA Accounting Education Research Grants. “State Policies and Attitudes Toward Acceptance of Advanced Placement (AP) Courses and a Comparison of Success on the Placement Credit and Those That Do Not: A Two-Part Investigation” Dan Deines, John Morris and Joseph Ugrin, Kansas State University. Deines and Ugrin are both members of the KSCPA.

Congratulation to Dr. Deines for all of his recent professional recognition.
