STERIS Corporation receives clearance for VERIFY V24 biological indicator monitoring Sterrad Sterilization Systems STERIS Corporation, a pioneer in low temperature sterilization, has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the VERIFY V24 Self-Contained Biological Indicator for routine biological monitoring of the standard cycles of the STERRAD 100S and STERRAD 200 Sterilization Systems; the Standard and Advanced Cycles of the STERRAD NX Sterilization System and the Express, Standard and Flex Scope Cycles of the 100NX Sterilization System. In these applications, healthcare facilities can confidently utilize the VERIFY V24 Self Contained Biological Indicator as a permanent alternative to the STERRAD Cyclesure Biological Indicators; however, the VERIFY V24 SCBI is not intended to be used in test packs for any STERRAD cycles. The VERIFY V24 Self-Contained Biological Indicator provides healthcare professionals with benefits such as: one biological indicator for use in multiple gaseous hydrogen peroxide systems and compliance with ANSI/AAMI/ISO 11138 and ANSI/AAMI ST58 standards. When used in accordance with its full instructions for use, the VERIFY V24 Self-Contained Biological Indicator provides highly resistant microbial challenge for both the V-PRO Low Temperature and STERRAD Sterilization Systems. HEALTHCARE PURCHASING NEWS Center cancels surgeries over fear of contaminated instruments LAKELAND, FL - Officials at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and an adjoining medical center shut down surgeries Friday after they suspected a surgical instrument may have been exposed to a fatal brain disease. Yadira Holmes, a spokeswoman with Lakeland Regional Medical Center, wrote in an email that the hospital stopped surgeries after it was notified about the situation. "Steps were immediately taken to safely utilize instruments not involved in this situation to deal with any urgent procedures," Holmes wrote. Holmes said the hospital received surgical equipment from an out-of-county facility at which there was a possible case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It is a rare, degenerative, fatal disease, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The disease is similar to mad cow disease. "At no time did any instrument used on that patient ever leave that facility," Holmes said. Hospital officials speculated the surgical instruments used at the other facility were washed at the same time as the instruments routinely transferred to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. "This particular set of instruments was cleaned multiple times in a sterilization procedure that over the last 40 years has effectively stopped transmission of CJD," Holmes said. The situation also impacted a surgical center next to LRMC. David Daniel, CEO of Lakeland Surgical & Diagnostic Center on North Florida Avenue, canceled surgeries scheduled for Friday afternoon. He said it was highly unlikely there was exposure to the disease but he wanted to take all precautionary measures. The surgical instruments in question were on a tray at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, but were never actually taken to the Surgical Center, Daniel said. However, Daniel said an instrument used at Lakeland Surgical & Diagnostic Center for a foot surgery may have come in contact with other instruments on the tray. Officials at the surgical center canceled 10 surgeries and planned to soak all instruments in bleach over the weekend. Daniel said the plan is to resume surgeries on Monday.
