Wishing all the groups on summer camp and going abroad an amazing adventure and special mention to the explorers in Greenland this summer and the 6 young people representing our district at the 23rd World Scout jamboree in Japan.

First Aid

Please don’t forget I have booked the next First Aid course. It is a one day Emergency Aid courses Saturday 19th September. Please email me if you are interested in attending and I will send out the booking form. It will be on a first come first served basis. There are only 12 places on each course. Quite a few people have asked for booking forms but I haven’t had them back yet.

Safeguard Awareness

If you have never done this module or your appointment is up for renewal in the next few months, and you haven’t already redone the training, you will need to book on the next course. It is on 30th September from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at District HQ. Please let me know if you need a booking form. No one has redone this module for 6 months so there must be quite a few of you out there who need to do it.

Over the summer, someone will be contacting all those who have not yet completed their Wood Beads and have done no training this year, to encourage them to book the next course.

Finally I hope you are having a relaxing summer break and come back refreshed in September.

The Little Red Tent has been on tour this month, experiencing some extreme weather on the way. Thunder , lightning and torrential rain and wind certainly put its waterproofness to the test at 37th Cub camp at Waddecar. The following weekend wasn’t much better at Great Tower with Bubble Factor, but at least we didn’t have the thunder this time, and a little drizzle for the Ghyll Scrambling wasn’t an issue. Thankfully Chris booked the weather for the District Family camp, and my little red tent finally dried out. It was great to see so many Beavers (and leaders) at this event. I know my family and I had a great time, and it certainly looked like everyone else was too.

Chief Scout BronzeThere have been 16 Chief Scout Bronze Presentations in July from 4th, 30th, 37th and 40th. A massive congratulations to them all for their hard work.

Our next presentation evening of certificates will be in October. Please let me know when your Beavers are ready for their Badges to be

presented so a District leader can be arranged to visit your colony. If anybody needs any help or advise linking their programmes to fit the criteria for the challenge badges, please ask for help.

District Blackpool Tower trip – 27th June Just under 90 Beavers and leaders attended this years District Blackpool trip from 37th, 40th, 60th, 45th, 46th, 58th and 61st. First we watched the 4D film and went to the top of the Tower. Some of the Beavers were brave enough to walk on the glass floor, sadly I’m not that brave. Some of the colonies ate their lunch on the balcony in the Tower Ballroom. The Beavers (both boys and girls) were amazed and mesmerised by the dancing. Charlie from 37th told me that it was the best lunch he had ever had in his life, and some of the Beavers did a bit of their own dancing on the balcony. Jungle Jims play area as always was a hit with the Children and burned off some excess energy in readiness for a sit down at the circus. My favourite clowns Mookie and Mr Boo did not disappoint, with a slight change in their routine for this year. 8 years I’ve been going now, and its still funny. There were a few hair-raising moments however, especially when the trapeze artist slipped and just managed to stop falling off, and when the unicyclist fell off. I think I looked away more than I watched.

World Wide Waddacar – 4th July

Well, after the previous nights lightening storm, the weather was mostly kind, although a little blustery. Cubs and Beavers from 4th, 37th, 40th and 51st enjoyed a day filled with internationally themed activities. Out own district had Norway, and hence had the soundtrack of Frozen playing ALL day long. (sorry to those who weren’t quite so enthusiastic) and the snow machine again made an appearance. The comments from those there were positive from all the Disticts bases, with plenty to do and very little queuing. And if you ever wanted to know what 10 kilos of marshmallows looks like, then you should have been there. Thanks to paul for helping to organise the bases, and to Chris, Jim, the parents from 4th, and Scouts from 37th John, Connor and Niamh, for helping out on the bases.

District Gathering – 25-27th September – Rock and River - MawdesleyBy now all colonies should have information on this event. Beavers have the opportunity to sleepover either with the Beaver group, with their own groups, or just come for the day on Saturday.

County Fun Day – 19th September – Waddacar 10am – 4pmBookings have now closed for this county event. If you are not taking your colony and fancy helping on a base, let me know.

Ormskirk District Family Camp 2015

The family camp was on Friday 17th of July to Sunday 19th of July. There were around one hundred people there throughout the weekend. There were three sub camps to group the family's into zones. This is because the theme was based on the crystal maze. The three sub camp names were the futuristic zone, the medieval zone and the industrial zone. On one of the nights we did a wide game based on the world scout jamboree, on the second night we had a campfire in the forest next to the field we camped on and we went on a guided bat walk. Some of the activities we did on the Saturday included Archery, the zip-wire, Branding, various crafts and Geocaching. During these activities we earned crystals of various size which we could trade in for time in the crystal dome.Everyone enjoyed the crystal dome with all of the shinnies blasting out of a blower machine which we had to catch in a net. On the nights we had sub camp fires where the children enjoyed roasting the marshmallows. On Sunday we had water based activities the popular activities were being on a space hopper and bouncing along a tarpaulin which was slippery in a race style, and the rocket launcher bottle. Over all the weekend was great and I heard lots of positive things about the camp. Thankyou to Chris, Paul, Liz and everyone else who has made this weekend possible.

Alcatraz returns!

After one year’s hiatus we were back with teams from across County and beyond (two running teams and two catching teams from Sussex). This year it took place in the South Lakes, starting at a pub West of Newby Bridge (handy for the catchers to have lunch before setting off), with a checkpoint in Grizedale Forest and finishing at Great Tower.

For those who don’t know the event it’s a bit like Moonlight but longer. Setting off at midday on Saturday they have to arrive at a checkpoint between 5pm and 7pm and then continue to finish at midday on Sunday. There are catching teams and each running team has 10 lives.

There was good weather to start but it did get a bit “damp” later so a few teams dropped out and were sheltered in tents at Great Tower overnight. It finished dry too which helped find the last few who couldn’t find the finish within the finishing window.

The winning running team was one of the teams that travelled about 8 hours each way from Sussex to take part so well done Team Tea. Nomads ESU from Ormskirk District and third were Space Monkeys.

The catching trophy stayed within the district with Team Equinox, followed by team MM (crew members) and then one of the Sussex teams came third – Team Cheese.

Well done to all who took part – see you again next year.

We also had crew members at District Family Camp the following weekend. All the families seemed to be really enjoying themselves and learning about what scouting is all about. I think the Crystal Dome (/gazebo with sides) needs to be at all events – as long as we have enough Beavers to pick up the sparkly paper.

Additionally, there are some Group Partnership Awards - Environment, Faith and International available and these will also be sold at half price. Once these badges have gone, there will be no further supplies, so if you have any members who will be completing these badges, please get them soon. Remember, during the transition phase, anyone who started their Challenges prior to Jan 2015, can complete the Chief Scout Award using the old Programme until September and a mix of old and new after September. Only new members, starting after Jan 2015, have to fully use the new Programme.
