AUGUST 2015 CHMCC • PO BOX 1466 • COFFS HARBOUR • NSW 2450 Committee Volunteers This year’s AGM will be held on September 5th and all committee positions will be up for election. Please consider getting involved and helping to manage our great company. Nomination forms for committee positions are available on our website. Please think about nominating yourself or someone else. Nominations close 22/8/15. Submissions for 2016/17 If you would like to direct a show for CHMCC, whether one from our wish list, or something completely different, please send us an email to [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you. UPSTAGED coffs harbour musical comedy company WELCOME! A big thanks to all of you who came along and supported the Swing Dance! We had such a good time with great music from the Big Big Boogie Band. We even got to hear a number from the birthday girl herself, Jenny Beatson! What a rare treat! We also got to see another of Cate Walsh’s creations, with a surprise batty birthday cake for the Batwoman. Thank you also to those who took a moment to say thanks and tell us how much they’d enjoyed the night. That is after all why we do these things! Take a look at some of Shalla’s photos on page 4. If you have an idea for a Gala Arts Event or theme, do let us know. Would you rather have a formal catered ball or a more informal dance? Indoor or outdoor? We’d love to hear your ideas, and for more help with organising the annual event. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is well into the rehearsal process with the wonderful team of Maureen & Tim, and our first few dance rehearsals with Kate Sevenoaks. Lewis Hackfath is making himself extremely useful as Assistant Director, and we have a wonderful cast, including two very talented kids as Jeremy and Jemima, so there will be a lot to look forward to in this one! So what else has been happening? We’re already planning for next year and beyond, and although we don’t have our 2016 season finalised yet, we hope to be able to share some news before too long. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for an announcement! It’s been a little quiet on the submissions front - we’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to direct a show. We’d love to hear from you if you have an idea for a show you’d like someone else to direct, or if you’d like to direct a show yourself. You won’t be alone, you will have the support of the Company as the Producer, and an Assistant Director & Production Manager to help with the whole process. Give it some thought - we’d love to hear from you. Once again it’s time to plan our Annual General Meeting. This year we’ll be meeting in the Lifeguard’s building next to the Park Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. Why not come along and join us for lunch at the Club before the meeting? We’ll be having lunch at 12.30, with the meeting to follow at 2pm. Please consider nominating for committee, or nominating someone else who is willing to help out. The committee meets monthly and manages the Company on your behalf. There are many requests for our help with or contribution to community events all year, as well as planning for and managing our own two shows a year and the Gala Arts event. So please, give some thought to helping out, even if it’s only for one year. Nominations close on August 22nd. I look forward to seeing many of you at the AGM (and for lunch beforehand). CHMCC President Maureen Burgess

From the President A hearty hellooo Members old and new!

Funny how getting in front of a computer renders one virtually mute, when in person one never stop blabbing!

Rehearsals for CCBB are now well under way, and going swimmingly and reasonably to schedule(!). More on that in my Director's Report.

A couple of weeks ago I attended a Jetty Memorial Theatre Management Committee (yep, there's a mouthful!) as one of two Community Theatre representatives, and many things were discussed including the continued and increased use of the theatre for film screenings, drama classes and other miscellany. As the theatre is run by Council, all avenues need to be addressed to make the venue "viable". It is an unavoidable path if we wish to continue using the theatre for our productions.

We also discussed the Theatre Open Day (run by ACCTS; Association of Coffs Community Theatre Societies as a fund raising exercise), and following it's success, plan to hold another one in early 2016. Shirley Barnett will be organizing a planning committee, and would very much welcome anyone with a bit of spare time!

One of the suggestions for spending some of our Trust money, was to replace several of the current stage lights with LED's, which will make them a lot easier to set, have myriads of programmable colours, and will use a tiny percentage of the power the present ones use. And they don't generate heat- good news for all those profuse stage sweaters! More news on that when it comes to hand.

As you can see from the wonderful photos, we all had a great time at the Gala Swing Dance. There was much exuberance displayed, most notably from Geoffrey Scotford who I give the crown to for Most Inventive and Energetic Free Form Dance (aka Interpretive Dance, previously and unofficially won by My Good Self), with special mention to Pete and Jodie Hodges for their floorwork, Rebecca Sutherland for her very classy entourage, and Kristy and Rob Pursch who showed us how it's supposed to be done!

We also celebrated our own Jenny Beatson's birthday with an amazing cake provided by Cate Walsh (Too Sweet, look her up on FB, her cookies and cakes are unbelievable!), and to top things off, were treated to an impromptu performance of "Fever" by Jen and the Band. What a night!

Many thanks to the entire committee for hosting the event, to everyone who stayed back to help pack up, to the Coffs Big Big Boogie Band who were fawesome, and to everyone who swung by! Hope to do it all again next year, and hope to get more of you if we do! In other news... we will be holding our AGM early next month. What does this mean? The entire committee stands down, and a new one is elected. Considering that the committee members decide on everything- from making the Company prosper and grow to our future shows and everything in between, it is important for you as Members, to have a say, or even consider nominating for committee. We generally only meet once a month for a couple of hours. Please give it some thought! And at the very least, join us for lunch and the AGM. The entire meeting rarely goes for more than 20 minutes. Mauz

Well there's good news and bad news from the CCBB Camp. Bad news first- we have lost two fine men, Paul McLeod (ensemble) and John Miller (Grandpa) who was torn between accepting an offered role in CHATS October production of "Birthrights", and continuing in CCBB. After much deliberation, John has decided to go with "Birthrights", and although very sad to see him go, we wish him every success. The good news is that another John has taken on the Grandpa role. John Greene has just moved to Coffs from Adelaide, where he spent many years working in musical theatre. John is a Celebrant (hatch, match, dispatch) with a fine baritone voice. And seems a jolly good sport. He turned up to his first rehearsal and was immediately thrown into Chory with Kate (a daunting experience for non dancers!) which he not only survived, but came back for more! I am extremely pleased to welcome him into the Company and the show. As I mentioned in the Presidential Report, rehearsals to date are going pretty well according to schedule, and although we have the inevitable absences, it is shaping up very nicely! I am truly thrilled with the whole cast, they are embracing Chitty with their whole hearts, voices and bodies, and I can't thank them enough for all the wonderful work they are doing. I believe we will put on a true Spectacular! I would like to make special mention of the children, who are all an absolute pleasure to work with. Grace Jones and Harley Hayes (Jemima and Jeremy) are working their little butts off, even on the school nights when they probably just want to snuggle in bed. Plus they're totally Adorable and have voices of angels!

As always, there is a small army of people behind the scenes. The Shed Boys are working on various large props and sets, Joel Blythe and Russell Lane are onto, respectively, The Car, the haircutting machine and Truly's motorcycle, Sara Smith and Colin Wilkes are working through costumes. Sharon Tomlinson has started on the myriad of other props, Di, Shalla (as well as being cast co ordinator and general Extremely Useful Person) and Jenny Beatson are working on T-shirts, publicity and programmes, Tim Egan is assembling The Band, and poor Lewis is doing everything from notating musical parts to getting my computer going, to sourcing me a new phone and providing the rehearsal keyboard as I still haven't got around to getting the boot of my car fixed! Aaaaargh! So, all going swimmingly! I couldn't dream up a better bunch of people, and I thank you with all of my heart! One Proud Director! Mauz

Childcatcher Geoffrey Scotford isn’t scaring the children yet!
