Beauval-Sipisishk Metis Local #37 Update

As I prepare to head to only my second Metis Nation Legislative Assembly in Yorkton

this weekend, I figure I should update our local on a few things.

Local Membership/AGM

We have been encouraging members to

register locally as to rebuild our membership

database for when we are to hold Annual

General Meetings (AGMs). Our next AGM is

scheduled for September 2016. The exact date,

time and location will be published at least 30

days prior to the AGM. This year will be an

election year for the positions of President,

Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 2

Directors. If you want to be able to vote,

please ensure you have filled out the Metis

Local #37 Registration Form. Copies are

available at the Village Office.

Metis Cards

While our local currently does not provide

Metis Cards, you are still encouraged to begin

the process of applying for the Provincial

Metis Card. I will know more about the status

of the Genealogy Department of the MN-S

after this weekend. You will need to have your

family tree and birth certificate for this

process.

Participation Agreement

Our local had begun the process of negotiating

a participation agreement with Cameco/Areva

industry partners in partnership with the

Northern Village of Beauval. As our

membership largely consists of Metis

individuals from this community, we felt it

only fitting that we partner in the negotiation

process. We have retained the law services of

Devlin Gailus Westaway (DGW) Law out of

Ontario to start this negotiation process for

us. This is the same law group that

negotiated Southend’s Participation

Agreement. We hope to make some

headway in this prior to the election, but if

not we will gladly pass the torch to the next

executive that is elected in September.

We require information from the community

for this process, and we have been provided

a survey by the law group to take to target

groups such as Elders, Youth and Traditional

Land Users. We will have individuals out

there doing surveys shortly, please assist

these individuals in providing them with as

much information as possible. This will help

our legal case.

General Information

Our local has been active in attending the

Beauval Co-Management meetings in

regards to land uses for leases and permits

for things such as forestry activity. As

always, I am available to field any questions

or concerns at my office which is currently

located at the old Village Office building but

will soon be moving upstairs to the Sister

Simard Center. I am also available at (306)

288-7123 should you need to register and

have a letter written for proof of Metis

citizenship for things such as school,

scholarships, etc.

Thanks,

Nick Daigneault

President, Metis Local #37
