What’s In a Ribbon Placing?

When we get ready to exhibit our projects at the Fair sometimes it’s good to take a ‘time out’ and remember what the true meanings are of the different colors of ribbons. Over the years, I think we have been ‘trained’ to think that red, and even blue ribbons are bad but this simply isn’t the case. The criteria listed on the scoresheets is used to help determine the ribbon placing: Purple: All areas should be outstanding. There should not be obvious flaws in workmanship. Blue: All areas should be rated in the very good or outstanding categories. The exhibit is generally acceptable, but with one or two areas that are not the very best they could be. Red: Ratings would generally fall in the average or needs improvement categories, with possible one very good. The exhibit has several areas that are less than perfect. White: The exhibit has many problems. It is not neatly done or durable. The design principles are not evident.

Don’t Forget to Pick-up Exhibits Fair exhibits can be picked up on Sunday night, August 14 after 6:00 p.m. or on Monday morning, August 15 from 8 to 10:00 am.

The Champions Take the Chair!

the dollars that would have been used to pay for the carcass contests. The bag chairs are embroidered on the back.

Health Requirements for Animals Exhibited at the Fair

Cat: Each cat that is exhibited at the fair, will be required to show proof of vaccination for rabies, panleucopenia, viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus. Cats must

either have a current feline leukemia vaccination or proof of a negative test within 180 days of the show. Proof of vaccinations must be presented at check-in before the show. Shots should be given 2 weeks before the show for the best protection. Cats shall be free of fleas, ticks, ear mites, ring worm, any internal and external parasite and infectious diseases. If the animal is not declawed, the claws must be clipped.

No expectant or nursing mother cats may enter. Dog: Each dog that is exhibited at the fair must be immunized for Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo,

and Rabies. Proof of vaccination for each dog must be provided at check-in.

Beef & Dairy: The vet will inspect all livestock before unloading. Only animals not showing signs of infectious or contagious diseases will be allowed to show. Animals that have active ringworm, lesions, visible warts,

dermatitis, or abscesses will not be allowed entry. No test required for Tuberculosis or Brucellosis. Sheep & Goats: The vet will inspect all livestock before unloading. All sheep and meat goats (except breeding sheep shown in the wool) must be shorn before vet inspection. All female sheep and goats being exhibited must have USDA official ID (scrapie tags). Under no circumstances may sheep and goats be exhibited which originate from scrapie-source flocks or scrapie-infected flocks.

Swine: Under no circumstances may swine under quarantine be exhibited. Classes are non-terminal. Swine should be free of PRV and Brucellosis. After exhibition, it is

strongly recommended that exhibited swine should be kept separate and apart from all other swine and tested negative in no less than 30 days following last exhibition or shipped directly to slaughter.

7

Bucket Calf Project

Bucket Calf projects will again be judged on 3 factors: 1/3 project record book; 1/3 interview; and 1/3 show ability of animal (handling, cleanliness, health). Bucket calf record books must be turned into the 4-H Fair

Office by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11 so that the record book judging can take place prior to the show. The Bucket Calf Show will start at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12th. (No record book for Clover Kids bucket calf.) Bucket Calves will not be allowed to participate in the Small Beef Showmanship that starts at 1:00 p.m. This is for feeder calves only. Bucket Calf showmanship will be part of the Bucket Calf Show. Recognition will be given to the top record book score, top interview score, and top show score in the Bucket Calf Show.

REVISED Bucket Calf Record Books This year the bucket calf record books were revised into a Beginning Level (ages 8-12 on Jan 1) and Advanced Level (ages 13 & over on Jan 1). Contact the office for the new record book or they are available at http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/knox/4-h-project-resources/

Second Year Bucket Calf Project For those in the Second Year Bucket Calf project, the animals need to be entered on Thursday, August 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and stay the entire fair. Showmanship and judging will take place on Sunday, August 14th during the Large Beef Show. Record books need to be handed in on entry day, Thursday, August 11 by 6:00 p.m. The record book from the previous year needs to be handed in also.

Attention Swine Exhibitors

Youth PQA Plus certification will be required for swine exhibitors who plan to market their hogs at the fair through John Morrell. For those who need certification to market

their hogs, please contact the office right away to make arrangements. The Swine Show is non-terminal this year. John Morrell will be buying pigs at the fair on the live weight. The bid will be available at check-in; therefore, you must decide at check-in which pigs will be marketed and which pigs will be going home. Exhibitors selling their pigs will need to sign a Country of Origin form and a HACCP Food Guaranty form. Breeding Swine Class - Each exhibit is eligible to enter one gilt in the Breeding Swine Class. You must decide at check-in which gilt you are entering and the breeding gilt is not eligible for the Rate-of-Gain Contest. It is extremely important that hogs are not fed in the wash racks as it clogs up the drainage system. Please feed them in their pens! Please do not use any oil based products on your hogs, because this interferes with the tattoos. Also be aware that ID’s will be checked against their ID sheets when they are checked in at the fair.

County Fair Livestock judges are: Horse – Abby Knobbe Cat – Lynell Fiscus Dog - Darci Lindgren Livestock Shows – Vaughn Sievers Poultry & Pets - Reynold Loecker Rabbit – Nancy Woeppel

What Is Herdsmanship? This may be old news to many of our 4-H members, but it is important for ALL of us to remember what Herdsmanship is about if you are exhibiting livestock at the County Fair. Herdsmanship is the way that a 4-Her displays his or her animals at the Fair. It refers to how neat and attractive 4-H members keep the livestock barn. It also shows how well you care for your animals. At County Fair, State Fair, AKSARBEN and other events 4-H’ers are judged on Herdsmanship. The overall purpose of this is to: 1. Develop knowledge and skill in proper handling and stabling of livestock. 2. Develop knowledge & skill in proper care and use of equipment. 3. Present to Fair visitors a neat, attractive, and well-kept livestock exhibit. 4. Develop club spirit, pride, and cooperation. Let’s all put forth an extra effort with Herdsmanship this year to present an inviting atmosphere to the public.

Fairground Camping Sites The contact for camping sites at the Knox County Fairgrounds is Debbie Nipp, phone 402- 373-4655.

4-H Round Robin Contest The 6th Annual 4-H Round Robin Showmanship Contest will be held on Sunday, August 14th following the Large Beef Show or approximately 4:00 p.m. 4-H Dress Code is required. The Round Robin Showmanship Contest provides an opportunity for the 4-H Champion and Reserve Champion Senior Division Showman from the large animal species (horse, small beef, sheep, swine, and large beef) to compete for the best all-around senior showman honors at the fair. It is very possible that one of the reserve showman could be named as Champion Round Robin Showman. Complete rules are available on page 17 of the fairbook.

Belt Buckles for Round Robin Contest

Belt buckles will be given to the Champion and Reserve Champion Senior Showman. Thanks to Paul Drobny, Bomgaars for ordering the buckles and the 4-H Council for sponsoring the belt buckles.

will be firmly packed down. After the sand has been packed, no skid loaders will be

allowed in the Harm & Tulleys Event Center.  We appreciate the cooperation of

everyone in this new process.

There will be a pile of wood chips inside the Harm & Tulleys Event Center and

you have them. There may be a limited supply to borrow.

All exhibitors will be responsible for cleaning up their stalls when they leave on

Be resourceful in your use of the wood chips. Pens/stalls do not have to be
