God gives to all mortals life and breath and all things...
so that they would search for God
and perhaps grope for God and find God—
though indeed God is not far from each one of us.
—Acts 17.25, 27
Disregard the patron Saint of Confidence.
Never mind the ones who nod knowingly...
...You were not created to know, not destined
for certainty. You are created to search,
groping in the light, reaching out
through the thicket of your moments,
wondering, wanting more, hungering.
God doesn't want people who are finished,
trophies hanging on the wall. God wants—
wants, like we want, groping, perhaps finding—
hunters who are still seeking, explorers,
children of wonder and blessed unknowing.
In reaching out you expand your world.
In groping you open yourself. In not knowing
you allow God to exceed all bounds.
In searching you stay alive. Let your worship
be the praise of unfinished embraces,
of pauses in conversations. Let unknowing
be your sanctuary. And oh, as you flail,
like an infant not knowing the finger you grasp,
how God, so close, loves the touch of your probing,
and holds your wandering hand.
Unfoldinglight.net—Steve Garnaas-Holmes May 22, ‘14
Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy
and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles
for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,
or the most expressive of
mirth,
or the most tender...
...it is a serious thing
just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.”
from Mary Oliver’s poem
“Invitation”

Toilet Paper Ministry
From the very beginning of the development of the pantry,
toilet paper has been a topic of discussion. When I first stocked the pantry, my husband Ed had con-
cerns about the youth vandalizing Salem’s property with the toilet paper. He agreed to let me try the
toilet paper and paper products. I promised him that the first time any vandalism occurred from toilet
paper or any paper products we would stop putting them in the pantry.
As of this writing there has not been any vandalism from the paper products placed in the pantry.
It appears to be just the opposite. The neighbors take the paper products first before the food. The
neighborhood around Salem is daunting in its scope of poverty and its potential for violence.
Last May, during the final days of school I came upon a group of teenagers sitting on the cement step
in front of the church. It was a weekday morning when I encountered them. I felt their presence and
stares as I was filling the pantry. As I was stocking the Pantry, I felt a breeze and heard the bicycle
going past me on the sidewalk.
At that point, all I could think of was the conversations about the youth that I have been a part of
during church council meetings. I was lost in thought till I heard someone say, “Excuse me.” I turned
around and it was the young man who flew by me on his bike as I was filling the pantry. He said, “I got
your roll of toilet paper before it went out into the street.” I looked down and my bag had tipped over,
and I was missing a roll of toilet paper.
When I finished filling the pantry the teenagers were still sitting on the cement step. The Holy Spirit
took over and I went over to them. I asked them what they would be interested in doing here, and if the
church could help. We talked a little bit, and they explained that they like to go to the park and hang
out. They couldn’t come up with another answer.
I had never thought of toilet paper being a ministry. But at that point that single roll of toilet paper
became a source of connecting with the youth in the neighborhood. For that brief moment you could see
what life must be like for them. I am asking that we keep the youth in our neighborhood in your
thoughts and prayers. We will be a part of the Prayer Walk on August 26, 2017 at 9:45 a.m.; we will be
praying for the students of the Lebanon Middle School and Cleona Elementary school. Please check
future bulletins for more information.

After the worship service on June 25,
the Little Free Library was dedicat-
ed. Tribute was paid to the late Patri-
cia Shedlock by her family, friends,
and members of the congregation for
her insight in bringing the Little Free
Library to Salem and, by doing so,
instilling her love of reading to others,
especially children.

Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. -Matthew 14:29-32
